Yes i like yvette cooper

In his own way, he is as power-thirsty as Boris Johnson is.

Heaven for fend the Labour Party should actually have someone in charge that wants to be Prime Minister! If Corbynites spent less time slagging off Labour's most successful Prime Minister, less time trying to find dirt on anyone in the Labour Party who doesn't approve of the Corbyn hard left takeover and less time abusing the Lib Dems, they may actually be able to do their job of holding the government to account.

I'd love to have Yvette Cooper as Leader, but, whenever I say so, Corbynites refer to her unsuccessful attempt to stand as a candidate in 2015. Everyone (normal) respects her but I'm not sure she's ruthless enough to beat off the competition. Hilary Benn said he didn't want to be PM.

Weak stance - yes. After Johnson's taunts in the Commons about finally being a Remainer, Corbyn was already rowing back at the rally outside later. He's still fudging about whether they'd need to take it to the people if it were a Labour Brexit. Only for No Deal or a bad deal. And, of course, a Corbyn deal wouldn't be a bad deal. Same line as May's.

I personally like Jeremy Corbyn, however I do think that a more 'popular' leader would be better placed to win a GE and get the Tories out.

The most important issue as I can see it, for myself and for many others suffering under their diabolically cruel policies, is getting the Tories out. So if that's bye bye Jeremy so be it I guess.

In reply to the question - yes he could be doing worse - he could be implementing policies like UC and it's built in 5 week wait and the ensuing forcing people into debt. Also it's policy of spending hundreds of thousands of taxpayers money defending a flaw in the assessment period of UC which means that many mothers and disabled people lose out on their work allowances (new version of working tax credit) just because of the date their employers pay them, which has been ruled unlawful already but they are still trying to defend it. Along with the many other flaws. He could be implementing the long ongoing freeze on out of work and in work benefits in which prices rise and rise and people's (yes also Childrens!!) money stays frozen.

It's not Labour, or any of the other parties (except Lib Dems who helped them get this unholy mess through) , or Jeremy himself , doing all this !!

I think he could be a better opposition yes, but people should be focussing more on the actual architects of all this poverty.

I can see your point littlemissmuffins but agree with what pp have said that 'negative campaigning' can only go so far. You have to be able to trust that he would do better. For there to be money to distribute the economy has to be doing well. Also, I'd want someone who could be a leader on the world stage, which I feel Bojo and Corbyn both cannot do. I think Jo Swinson could do quite well like a Jacinda Adern. The thing is, Labour need to be more proactive, not just moaning about Tories and LibDems but offering an attractive alternative of their own.

I agree with that Cinnamoncake , except that when there is money which could be distributed, the Tories use it to give tax breaks to the already comfortably and well off, or on expensive high court appeals to try and defend their unlawful attacks on the disabled and the working poor. Instead of doing anything to address the massive inequality, the poor just get poorer under them.
I am also dismayed that Labour have not come up with a concrete plan for what exactly they would do with the mess that is UC. One minute they say they'd scrap it and the next they say they'd consider options. One thing I do know for certain though is that Labour would not be setting about demolishing the welfare safety net the way the Tories are - I'd trust that much!!

littlemissmuffins · 26/07/2019 15:19

It may seem as if I am only focussing on one issue /area of policy. However for myself and almost everyone I know - for the poor - austerity IS our biggest concern. Before brexit even. It's the difference between heating our homes and not, being able to pay our high rents which need topped up if we are on minimum wage or not, between our Children being able to attend that afterschool activity most of their friends are attending or not.

Cinammoncake · 26/07/2019 15:33

I completely agree with you littlemissmuffins and want something done about poverty, child poverty and disability benefits as a matter of urgency. I think there's so much call for this in the country. The economy needs to be handled well enough for this to happen and I think we just need someone competent enough seeming, and who can focus on and prioritise these issues and the environment, as well as education and the nhs.

Labour just needs to spell out a clear plan and have someone electable to do it. One of the reasons I don't like the railway plan is it seems like a waste of money and I think Labour should focus on poverty first and foremost, which is a national emergency imo.

I can see they want to tackle inequality which is good. But the hate rich people/class war type vibe will just put people off, and there's a real risk a lot of wealth could leave the country. Anyway, JC can't seem to run the Labour Party so I think he couldn't run the country. I think Starmer, Cooper etc would be more trusted on this. JC seems like he wants to bring the UK back to the bad old days of the 70s
