Sarcelle
Pretty much agree.
I think it has nothing to do with money, more behaviour and how one lives.
According to here i am common . I have a tattoo and grew up in a council house. ( I remember the bathroom and kitchen fitted) I have no degree which i regret ( but not possible) Yet dh I regard as common .They were wealthy at a time, his family always owned their home and car and they had a beautiful primrose bathroom long before he was born!,
He is common because he has poor manners ( made worse with depression) , has no interest in appearance , never using a napkin( we always did even when poor)
Would not use the right cutlery, such as a fish knife or soup or dessert spoon . He uses any knife or spoon .
My dear departed English grandmother whom I adored and am supposed to be like ( but I could never be remotely as good )
She was poor but was a lady. She dressed , spoke like a lady and nothing common about her ever.

ThighsRelief · 18/07/2019 11:47

Cry have you seen the thread about how cheeky it is for a council house person to complain re getting kitchens and bathrooms fitted. Meant to tug their forelock instead I think.

It's whatever people think it is, it's subjective and intended to insult or feel superior to someone else. Most of the answers on here are from people who like to judge others based on their narrow minded view of the world. We are all common in some shape or form because we are all people who can't appeal to everyone. The term 'chavvy' is more frequently used today and means the same thing.

Originally it meant the lower classes but our class system doesn't really exist anymore in the same way as it did in the past so people find all kinds of ways to justify having vile opinions. The classiest way to be is inclusive and supportive to all types of people but honestly don't self categorise or you'll sound wanky. Things you've mentioned like talking to the neighbours is utterly ridiculous and common sense should tell you that!

We all have inner thoughts on what is and isn't acceptable behaviour but unless you go through each thing individually and discuss it properly then it's just personal preference. I don't like tv soaps, but if I say watching them makes a person common then I'm imagining I'm a superior person because I don't which is daft.

isthatapugunicorn · 18/07/2019 12:30

Absolutely nothing, it doesn't exist. It's not the 1950's.
Personally I can't stand snobbery, and being a snob transcends all social levels IMHO.

ThighsRelief · 18/07/2019 12:53

Elves your post is perfection.

probstimeforanewname · 18/07/2019 12:56

Just being inconsiderate to others. That has nothing to do with "breeding" or income or "class".

Examples would be playing loud music in a quiet carriage of a train.

Pushing past people on a plane/train to get off - generally pushing in

And yes I'd say smoking but that's not "common" it's just stupid.

Having money doesn't equal class. I wouldn't say people were "common", I'd just say they lacked class (and manners). And I think we all lack manners at times, nobody is perfect and we all have bad days. So ultimately we're all "common" at times.

NoTheresa · 18/07/2019 12:56

Using fish knives is common - contrary to popular belief.

probstimeforanewname · 18/07/2019 12:58

Oh and I think getting hung up on cutlery etiquette is "common" because it is trying to put other people down and make them uncomfortable.

NoTheresa · 18/07/2019 12:58

Pimp mobiles - pronounced “mobeeeels” - preferably black with tinted windows.

probstimeforanewname · 18/07/2019 13:00

My grandmother (who grew up in a very working class part of Lancashire) thought eating fish and chips in the street was common.

floribunda18 · 18/07/2019 13:45

Grey-blonde 1980s highlights and a really high/shaved at the back graduated bob. Dowager's hump at the back and a neck tattoo on it, often with names of children. Looks like it has been written on in biro.

Partner walks and looks like a bulldog wearing a wet nappy. Leg tattoos. Very white and pricey trainers.

Younger version of this, female, really scraped back hair, or lank/long stripper hair and a velour tracksuit. Male- constant wearing of sports gear when the closest he gets is slumping on a sofa with lager watching the Arsenal. He has already started work on the beer belly at age 25.

Overly loud voices, anti-social, selfish, belligerent attitude to life. Says "my holiday/wedding, my rules" and so on. The descendants of Gin Lane.

LOL time!

woodhill · 18/07/2019 14:07

Yes eating in the street is a bit meh in all honesty.

We were told at school this in the 80s not to eat in our school uniforms in the street and it is at the back of my mind.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 18/07/2019 14:16

We used to get detention if caught! That was late 60s/early 70s though.

TeachesOfPeaches · 18/07/2019 14:30

Many moons ago on Eastenders I remember there being a conversation about how names that end in 'y' are common. Something to do with Tiffany Mitchell naming her child Courtney.

Just looked on Wiki and apparently that happened in 1997 - must have affected me very deeply.

MonSacEstDu31RueCambon · 18/07/2019 17:58

Evan Rosemary! 🤣

MrsGrammaticus · 18/07/2019 18:07

People who 'pick and graze' at food like grapes in the supermarket or pick at food with their fingers from buffets in restaurants or in a works canteen from the hot food counter ....I can't bear that behaviour.

Azzizam · 18/07/2019 19:21

Grubby grey trackie bottoms on men especially when you can see the outline of their willy.

CatDuck · 18/07/2019 19:37

This is quite snobbish to admit but you asked OP.

What I find 'common':

  • Simple mindedness
  • Being very self absorbed
  • Being a snob i know that's a bit ironic probably
  • Using any kind of room freshener especially the electric ones Envy
  • Feeding your family mostly processed foods
  • Pretentiousness, any kind of bragging
  • Paying more attention to your looks than your health or your education
  • Cosmetic surgery and botox unless it's due to serious mental health issues.
  • Not reading books
  • Gaming sorry
  • Being very loudly spoken or compulsively needing to be in the centre of attention
  • Not looking after your teeth
  • Talking about drinking all the time e.g. "shriiiiiiiek it's wine 'o clock", 'cocktails with the girls' and such
  • Always drinking lots being able to socialise with friends
  • Being very tribal e.g. always being with the same group of friends

I know, I'm being very judgmental with the above. I would never tell anyone of course, as I think being openly judgemental is also rather 'common' Grin.

I am probably as common as muck ah well.
