I have a 32inch tv in living room,my friend said it's far too small for living room.
Is it? What size tv does everyone else have ?

32 inches here.

Redglitter · 13/08/2019 11:49

My TV is 32 as well. I hate big TVs that dominate the room I wouldnt get anything bigger than that.

LakieLady · 13/08/2019 11:53

I personally don't like living spaces to be dominated by tvs.

Same here.

When our old 36" tv died, DP wanted a 50" monster, but I put my foot down. It would have filled the bay window and looked ridiculous. We compromised on a 42", and if it hadn't been for the fact that it was on a great offer and cheaper than a 36" of comparable quality, I would still have insisted on a smaller one. The previous one was a 32" and I thought it was fine.

I still regret it, in a way. I'd prefer it if it was on the wall, but DP hates tv's on walls, for some reason.

SilverySurfer · 13/08/2019 12:02

Mine is 24 inch in a good sized living room. Any bigger and I would have to move into the Buck House ballroom.

LakieLady · 13/08/2019 12:32

*Here is a link to a page that gives the ideal viewing distance range for watching HD on various sized TVs. (The smallest TV they consider talking about is 40", that is really the minimum size for watching HD. Below that you might as well watch standard definition.)

www.crutchfield.com/S-kxeKaeCQvqB/learn/learningcenter/home/TV_placement.html*

They seem to think I should have a 75" tv in my 15' x 12'6" living room! That would be ridiculous, it would obscure half the front window and my beautiful view of the castle and the downs.

I noticed it's a US site, maybe it's true what they say about everything being bigger over there...

bengalcat · 13/08/2019 12:36

No idea but it’s not massive . Does the job and is not the main feature in our living room . Buy what suits you .

AudacityOfHope · 13/08/2019 12:37

Ours is 28. I hate the 'I live in a cinema' look, it's so tacky.

Sooverthemill · 13/08/2019 12:38

We upgraded from 24 to 32 and it took about 6 months to get used to how huge it was. IMO a TV is something that shouldn't dominate ( unless it's in a home cinema room). You do other things in the sitting room too

amusedbush · 13/08/2019 12:47

We're upgrading soon and DH would love a 65" but agrees that it would be too big in our living room. I think we'll be getting a 55 or 58".

We currently have an ancient 42" (I think) so 32 would be too small for us, but it's whatever works for you.

HeronLanyon · 13/08/2019 12:48

I have a lovely 26inch. I really hate large TVs. Always have.

BurningTheToast · 13/08/2019 12:53

OP: I sometimes get embarrassed when new people come over and see how small it is but what can you do

You could invite different people over. Why would you want to be friends with the sort of people who sneer at your tv?

Skyejuly · 13/08/2019 13:04

I hate the tv in a lounge so much we have it in a cabinet which is quite 70s but I love it. I hate tv in lounge.

astressedoutmum1011 · 13/08/2019 13:04

We've got a 49" for downstairs and a 32" in the bedroom but to be honest the tv in our living room is about to kaput and I'll prob just move the 32" downstairs and that'll be fin still x

Singlenotsingle · 13/08/2019 13:05

32" is perfect.

RottnestFerry · 13/08/2019 14:45

The smallest TV they consider talking about is 40", that is really the minimum size for watching HD. Below that you might as well watch standard definition

That might be true for 4K UHD but the difference between standard definition and HD is very noticeable on a 32" TV.

StillANobdie · 13/08/2019 15:19

32" is perfect

Sounds painful to me. Grin

Letthemysterybe · 13/08/2019 15:52

I don’t actually like watching HD on my
In laws big TV. Maybe you adjust to
It, but I just find ‘off’.

Frazzled2207 · 13/08/2019 16:22

I think it's none of your friend's business. Ours is 37 I think, and quite big IMO. Husband wants a bigger one but he never watches it. No justification to swap it until it dies.

TooManyPaws · 13/08/2019 16:28

Ours is 32 and I feel it is fine to look at. though I think it dominates the sitting room too much so it's shoved into a shelving unit. It's only one thing in the room so I don't want it to take over; it's not as though it's the only thing we do in the room.

ScreamingValenta · 13/08/2019 16:36

Even on my 22 inch TV, I can see the difference between HD and non-HD channels.

We only usually watch TV on Friday and Saturday nights, so it would be pointless optimising the room for TV viewing when it isn't what it's mainly used for.

DH and I both grew up in the age of CRT TVs (DH was in his teens before his parents got a colour set!) which had much smaller screens so 22" seems fine to us.

Brainfogmcfogface · 13/08/2019 16:45

32 is fine, I hate big TVs, personally I think they take over the room and look tacky.

Sparadrap · 13/08/2019 16:56

If a friend walked into my house and started criticising it I wouldn’t be inviting her back. What a materialistic cow Angry

crosstalk · 13/08/2019 17:40

You do what you do. With other people saying change friend not TV.
I'm not happy with bedroom TVs but children have other ways to access material. Since I'm renting haven't bothered with TV.

I can understand people who like sport wanting a big screen.

Catquest1 · 13/08/2019 17:48

When we bought our house we spent many months knocking walls down, pulling down ceilings etc and so our furniture stayed in storage. We managed for many many months with a little 5 inch portable telly/radio/cassette thing which only had a black and white picture. Now that was small and we spent many a cold night decorating with it on!

Currently we have a 40 inch tv in the living room and only because some friends emigrated 4 years ago and gave us theirs because digital came in and mine was still a big backed analogue box. Any bigger and it wouldn't fit in its corner!

Catquest1 · 13/08/2019 17:58

I do think the only time people have commented on my tv size was when i split with my ex and he took his tv and i had a 14 inch in the living room. Couldnt actually read the Sky info. Lived like that for a year til my dsis moved in Grin
