AIBU about a Jacket Potato?

Nameohchangeoh · 10/07/2019 18:38

Obviously lighthearted! But my DH thinks that making a microwave ‘jacket’ potato is a good enough substitution for a proper oven jacket potato.

I think that it should have a delicious crunchy shell to fill with creamy, salty butter... mmmmm!

So, AIBU to say that microwave Jacket potatoes are not a good substitute?

Cook in the microwave and then put into the oven to crisp for a bit

PrayingandHoping · 10/07/2019 18:39

Microwave and then put in oven. Then you'll get the crispy skin 👍

Lazypuppy · 10/07/2019 18:51

Microwave then oven. Quicker and then crispy

Nameohchangeoh · 10/07/2019 18:52

Time wise I suppose he is right (as long as it goes in the oven after like you say - which he doesn’t Confused).
But, I still think that it tastes so much nicer and the potato is much softer when it has been in the oven.

Absolutely nuke it first then crisp the skin in the oven or under the grill. Anything else is BVU Grin

marvellousnightforamooncup · 10/07/2019 19:08

I'm with the others. Nuke in micro, finish in oven.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 10/07/2019 19:10

Microwave is for cheating bastards. Oven is the only true way. All hail the oven

Livebythecoast · 10/07/2019 19:12

2 normal sized potatoes - microwave for 10 - 12 mins - poke with knife (softish) high oven setting for 15/20 mins - soft inside and proper crunchy jacket Smile.
I never order jacket spuds when eating out, soft skin etc ewwww 🥔

blissfullyignorantorinpain · 10/07/2019 19:13

Oven all the way. But how do ppl manage to get a crispy skin?

SquigglePigs · 10/07/2019 19:13

I can't stand the taste of a microwave jacket potato; it tastes weird. At a push giving it a head start in the microwave then putting in the oven can work if desperate.

Olive oil and salt!

Vibiano · 10/07/2019 19:15

@blissfullyignorantorinpain
Brush with olive oil and turn up the heat for a few minutes at the end

Livebythecoast · 10/07/2019 19:15

@Jebuschristchocolatebar.
Amen to the cheating bastards 🤣

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 10/07/2019 19:15

Never had a decent microwaved jacket potato - always do them in the oven

cardibach · 10/07/2019 19:16

Microwaved then finished in the oven is an absolute no. Flesh texture all wrong. Skin crispness not crisp enough. Either do it properly in the oven or have something else.

tearinmybeer · 10/07/2019 19:18

Hi, just here for the eventual Brian Harvey chat.

Rachelover40 · 10/07/2019 19:20

Not unreasonable at all. I do microwave them but then put in the oven to finish off and get crusty. Yum!

Worlds0kayestmum · 10/07/2019 19:20

My OH only likes them microwaved, I much much prefer them oven baked. I have one in the oven at the moment in fact

TSSDNCOP · 10/07/2019 19:21

YANBU

Microwaved potatoes are beyond minging. I am making Ack noises for emphasis.

recrudescence · 10/07/2019 19:23

As others have said, must be crisped in oven after microwaving. If microwave only then your husband is a monster. Divorce.

BigRedLondonBus · 10/07/2019 19:23

I always do them in the microwave. I’m too impatient to cook them in the oven as it takes so long!

BringMeThatHorizon · 10/07/2019 19:23

I'm one of the weird ones who only likes them microwaved! I hate them crispy. If I ever do get a jacket potato with crispy skin I just eat the middle out of it and leave the rest.

BikeRunSki · 10/07/2019 19:23

Aga is the best way. Or oven. MW only if desperate.

Deadringer · 10/07/2019 19:23

They are definitely better cooked in the oven, but i do occasionally nuke them in the microwave then crisp in the oven for speed.

IsabelleSE19 · 10/07/2019 19:25

LTB. Microwave jackets are an abomination.
