to not want to sign off my emails with preferred pronouns?

AlphaBites · 10/07/2019 21:46

We've had an email do the rounds today at work saying in the next few weeks all staff are expected to sign off with their preferred pronouns, to save any embarrassment for any staff. Hmm

I don't want to.

Can I fight this somehow?

I can still be seen by a doctor of my choice, I can ask for a specific one if I have a preference etc...

Can you though? I'm not sure if this is actually in place yet (Scotland) but, under self ID you are not allowed to ask the gender (or sex) of the Dr, even if you have specifically requested only female medical staff for valid reasons. So, we must protect the right of someone with a penis not to be "outed" but at the same time allow them to interact medically with someone who has experienced trauma that has meant they no longer want to be in a vulnerable position with a person with a penis.

In prison (again in Sotland) they did an assessment to understand the impact of someone self IDing as a woman being in a men's prison, and concluded that it would be better for them to be in a woman's prison. They did no impact assessment on the effect that having men who had committed sexual and violent attacks on women would have on the actual women in prison, including woman who had suffered such attacks before. Many of those have gone on to attack both prisoners and guards including threatening rape.

The amount of sexual and violent attacks against staff and prisoners has gone up significantly in women's prisons but this can't be attributed to men, because there are no "men" in women's prisons...Hmm

Also, why just trans issues? It would be a hell of a lot easier for me to come out to my colleagues as having mental health issues (which affect 1 in 4 people, so actually a lot more people than are trans) if everyone else was made to state the health issues they have. I hope you can all see why this is, to put it mildly, not an acceptable request?

RosesAndRaindrops · 12/07/2019 23:07

We must be kind by doing this tiny little hardly anything no-matter thing, otherwise you will dox us, get us fired and threaten us? I see.

I haven't done any of that just to be clear, I'm with you on it's not good to threaten with that

GCAcademic · 12/07/2019 23:08

It’s a shame @MNHQ deleted that post. I think threats and abuse of that nature should be left to stand so that people can see what women are up against when we refuse to submit to the totalitarian ideology that genderists espouse.

WaxOnFeckOff · 12/07/2019 23:09

I think it's more to make it seem normal instead of othering

But it's not normal though is it? In the definition of normal being standard, expected, usual etc.

OldCrone · 12/07/2019 23:10

I can still be seen by a doctor of my choice, I can ask for a specific one if I have a preference etc...

So let's say I ask to see a female doctor, and I find myself in an appointment with a doctor who is clearly male, but reassures me that he 'feels like a woman'. What do you suggest I do then, roses?

OldCrone · 12/07/2019 23:11

I agree, GCAcademic.

OldCrone · 12/07/2019 23:14

We must be kind by doing this tiny little hardly anything no-matter thing, otherwise you will dox us, get us fired and threaten us?

And if it's such a tiny little insignificant thing, why are they making such a fuss about it? Either it's important (and if it's important to them, we should really examine how important it might be to other groups), or it's not, and we can all just ignore it.

Siameasy · 12/07/2019 23:17

To make it seem normal?

It isn’t normal. I don’t need to state my sex on an email signature. It isn’t relevant. I would be asking my workplace why I’m required to highlight that I’m female. Do I need to be rubber stamped or wear a sticker or have a flashing light on my head.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 12/07/2019 23:20

I can still be seen by a doctor of my choice, I can ask for a specific one if I have a preference etc

Can you? If I ask for a female doctor, can I really be sure now that I'll get a female doctor? And yes, of course we still have the right to vote, own property etc, but the erosion of language to do with women is very dangerous. How many ads/ companies/ pro-choice activists have we seen recently referring to us as "people with uteruses", "menstruators" etc. The whole basis of discrimination against women is the deeply held belief of many that we are nothing more than walking body parts. All this "don't reduce me to my genitals" stuff is well and good, but the fact is that we need to talk about women as a group, and the only way we can do that is by talking about biology because that's the only thing all women have in common. So if we can't all be referred to as women - if that isn't the word that connects us - then we can only be referred to as body parts. We live in a world that is working at record pace to remove our reproductive rights, legitimise the concept of "sex work", champion the porn industry, and commercialise our uteruses for a growing surrogacy market - we do not need to be dehumanised any further!

If biology is the basis for female oppression, who benefits from obscuring that message, corrupting that language, and vilifying the people fighting for liberation on that basis? Not you, not me, and not transmen.

XXcstatic · 12/07/2019 23:28

I can still be seen by a doctor of my choice, I can ask for a specific one if I have a preference etc

Wrong. A woman who asked for a female HCP for a cervical smear got a transwoman link. Although this patient received an apology, many trans activists argued vehemently at the time that women should have to accept TW as female HCPs, even if the patients were survivors of sexual assault.

Soon, though, this won't be relevant, because women will no longer be allowed to express the idea that there is a difference between a biological woman HCP and a TW. How can you ask for a biological female HCP if the words to make the request are taboo? If the request is treated with the same distaste and rejection as it would be (quite rightly) if a patient refused an HCP who was black or Jewish? That is why language is so important. If women are not allowed to defend their rights, their rights become meaningless, whether or not they still exist on paper.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 12/07/2019 23:31

If women are not allowed to defend their rights, their rights become meaningless, whether or not they still exist on paper.

Exactly, like all those shelters and refuges who will have their funding withdrawn if the invoke their legal right to exclude TW under the single sex exemption clause. Our rights have already been significantly eroded, and it's only getting worse.

Ereshkigal · 12/07/2019 23:37

I think it's more to make it seem normal instead of othering?^
That's how I see it anyway

Sure.

Ereshkigal · 12/07/2019 23:43

Raindrops on roses
And penises on women
Bright male uteruses to keep a kid in
Brown paper gimp suits tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

RosesAndRaindrops · 12/07/2019 23:48

I actually do not even have a clue what Erishgal is on about?
Nice little rhyme there, did you enjoy your singsong?

Sure
Confused
Not sure what you're sure' ing at, that's literally my opinion?
I never claimed it was yours.

Jellylegsni · 12/07/2019 23:49

I think it's more to make it seem normal instead of othering

Who is it helpful for? Assuming there is a transgender person in the workplace I would imagine a part of their transition would be changing their name to one corresponding to their new identity?

RosesAndRaindrops · 12/07/2019 23:49

Who the f mentioned gimp suits, it's a thread about preferred pronouns lol.
I kind of want to ask R U OK hun?!

Ereshkigal · 12/07/2019 23:50

Yes, opinions are a wonderful thing.

RosesAndRaindrops · 12/07/2019 23:50

Yes, opinions are a wonderful thing.
They are indeed. We can agree on that at least.

Ereshkigal · 12/07/2019 23:51

How are the kumquats and oranges?

Ereshkigal · 12/07/2019 23:52

Oh sorry, that's just my version of roses and raindrops. Ignore me Grin

RosesAndRaindrops · 12/07/2019 23:53

How are the kumquats and oranges?

Absolutely no idea what you're on about, sorry.
So I'll answer equally randomly
I like eating kumquats and I like eating oranges.
I love fruit
A kumquat and orange fruit salad sounds yummy

Ereshkigal · 12/07/2019 23:58

I love fruit

Me too. Especially kumquats, oranges and also kiwi fruits. Lovely. All that vitamin C.

Likeazombi · 13/07/2019 00:02

Goodie it's recipe time.
The only time I eat apples is in coleslaw.
I'm going to pick strawberries next week, now they're in season.

omione · 13/07/2019 00:14

Can my preffered pronoun(whatever the fuck that means) "This fucking fucker is fucked" ?
