I don’t want him to but what is the alternative!?

Anyone against Conservative and brexit should get behind the lib dems imo

With Jo Swinson's voting record? No thanks...

Peregrina · 28/07/2019 17:09

Don't they say that the additional votes for the Tories have come at the expense of the Brexit Party?

Alsohuman · 28/07/2019 17:13

There was bound to be a Boris bounce. It’s way to soon for the polls to mean anything. There’s only a certain number of leave votes to go round so any Tory gains are going to come mainly from the Brexit Party.

Jo Swinson’s voting record should be the least of anyone’s worries right now with Boris driving us over a cliff.

everythingisginandroses · 28/07/2019 17:14

Labour is the only party with enough of an electoral base to take out the Conservatives. If increased VAT and tuition fees, benefit cuts and more academies were my sort of thing, I'd just vote Tory instead of wasting my time with the Lib Dems www.theyworkforyou.com/mp/11971/jo_swinson/east_dunbartonshire/votes#welfare

JustAnotherPoster00 · 28/07/2019 17:16

6% I think, there was a 10% bounce when TM came in

borisisbonkers · 28/07/2019 17:20

the pro-brexit coalition has an easier unification job - we all know the tories and Brexit party will unite after an election to push Brexit through.

We need Lib Dem/change/and other remain MPs to break party ranks to unite for a remain ticket - that's a harder proposition and Corbyn is at the heart of this problem because he is pro-brexit. He's being held to ransom by the 25 or so pro-brexit labour MPs that are his cronies.

On Jo Swinson's voting record - doesn't it mostly reflect the party whip? You don't have any context on these votes, often it's because they preferred a better proposal. I'm voting Lib Dem unless labour kicks out Corbyn and his crew and drops the 'we'll get a better deal' rubbish.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 28/07/2019 17:26

Vote Lib Dem and you're going to get Tory, I dont mean that in a trope sense but Swinson has already said she wont work with Corbyn, there is a 0% chance that the membership will vote to get rid of him and that only leaves him resigning which he isnt going to do, so the anti-brexit as long as we dont have to work with the Labour party to stop it) LIb Dems will go into coalition with the tories with some bollocks about making sure that they keep the tories in check Hmm

borisisbonkers · 28/07/2019 17:28

rubbish JustAnotherPoster00 the Lib Dems are anti Brexit - they're not going to go into a coalition to push through Brexit. Utter nonsense.

The labour MPs that back remain need to ally with the Lib Dems in a remain coalition.

borisisbonkers · 28/07/2019 17:29

you'll see the implosion of Corbyn after another election because we'll get remain supporting labour MPs leaving labour to go into coalition with the Lib Dems.

More likely than a tory Lib Dem coalition.

everythingisginandroses · 28/07/2019 17:30

Sounds about right to me, JustAnotherPoster. I'd sooner sleep with a boa constrictor than trust the Lib Dems.

Cinammoncake · 28/07/2019 17:33

LibDems are getting a lot of trashing from the Labour bots who are running scared. I think the voting record is a red herring because we don't know what the whip was and what LibDem position in the coalition is.
All I can say myself is while I'm sure Jo Swinson isn't perfect, when I hear her talking, she's closer to what I think than Corbyn or Johnson, and she wants to stop Brexit and seems normal, so I'll go with that. If I was in Scotland I'd vote SNP as I like Nicola Sturgeon.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 28/07/2019 17:36

After a GE I think theres less chance of that happening tbh, especially if there is a lot of new intake MP's theyre more likely want to keep the mandate their voters have given them, with 'lets build a statue for thatcher Swinsons voting record she will happily go into co-alition with the Tories I guarantee the price will be a PV on the brexit deal where Labour are already campaigning for a PV on any deal once its been through the HOP and they are campaigning for remain against a tory deal

borisisbonkers · 28/07/2019 17:37

yes I agree on the voting record cinammoncake there's always relevant context. The Lib Dems have consistently supported remain.

I'd vote SNP IF they signed a formal stop Brexit coalition with clear priority given to an immediate second referendum before the election, but otherwise I'd not trust them not to push for an independence referendum in tandem or beforehand, at the end of the day they want out of Britain and their hatred of Brexit is secondary.

CasperGutman · 28/07/2019 17:39

I would vote for my current Labour MP, because she is an excellent parliamentary representative, hard-working and principled. Radical idea - maybe looking at the actual candidates as well as the parties could help others decide whom to support?

borisisbonkers · 28/07/2019 17:40

justanotherposter00 you think labour are going to win more MPs with their completely unclear Brexit position? Hahhahaha, there is no evidence for that in any poll at all!

Cinammoncake · 28/07/2019 17:42

I've googled the Swinson thing about her supporting having a statue for Thatcher. It seems like Swinson didn't support her policies or agree with her, it was about recognising her achievements as first woman PM. Interesting that people want to smear her as a tory for this.

Twillow · 28/07/2019 17:43

Rubbish. I don't understand the vilification of Corbyn at all, and a lot of that by his own party. You think they'd be standing together as a united party in the face of such dire opposition, but no they're busy shooting themselves in the feet. Die hard Labout voter who would prefer to vote Labour but will quite happilly vote for the most viable opposition to the Tories.

Have you seen Priti Patel talking about bringing back capital punishment - she said on question time in response to Ian Hislop quoting some facts of miscarriages of justice that, if those people had been executed then 'the deaths of innocent people would be a deterrent'. ARGHHHH.

Cinammoncake · 28/07/2019 17:44

Fair point caspergutman although if I had a Tory MP who I liked, I still wouldn't vote for them right now.

Cinammoncake · 28/07/2019 17:45

twillow that's horrific about Priti Patel's views, I don't think she's the right person for that role or any

JustAnotherPoster00 · 28/07/2019 17:48

Nope she's a Tory because of how she voted consistently along the Conservative party line

borisisbonkers · 28/07/2019 17:49

yes Swinson's support for the statue to Thatcher was obvious that she's the first female prime minister. If we start saying that because Thatcher isn't our sort of woman, she's therefore disqualified you are running the risk of being misogynistic and holding female politicians to some sort of higher standard than male ones. Should we go about tearing down statues of men as we didn't like their politics? How would we decide that? That's what the women voting for Trump said, that Hilary Clinton wasn't their sort of woman and we're in that territory to my mind.

First female PM is the first female PM. Or maybe we should just go about tearing down statues of men that we define don't meet modern criteria?

Cinammoncake · 28/07/2019 17:50

I think to add to that accolade justanotherposter he's the worst opposition leader in history, isn't he? Even if it is all a big fat conspiracy against him, what's he doing about it? Unless he can turn that around in ultra swift time, then he should resign and give someone else a go, for the good of the country.

Dongdingdong · 28/07/2019 17:52

I have no problem at all with her support of a Mrs Thatcher statue. It's her voting on welfare and benefits that I take issue with.

Jobchange1265 · 28/07/2019 17:52

I think Johnson is seen as a fairly likeable chap to many people and would win an election easily, particularly if against Corbyn. Until labour move more towards the centre and rid themselves of the likes of Len McCluskey then they won’t win
