"OK, I'll bite" ?

It's one of those mysterious MN phrases that no one would use in real life. It sounds so pompous. The question wasnt aimed directly at you, Sharon!

Just eff off with your biting.

It's only recently appeared and has certainly taken hold. Another one is 'I've found my people'.

PinkieTuscadero · 12/07/2019 20:23

DragonsOnRoof bit Wink

I didn't think they were MN phrases - the first in particular pre-dated the Internet

managedmis · 12/07/2019 20:24

Who gives a shit

MeetMeInMontauk · 12/07/2019 20:24

Ok, I'll bite.

I think it's used by respondents who are trying to add a serious contribution whilst acknowledging the presumed intentionally goady undertones of the original post.

Like this thread, for example.

BellyAching19 · 12/07/2019 20:25

It’s not as bad as “fuck off to the far side of fuck ... “ blah blah blah. Embarrassing and cringe worthy. As if anyone talks like that in real life

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 12/07/2019 20:27

“MN at its worst”

It’s never used on any of the threads that actually are atrocious. Always on silly threads where someone is whingeing about their MIL daring to want to see her grandchild and the people telling OP she is BU. That’s MN at its worst apparently Grin it’s so not.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 12/07/2019 20:27

You know what I hate? The trope of acting as if you're talking to a stupid or smallinded person, and giving them a female, likely to be in her mid fifties, name. Like you did, with your reference to Sharon. See also makes like Karen, Tracey, Yvonne etc. It's really fucking sexist. And ageism.

I'm in my 30s btw but I find the assumption that middle aged women are over sensitive, stupid and rude to be really fucking awful.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 12/07/2019 20:28

*small minded

ShatteredBrianne · 12/07/2019 20:28

Auntie - no one I real life says this, surely? It's awful

HoneysuckIejasmine · 12/07/2019 20:28

FFS! *Names

Howlovely · 12/07/2019 20:28

The worst one is, "No is a complete sentence". No, it isn't! I cringe every time I see it used when presumably trying to give wise advice.

ShatteredBrianne · 12/07/2019 20:31

Honeysuckle - you've read way too much into this thread.

If you're in your thirties you're middle aged too, Amanda.

Howlovely · 12/07/2019 20:32

I have never once thought of it as sexist honeysuckle. It's just a way of showing you're talking about the 'everyman', sorry, person. An average person, someome we all know. You're seeing it as a middle aged woman. Some people look for offence where none is intended, it must be exhausting to be permanently offended.

TrainWWYD · 12/07/2019 20:32

Am an actual amanda.

Feel triggered

TrainWWYD · 12/07/2019 20:32

THANKS KAREN

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 12/07/2019 20:32

Isn't "ok I'll bite" a very old phrase?

DragonsOnRoof · 12/07/2019 20:33

By the same token, why reply to a thread. Just scroll by.

You're getting all red in the face over a phrase, then making a bigger deal out of it by posting a thread. I'm offering a peaceful solution: The Scrolling On By.

ShatteredBrianne · 12/07/2019 20:34

Its ageist to assume every sharon is middle aged. Its transphobic to assume all Sharon's are female. Its 2019 after all

TrainWWYD · 12/07/2019 20:34

@DragonsOnRoof is definitely a Susan

JassyRadlett · 12/07/2019 20:35

Been around for ages, OP. Sorry.

Here’s one from a decade ago. forum.wordreference.com/threads/ill-bite.1092586/

Do you also struggle with ‘take the bait’?

QueenOfIce · 12/07/2019 20:35

Op I thought this the other day, usually on the Brexit threads.
