I have a 32inch tv in living room,my friend said it's far too small for living room.
Is it? What size tv does everyone else have ?

Its huge. We've a tiny 14 inch in our lounge. No other tv anywhere in the house.

beccarocksbaby · 13/08/2019 07:25

We had a 32in for decades and it was fine! TV isn't the centre of our life and we didn't really feel the need to upgrade. We've recently moved to a much bigger place and upgraded to 40inch and it's massive to me and more than enough. Honestly I always kinda wonder what the point of massive TVs are but then everyone has different priorities and if people enjoy it then great!

genie10 · 13/08/2019 07:29

It depends how far from it you sit and whether you can comfortably see the screen. 32" would be fine in some rooms.

Toomanycats99 · 13/08/2019 07:34

32 inch. In my living room. It's fine. It's a small living room. I don't understand obsession for giant tv's......

whyohwhyflowerdear · 13/08/2019 07:34

I have a 50 inch and wouldn't go any smaller.

Skyejuly · 13/08/2019 07:40

We have 32. I HATE screens dominating lounge!

origamiwarrior · 13/08/2019 07:41

Surprised no one (given this is Mumsnet) has commented on the inverse correlation between TV size and class....

Fairylea · 13/08/2019 07:42

37 here.

Funny isn’t it how that seems very small nowadays and yet when I was growing up and my Mum came home with a 26 it seemed huge and everyone stood round it and went “Wow” Grin

Lindormilk · 13/08/2019 07:42

If you are happy with it, fuck what the friend said.

Since when is a TV a focal point of a home?

MarthaDunstable · 13/08/2019 07:51

Having had small second hand TVs for decades I finally cracked and got a 49 inch tv recently and I love it to death. DH, who only watches documentaries, protested at first, but although I don’t watch a huge amount of telly I do like a few of the big expensive streaming dramas (Thrones, The Crown, Discovery) and settling down to watch them on a good big(ish) screen is such a treat.

However, if it’s a treat you can’t afford for now then so be it - your old one is still going to show the same stuff. It’s like a friend going to Mauritius on holiday when I’m going to Majorca. Yes Mauritius is fabulous, but I can’t afford it so that’s that, and Majorca’s still nice.

We rented our house out when we lived away for a few years. Our tenant had a massive TV which they mounted on the chimney breast. When they removed it, the didn't make good and it looked like someone had been crucified.

Ours is 32 in a smallish room and, as long as I can spot a fleckle on Strictly, it's fine.

MarthaDunstable · 13/08/2019 07:55

The “only chavs have big tellies” thing was a cliche on MN (and elsewhere) for a while, but big/huge screens and Netflix are so ubiquitous now that I think it’s died away.

AtmosClock · 13/08/2019 08:02

Ours is 32 inch, but it seems absolutely fine. We don’t sit 200 yards from it. For those with huge TVs, how far away do you sit? We sit about 2.5 m from our TV and can’t imagine it needs to be any bigger

StarbucksSmarterSister · 13/08/2019 08:06

I must be a weirdo, I have a 22 inch! It's a bit small though, will go for a 26 next time.

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/08/2019 08:15

My tv is only a 22 inch and is just right for us.

Solonelywastheballard · 13/08/2019 08:17

I have 32 inch and it's fine. Dh has just ordered a 50 inch. I feel like it's going to be too big and swamp the room.

PettyContractor · 13/08/2019 08:18

The correct size of TV, assuming what you want to optimise is picture quality for viewing TV, depends on the resolution your are watching (probably HD) and your viewing distance. The Which calculator up-thread gives rather small sizes for HD. But maybe I feel that way because I preferred the maximum from the range that is suitable for HD.

Here is a link to a page that gives the ideal viewing distance range for watching HD on various sized TVs. (The smallest TV they consider talking about is 40", that is really the minimum size for watching HD. Below that you might as well watch standard definition.)

StarbucksSmarterSister · 13/08/2019 08:18

75 atm but got a 82 coming tomorrow

I had NO idea you could get them that big!

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 13/08/2019 08:22

Mine's a 32" I think. I bought it in 2001 (it was very expensive at the time). It's not flat screen and not HD.

I keep getting badgered to buy a new one. But ....why? The picture quality is excellent. I can watch all my shows. Is there something that I'm missing?

Scardanelli · 13/08/2019 08:26

I sometimes get embarrassed when new people come over and see how small it is but what can you do

You could be careful about whom you invite over?

I was going to say I can't believe people judge one another on the size of their telly - but then realised that I would in fact judge someone for having a big telly. Confused

FWIW, I haven't got one at all.

00100001 · 13/08/2019 08:29

Maybe your friend can buy you a bigger one if it means that much to her?

We have one 32" TV in lounge, fits nicely into recess. DS16 wants a bigger wall mounted one Confused but I've said he can buy himself a huge one and put it in the wall when he moves into his first house/flat Grin

PettyContractor · 13/08/2019 08:34

I personally don't like living spaces to be dominated by tvs

I don't see the point of optimising a room for drinking tea, playing scrabble and reading actual paper newspapers, if 99% of the human-hours spent in that room are going to be spent watching TV. It's not a living room, it's a TV room that's very very occasionally used for something else. I actually rearrange the furniture (including rotating the sofa 90 degrees) for entertaining visitors, the normal layout is for watching TV.

Blobby10 · 13/08/2019 08:34

i have a 46" and its too big for my living room. Only reason I have it is because exH chose it way before we split up and it hasn't broken so no reason to replace it. If it does accidentally come in contact with a broom handle or childs toy (all my children are uni age Grin) it will be replaced with nothing bigger than a 36" (ish) smart TV Smile. Was looking at TVs in Currys the other day and couldn't believe the size of some of them!!

PooWillyBumBum · 13/08/2019 08:36

We have 32inch because our life doesn’t revolve around TVs. I think huge TVs in a main reception room are tacky.

Oh, and your friend is rude.

W0rriedMum · 13/08/2019 08:38

We've the same, by choice. It means our living room is not dominated by a TV we rarely even watch. It works for us.
