To dislike when strangers ask me the age gap of my children?

Elmo311 · 16/07/2019 16:30

I know this is probably irrational, but I have a small gap between kids.
I was in the post office today and the que was massive, as I was leaving this random woman asked me really loudly what my kids age gap is, I told her "it's not a very big one!" And left.
Why are people so nosey ?!

I think I'm annoyed because it was in the most quiet place, and I can imagine everyone's ears were tuned in!

Why to people need to know / ask, when they don't even know me? Especially in a post office FGS...

Rant over!

Touchy. It's making conversation. Get over yourself.

Crunchymum · 16/07/2019 16:33

I think you may be overreacting a little bit?

SayNoToCarrots · 16/07/2019 16:35

Would sistema storage solutions help?

Elmo311 · 16/07/2019 16:36

Haha , thank you all! I can always rely on MN to tell me to get a grip!

You're being a bit sensitive about it. Understandable if one or both were a surprise or if you feel like others are judging along those lines but really people don't care, its curiosity and making conversation.

Although you are definitely being unreasonable by not putting the age gap. We all want to know now

Elmo311 · 16/07/2019 16:38

Well because you're all so lovely.... there's 10.5 months between them!

I guess I wouldn't have minded as much had it just been me and her.

PristineCondition · 16/07/2019 16:40

You get it the other way too. My gap is 8years (16 and 8)and my boyfriend constantly gets asked it the eldest is his stepson (he not)
He likes to say the youngest isn't his and
Watch their brains whirl

Elmo311 · 16/07/2019 16:42

@PristineCondition ha! I wonder if I can do something similar!

Cannyhandleit · 16/07/2019 16:42

There are 19m between my boys and I get asked all the time if they are twins, once while number 1 was walking and number 2 was being carried in his car seat 😂! Doesn't bother me at all!

breakfastpizza · 16/07/2019 16:42

I always give jokey, non-answers when I think it's none of their business. Your response was perfect.

SleepingStandingUp · 16/07/2019 16:42

Op I'm on your side.

Oh aren't thry lovely
Yes thanks
They in school yet?
This one is, not quite for this one

Oh thry look quite close in age, there can't be much of a gap
No, 10.5 months
Gosh I bet thst was a surprise!

That's a conversation Inn which it's nosy but fairly OK to ask a stranger how soon after birth she had unprotected sex

Walking up to someone and blurting out "how big a gap is there between them" is just rude.

DS has a obvious disability. People walk up randomly and with no preamble ask what's wrong with him. If you're that interested, both to make some polite chit chat. Otherwise put your nosey nose awaay

SleepingStandingUp · 16/07/2019 16:43

Sorry for typos

Barbarafromblackpool · 16/07/2019 16:44

Wasn't making conversation if she that's all she asked. I've been asked this a fair few times and I'm not overly bothered about it, but it is a bit rude.

Waveysnail · 16/07/2019 16:44

I get asked if my younger ones are twins as they are practically same height and look very similar- there are two years between them. People remark on the unusual and its unusual to have such a small gap. It's not an big deal

StCharlotte · 16/07/2019 16:50

You get it the other way too. My gap is 8years (16 and 8)and my boyfriend constantly gets asked it the eldest is his stepson (he not) He likes to say the youngest isn't his and Watch their brains whirl

Is the youngest not his then?

Elmo311 · 16/07/2019 16:52

I know it's unusual to have a small gap, but she could've asked me in a nicer way like someone else has suggested, and not in front of everyone.
It would've lead to more questions and I didn't fancy a conversation! Just wanted to get back home in time before one of them screams Grin

I had three under three so had remarks all of the time. I understand how annoying it gets when it’s incessant and almost daily but they honestly mean no harm.

Pipandmum · 16/07/2019 16:54

I got constantly asked why my three year old son wasn’t in school (he was very tall for his age). Drove me nuts. People are just nosey.

doodlejump1980 · 16/07/2019 16:54

When folk ask me what the age gap is with my two they always get a shock when I say 2 mins. I have one slightly taller twin than the other. 😬

Minai · 16/07/2019 16:54

I get this too and I might be over sensitive but I don’t like it either. It’s usually accompanied by a shudder, a gasp of horror or a ‘rather you than me’ on the odd occasion I’ve even been asked if ds2 was planned. I have 18m between my 2 (and they were both planned not that it’s anyones business!) I find the gap hard work as the little one is only 7 months so it really doesn’t help that random strangers feel the need to tell me how shit it must be for me.

Bobbiepin · 16/07/2019 16:57

Oh was that the only question she asked? If so then yes that's rude! On par with "was your pregnancy planned" I think.

Elmo311 · 16/07/2019 17:00

@Bobbiepin yes, that's the only question she asked me !

OP posts:
PristineCondition · 16/07/2019 17:00

StCharlotte no both are his but most assume the eldest isn't because of the large gap

RiftGibbon · 16/07/2019 17:01

I don't think you're being oversensitive. This is the sort of so-called "small talk" that people try to justify by saying it's just making conversation.
It isn't. Making conversation is saying, "I ilke your hair", or "What a smiley baby" or "Hot today isn't it?"
Asking personal questions of a complete stranger is nothing other than rude. Personal questions are those about pregnancy, age gaps between children, body size & shape, skin colour and so forth.

Staysexyanddontgetmurdered · 16/07/2019 17:01

I don't get why people are so personal about these things. It happens the moment you become noticeably pregnant. "When are you due? What are you having?" Etc. None if your business I'm just trying to get on the fucking bus.
(Not grumpy and pregnant at all haha Grin)
