To ask leavers if they would vote differently now it's looking like no deal?

And as such should we go for another referendum?

I voted to remain and would continue to do so even if a deal was possible. However it is apparent that a deal isn't going to happen. Was it ever really going to be possible?

Would that change the mind of leavers? Or even remainers?

I would prefer to see no deal (even though I know its shit) than for this car crash to continue in slow motion any further.

I voted remain but would vote leave. I know that I’ll get jumped on and accused of all sorts but I don’t care. I would. I’m certain that when we leave others will follow. I worked with a guy who came over from Belgium to do some work and he said a lot of them would love to leave and it’s growing all over Europe.

AskMeAboutBoswell · 02/08/2019 07:43

I want no deal. People are talking about their own country making them ashamed etc, but I honestly think we will be seen as the brave ones who bring down a bloated monolithic union who has been sucking the life out of Europe.

We can help other nations without freedom of movement and a matching currency. Europe doesn't need to be a homogeneous place, people need their own tribes.

ittakes2 · 02/08/2019 07:48

I would vote leave. England once left the commonwealth trading agreement to join the EU trading agreement - the commonwealth countries involved found new trading partners. I think the first referedum was a bit ridiculous as there should have been more time for people to understand such a complex issue - but you can't have another referedum because you don't like the result of the first one.

MiddleForDiddle · 02/08/2019 07:52

I voted remain, DH voted leave.
Mine was not a particularly considered vote tbh.

After seeing the chaos of the last 3 years I would vote leave if there was another vote, even if that meant a no deal.

Let the country lance the boil and then we can start to heal.

ThirdThoughts · 02/08/2019 07:55

I would stick with remain.

I think I understand the tension fatigue that is causing you to pick no deal rather than an extension of this limbo.

However, "no deal" is not a permanent position, a future trading relationship would still need to be agreed and the deal on offer then is unlikely to be an improvement on the one on offer now but we'd have a lot more immediate disruption with no transition period.

Doobigetta · 02/08/2019 08:01

There’s no point in asking this, it’s basically “are you ready to say we were right yet?” over and over again. And nobody’s going to admit that. If people have changed their minds they’ll keep quiet, and if they haven’t they’ll come out fighting. What’s the point?

ginghambox · 02/08/2019 08:03

Here we go again
Leave.

AskMeAboutBoswell · 02/08/2019 08:05

Doobi, funny how when the economy has a bounce we are told it's nothing to do with brexit as 'we haven't left yet' but anything bad is instantly blamed on brexit.

Trafalger · 02/08/2019 08:07

I really wish remainers would stop asking for another referendum (by the way I voted remain). Its not going to happen. And what if there was another one and it came out as leave again? Keep going until you get the answer you want? The country spoke (well some of them but that's a different argument) and we have to stick by that. Now we have to make the best of the situation be it no deal or a deal. No amount of internet posts are going to change the result of this.

MarieG10 · 02/08/2019 08:09

I would defiantly vote leave now. Was originally a remainder but am appalled at how the politicians have behaved and refused to carry out a democratic vote. Almost starting to feel like a kangaroo state

NCforthis2019 · 02/08/2019 08:09

almost everyone I know would vote leave. Europe are a bunch of bullies. And no - they’re not racist.

itsasausage · 02/08/2019 08:12

yes- I voted to leave and still would.

tequilasunrises · 02/08/2019 08:14

I would rather a deal but think we should leave on the 31st regardless.

It’s the uncertainty that I can’t stand. Once we are out and we know what the issues are we can start to address and rebuild as a nation and hopefully tackle some of our own issues at the same time. The longer it all drags on the more in limbo everyone is.

I voted to remain but only because I think freedom of goods and movement outweighes the negatives of belonging to the EU. I don’t think the EU itself is all that.

MrPan · 02/08/2019 08:14

Fuck me, it really is clear that leavers can't put a coherent argument together, but yet expected to be 'respected'. Not going to happen, with racism rising, the pound plummeting (as planned by brexiters) for the benefit of the really rich investors and causing increased prices, £4bn being spent on the very things labelled as project fear, no FoM, the break up of the U.K. - leavers really are v rich, or as thick as mince. Or both.

MrPan · 02/08/2019 08:16

people need their own tribes

possibly the stupidest thing I've read on MN in all the years.

Venger · 02/08/2019 08:24

you can't have another referedum because you don't like the result of the first one.

But you can if the original one was built on a campaign of misinformation.

AskMeAboutBoswell · 02/08/2019 08:25

Mrpan, try telling that that to people who follow a religion, or anyone who has a strong cultural background, are you saying they should give up thief history to be part of a global unit??
Humans aren't like that. People like having a community.

AskMeAboutBoswell · 02/08/2019 08:25

*their

MrPan · 02/08/2019 08:35

yes, you are ridiculously missing a point and your POV opens up a really nasty scenario that invites fascism. I follow a religion, but that didn't occur to you, like many things.
We have lots of communities - the most productive economic one we have is the European one.

You wish to revert us back to very dark periods. MN guidelines prevent further comment.

annikin · 02/08/2019 08:37

Still leave. And yes, in general elections you have another vote 3 years or so later if you want to change your mind. But that's after the people you voted for have actually been in power for 3 years. 'Leave' still hasn't actually happened, thanks to arrogant MP's who flatly refuse to do what the people voted for. Unbelievable in a supposedly democratic country. So we still don't know for sure if it would be for the best (same as the remainers don't know for sure that that would be for the best), but I still believe it would be.

AlexaShutUp · 02/08/2019 08:39

I can't understand the people who want no deal because they don't want this to drag on any longer. Presumably, they realise that it will drag on for years regardless, as we desperately try to negotiate some trade deals to get us out of the quagmire? Or do they think we'll just be able to draw a line under this whole issue on November 1 and get on with other stuff as if nothing had ever happened? The mind boggles.

I used to think that a second referendum was the only way forward. If we had one, of course I'd still vote remain. However, I'm no longer convinced that a second referendum is the right course, because I just don't think that the electorate is actually intelligent enough (on average) to understand and engage with the issues. The many, many champions of no deal have really laid this bare, and have made me understand that Brexit is not about rational decision-making and doing what's best for the country in the longer term, it's about emotion, identity and tribalism. No campaign will sway people away from their pro-Brexit position because they have their fingers in their ears and don't want to listen. And if we leave with no deal and it's a catastrophe, they still will not reflect on their choices and see that they got it wrong, the negative fallout will merely be blamed on the remainers and/or the Europeans who have somehow fucked up the whole grand project for them. It's a lost cause.

I think the best we can hope for now is a managed exit with a negotiated deal.

CorbynsComrade · 02/08/2019 08:41

@MrPan People like you are why Brexit is happening, so please keep on facilitating it. Hilarious that you accuse the rich of voting for Brexit when the vast majority are working class northerns. Plus you have then likes of Campbell and Branson champion you’re side. Grin I voted remain, if I’m made to vote again I’ll vote leave.

MrPan · 02/08/2019 08:41

So anniken - how will leaving, esp on a no deal be for the best? Please explain, with actual grown up facts.

TeacupDrama · 02/08/2019 08:42

I know quite a few people who voted remain who would now vote leave, possibly because they were on borderline of leave / remain and thought it was about 50/50 what was best also some like DH would now vote leave as they think the vote should be enacted, even if legally the referendum was advisory both sides stated categorically that the result would be acted on, I do not think any MP said before referendum that they wouldn't support public choice and would vote remain / leave in parliament regardless of public vote

even in Brecon the conservative and Brexit party got more than lib Dems even with greens and plaid not standing, although that is not how first past the post voting works, but it certainly is not evidence of a swing towards remain
The question is if there was a second referendum and leave won would it then be acted on or not? All polls still show less than 4% difference so it really doesn't appear to me that there has been a fundamental change in public opinion

CorbynsComrade · 02/08/2019 08:42

And yes, I’ve noticed my grammatical error before anyone accuses me of being thick.
