Old Man Pants

Spanielmadness · 06/08/2019 15:38

Lighthearted - of course my DP can wear what he wishes and I would never tell him what he can or can’t wear...........

My DP and I have a debate - I think the slips he wears and declares so comfortable are ‘old man pants’. He disagrees and feels that any young man would be pleased to wear such a comfortable pant.

So please, wise ones of mumsnet - AIBU to declare these ‘old man pants’?

Ugh, even my 71 year old Dad wouldn’t wear those! 😱

SaraNade · 07/08/2019 03:49

Not sure how they're 'old man pants'. I was expecting to see a pair of old stretched out white y-fronts. Those briefs in your picture are far more modern. Shrugs. Many men in their 30s and 40s wear them, they're not what I would consider old man pants. Not by a long shot.

StarlightLady · 07/08/2019 04:26

A splash of colour might help! Most mens’ underwear is pretty awful to be honest.

CallingDrJones · 07/08/2019 04:29

My dad wears these, he's not yet 60!! They're called 'knickers' in our house too!

Man pants (whatever the style) look so thick and uncomfortable too.

QRCode · 07/08/2019 06:35

My dad wears them, he is 74.

ladymariner · 07/08/2019 06:37

This thread has really made me laugh, especially Quantock's dad's comment...Excellent! Grin

Fwiw, dh wears black boxers and ds wears coloured trunks, really helpful as that way I know whose are whose when they come out of the laundry.

autumnboys · 07/08/2019 06:41

My husband (late forties) has worn these for as long as I’ve know him, about 25 years. I have taught myself not to look at them, much as I imagine he has taught himself not to look at my comfortable but less than hot knickers.

BikeRunSki · 07/08/2019 07:18

The only males, whose laundry I have encountered, who wear those are either under 5 or over 70.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 07/08/2019 10:07

Have had the privilege of seeing DF's meat and two veg in his final yearsConfused I can concur with Quantock's DF's explanation.

Trafalger · 07/08/2019 10:36

They are known in this house as "vasectomy pants" as this is the only time he has worn them for the support. They were binned as soon as he was ok.

woodhill · 07/08/2019 10:58

Yes definitely worn after the V procedure - deep blue duster quality pair

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 07/08/2019 11:00

My DH wore those until he hit 45 and then suddenly switched to a snug short style. So for me they’re young man pants 🤭

My OH wears the trunk type boxer short things - I like him wearing those as, when it's hot and sweaty weather, I can borrow them to go under skirts and avoid chub-rub Grin. NB Have only done this once but was so comfy I will def do it again!!!

I always thought those knicker style pants were for toddlers and young boys before they graduated to boxer shorts!

itbemay1 · 07/08/2019 11:31

At least he is wearing underwear my DH doesn't own any... always commando Confused

WooMaWang · 07/08/2019 11:46

I refused to buy those awful knicker type pants for either of my sons even for toilet training. Cotton trunks all the way in the house.

My BF wears rather nice Calvin Klein trunks, and will consider no other pants.

My ex wore horrible baggy boxers (the really cheap ones from M&S), which cannot have offered any kind of support. Actually when I first met him, he had several pairs where the elastic had completely gone in the waist and his belt was keeping up both his jeans and pants. Stupidly I actually took him to M&S to buy new pants. Instead I should have recognised a man child who couldn’t manage to replace his own pants and run in the other direction. He’ll probably let keep his current collection of pants until some other stupid woman takes over buying pants for him, even if they are totally falling apart.

Which is to say, a man who takes responsibility for his own underwear (however old mannish) is far sexier than one who requires a woman to sort out his pants.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 07/08/2019 15:09

I prefer briefs on a man to boxers, but these are a bit... utilitarian. Very three for £5. Have you considered buying from some better brands as a gift (Sloggi, Aussiebum, HOM etc.)?

DejaVoodoo · 07/08/2019 15:32

This thread is so funny! I initially thought no, of course those are not old man pants, my still youthful DH(55) has been wearing them for as long as I’ve known him (30 years)! But I have noted the comments on here, and see I am wrong.

To me, big, teabag Y fronts are old man pants, but perhaps they’re not even manufactured anymore?

SaraNade · 07/08/2019 16:26

Really, they are simply the male version of women's bikini briefs. That's all. I don't get the fuss. Not long ago, they were marketed as the hip and more modern alternative to y-fronts. They're just men's briefs. That's all. I'd rather briefs than those god-awful ugly old man trunks.

bumblingbovine49 · 07/08/2019 22:04

Well according to this ' briefs' are the best ones ShockGrin

Justgivemesomepeace · 07/08/2019 22:11

Those are toddler/little boy underpants to me. Old man pants are my 77 yr old dads tartan, baggy, boxer type things. Thankfully DP wears neither of those.

Frogshoe · 07/08/2019 22:22

My DH wears these but I can't complain as he says nothing about the huge pants I wear post CS Grin

FactoryEmblem · 07/08/2019 22:32

Is anyone else singing 'Old Man Pants' to the tune of Postman Pat?
