AIBU about a Jacket Potato?

Obviously lighthearted! But my DH thinks that making a microwave ‘jacket’ potato is a good enough substitution for a proper oven jacket potato.

I think that it should have a delicious crunchy shell to fill with creamy, salty butter... mmmmm!

So, AIBU to say that microwave Jacket potatoes are not a good substitute?

We have a combi microwave with a special jacket potato setting. Crispy jackets in about 12 minutes...still not good enough for my Boyfriend. Insists on baking for at least an hour. Which I get. Oven tastes better, but when getting in from work at 6 and trying to get some food into DD, before she calls childline, I can't wait an hour

Utter abomination microwaved potatoes not even to part cook

They’re best done in a bonfire/campfire but for mist of us that’s simply not that practical in the week

Next best is the Aga for hours

But the oven is a good enough substitute
On hot for a good hour & a half

Microwaved is an abomination - not evening finished in the oven

Oil & salt definitely improve things

Thus thread was BAD to open when I’m LOW carbing!! 😢

I never know how to do them in the oven...do you wrap in foil?

Juells · 11/07/2019 10:47

formerbabe - no, wash, oil, prick all over and add salt if you want. Then put straight on shelf in middle or towards top of oven. I used to do them for three quarters of an hour, but saw someone else doing them for hour and a half and they were much nicer. That's what I do now.

formerbabe · 11/07/2019 10:51

@Juells

Thanks .. will be the kids dinner tonight!

LoopIt · 11/07/2019 11:06

Oven is the only way.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/07/2019 11:10

Why did I come in here? I'm low-carbing and now I really want a baked potato.

tearinmybeer · 11/07/2019 11:11

@TowandaForever and others, it wasn't a suicide attempt, although it could be argued he'd had some issues, and certainly have some now.

Long story short, he ate three tuna and sweetcorn jacket potatoes than ran himself over with his own car. (he was okay). But it's a warning to all who may not consider jacket potatoes to be very, very dangerous.

Both are vile! HTH

Pinktinker · 11/07/2019 11:44

Microwave then oven is the quickest and best way. I do like them just in the oven but it takes too long and I’m impatient.

Peralta · 11/07/2019 13:49

Would it be weird to ask you to post photos? I've never had one. Please don't shoot me 😂

Twuntsrule · 11/07/2019 18:42

Slice nearly in half (lengthwise) and nuke for about 2-3 minutes, flip over and repeat. Then place in oven, with either olive oil or butter rubbed on skin, then salted with pink sea salt, for about 20 minutes, flip, cook another 20 minutes. Better still, place on gas BBQ grill rather than in oven so that the skin chars beautifully. I'm part Irish, and we DO love our Mickeys!

Cheeserton · 11/07/2019 18:49

Lord, no. It's a second rate shortcut, which is valid when absurdly short of time, but certainly an inferior option.

Nameohchangeoh · 11/07/2019 19:05

Sorry @Juells that probably wasn’t the best link, I wouldn’t ever laugh at someone in that situation. As @tearinmybeer said, he is absolutely fine.

He even wrote a song about it and acted out the scenario in the video. Strange but true.

I am so glad I posted this thread, because I won the argument I have learnt a few new JP tips. Thank you oveners.

Proper oven baked jackets don’t need tin foil and taste amazing. Microwaved ones always have a different texture - slightly steamed / boiled instead of buttery soft

TinyMystery · 11/07/2019 19:23

Microwave foreplay is a reasonable quick fix if you really fancy a jacket potato in a hurry, but it definitely has to be finished off in the oven.

PPs are right about open/campfire being the best way to do it though!
