Corbyn is too stuck to his principles which you wouldn't normally consider a problem what being eurosceptic all his life until after being elected labour leader what a principled person

Outsomnia · 26/07/2019 17:52

The Brexit Party have no MPs. So do you all think they will clean up under FPTP or what, and just support the Tories?

It is much more complicated than that. I think Johnson will offer sweeteners to Farage like a peerage or something in return for not running in Tory constituencies or something like that.

Politics is a dastardly game isn't it?

Cinammoncake · 26/07/2019 17:59

I think it'd be another hung parliament. Tories would do a deal with the Brexit party possibly, because Brexit party don't have enough/any MPs, and all the talent like Ann Widdecombe Hmm etc are at the EU.

That would mean potential defections from the Tories and there would be lots more MPs standing as independents.

Tories will get a lot of votes but the DUP will get fewer, so won't be able to prop up the Tories.

Scottish conservatives would be nearly wiped out by the SNP

Libdems will do very well, and overtake Labour. Greens will also do well.

So I think it'd end in another hung parliament, not that dissimilar to now.

Cinammoncake · 26/07/2019 18:00

Unless there's a big change like Corbyn leaves and someone good heads up Labour, in which case I think Labour would be in with a chance of winning.

Limensoda · 26/07/2019 18:01

Probably yes because stupidity seems to have become an epidemic in this country.

TwoPupsandaHamster · 26/07/2019 18:02

Yes. I think you're right. I won't be voting for any of them. At a push I'll vote for the green Party, maybe. Why doesn't Corbyn just quit! If he does who do you think will take over as Leader of the Opposition?

Snoozanna · 26/07/2019 18:03

I loathe Boris and would prefer Corbyn over him (I don't like Corbyn either).

But he would win.

Cinammoncake · 26/07/2019 18:06

Twopups I'd hope for Kier Starmer or Yvette Cooper, I think they'd do well.

ForalltheSaints · 26/07/2019 18:06

The Brexit party would gain a large vote, except in seats such as IDSs or Jacob Rees-Mogg's. Lib Dems would do well, especially in London.

So with four parties in England potentially each getting over 20%, who knows what would happen. Then there is the electoral issues in Scotland and Wales with their respective nationalist parties.

Though the DUP would probably keep their 9 or 10 seats.

GCAcademic · 26/07/2019 18:11

Voter suppression is how Trump got in. His team knew there were large swathes of people who would never vote forhim – so they threw their effort into dissuading those people from voting at all.

I don’t think these are analogous situations. To be fair to the Tories (who I despise, btw), on the GRA / woman issue, they don’t need to, nor have they tried to, dissuade people from voting for Labour / Lib Dems / Greens. Individuals connected with those parties, as well as WEP, have managed it very well all by themselves through their behaviour on social media, in party meetings, in unions, and in local government and Parliament. If voter turnout is suppressed, it’s those so-called “progressive” parties who are to blame, with the words that have come out of their own mouths.

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 26/07/2019 18:13

I'm always sad to read that Labour supporters won't vote Labour because of JC. The Tory government have done and will continue to do horrendous and heartbreaking damage to this country and many of it's most vulnerable people, anyone who opposes them needs to get out and vote at the next opportunity, whether or not they feel politically homeless (like many of us Sad), whether or not they approve of JC, whether or not it's a party they would usually support. JC has many flaws but in my view anything is better than the current bag of shit government.

megletthesecond · 26/07/2019 18:14

Yes, he would win because labour are incapable of getting their shit together. Corbyn is bloody useless.

Outsomnia · 26/07/2019 18:14

If Corbyn decided to go, I have no doubt that the Tories would lose the next election hands down. People want a political home that is middle ground now, and there is nothing for them under FPTP.

Why comrade Corbyn is still there when he is so toxic to many people is beyond my comprehension.

But maybe Labour do not want to be in power Or in opposition. It's all a bit mad to me.

TwoPupsandaHamster · 26/07/2019 18:15

TwopupsI'd hope for Kier Starmer or Yvette Cooper, I think they'd do well

I'm not sure they would do well tbh. Probably too left.....? UK politics is anything but a straighforward vote for Labour or Tory or Lib Dems at the moment. What a bloody shitstorm we are living under.

Alsohuman · 26/07/2019 18:15

Boris wouldn’t win. Farage’s ego is far too big to cut a deal with the Tories so the leave vote would be split. Any remainer with half a brain would vote LibDem or Green and Jo Swinson and Caroline Lucas are sensible pragmatists who would agree not to split the vote. As long as there’s a possibility of not leaving the EU any other issue is a sideline as far as I’m concerned. I’m perfectly willing to hold my nose and vote LibDem for once.

catgirl1976 · 26/07/2019 18:23

In all honesty I probably would have voted LibDem despite the woman issue on the grounds that, as a PP said, Brexit is more pressing and we can (hopefully) sort out women's rights a little later.

But Jo Swinson's voting record is so, so awful that I really don't think I now can with her as leader.

I have never not voted. (Usually Labour, sometimes Lib Dem). I would like to be able to vote Labour again but will not vote for Corbyn. If he resigned and they got a different leader then.........but I just don't think he will.

catgirl1976 · 26/07/2019 18:25

Oh, and I think BoJo will make Farage ambassador to the USA.

wijjjy · 26/07/2019 18:28

Lot's of people thought the same about Theresa May. That didn't turn out as expected.

Cinammoncake · 26/07/2019 18:28

catgirl would you consider voting green?

Oh, and I think BoJo will make Farage ambassador to the USA.
The horror. Quite possible.

Outsomnia · 26/07/2019 18:28

FPTP system is just so unrepresentative isn't it?

Nothing we can do about it now, but I marvel at how other countries with Single Transferable Vote manage to actually enjoy their elections, and anyone can be elected if they reach the quota.

Westminster elections are so fkn boring. All over in a few minutes.

Alsohuman · 26/07/2019 18:29

Sadly @catgirl1976, I think you might be right, it would be a great way of getting rid of him. I join you in shuddering and add some more at the (likely) prospect of Widdecombe succeeding him as Brexit party leader.

ChocChocButtons · 26/07/2019 18:30

I don’t dislike Boris I think he’s actually a pretty articulate man when he gave his speech I am a right wing leaver tho so my opinion I’m sure will be shouted down.

Also if he lost an election we would have corbyn lol is that really what you want?

Alsohuman · 26/07/2019 18:32

We’re not a two party electorate any more @ChocChocButtons. I doubt there will be anything other than hung parliaments for a long time now.

clearblueskye · 26/07/2019 18:34

I think Boris is a pretty awful person so I only support him because the alternative is Corbyn. I wish Labour would become more credible.

When the outgoing Conservative Prime Minister feels the same you know there's a problem. If Corbyn was as principled as he pretends to be he would resign. He's 70 and could just choose to retire.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 26/07/2019 18:35

Yes, he would win because labour are incapable of getting their shit together. Corbyn is bloody useless

I just don’t know. I actually think if Labour keeps Corbyn (or is unable to get rid of him) the Lib Dem’s could overtake Labour. They might have enough seats (Lib, Lab & SNP) for a majority.

If a sane Remainer takes over I think Labour will win.

I’m really scared the Tories could win though. Johnson scares me.
