AIBU about a Jacket Potato?

Nameohchangeoh · 10/07/2019 18:38

Obviously lighthearted! But my DH thinks that making a microwave ‘jacket’ potato is a good enough substitution for a proper oven jacket potato.

I think that it should have a delicious crunchy shell to fill with creamy, salty butter... mmmmm!

So, AIBU to say that microwave Jacket potatoes are not a good substitute?

@HappydaysArehere Thank you, I have just found one, it’s called an ‘aluminium potato baker’ in case anyone else wants to give it a go.

Coeliac queen of the baked potato here reporting for duty. 😊

Sorry, but you’re all wrong.

The finest baked potato known to man is cooked a halogen oven. Crispy on the outside, fluffy and light in the middle, and faster than a traditional oven baked potato.

Agree rub with olive oil and scatter with rock salt when entertaining.

Worth the modest cost of a halogen oven alone. 🥔

HopeIsNotAStrategy · 10/07/2019 20:04

Or even sea salt!

CloserIAm2Fine · 10/07/2019 20:10

I microwave then crisp it up in the oven

I wouldn't even call it a jacket potato if it'd been cooked in the microwave. It's just a hot potato.

My MIL serves microwaved potatoes as a side dish with something like lasagne. No butter or cheese or anything on it. Just a sad dry warm potato with soggy skin.

NeverTalksToStrangers · 10/07/2019 20:16

The frozen McCain ones are delicious. Yabu

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 10/07/2019 20:16

I will microwave and crisp in the oven with olive oil and sea salt.

The skin is good for you so microwaving is less healthy as the skin is rank

Oven all the way. But how do ppl manage to get a crispy skin?

Put rubber gloves on, dribble oil in hands, rub all over potatoes. Prick all over, shake on salt. Put in oven for hour and a half. Alternatively, put in oven for shorter period at super-duper high heat. I've had potatoes explode in the oven on occasion Grin

Wereonabearhunt · 10/07/2019 20:24

Microwave only is for a cba meal at work.

At home its microwave then finish in the oven.

I don’t know whether that makes me feel more sad or sick!! Envy

Home from work in the Everhot oven have a cup of tea and small snack, have a gin, check potato. If late home from work put in microwave then Everhot.

Justmeandtwokids · 10/07/2019 20:31

Microwave combi oven - whack it on the jacket potatoes programme - takes 25 mins for 4 potatoes. Kids have the middle scooped out so more delicious crispy skins for me!

TroysMammy · 10/07/2019 20:34

If you bake a potato by putting a metal skewer through it it cooks quicker as the metal also cooks it from the inside.

Wrongdissection · 10/07/2019 20:37

@tearinmybeer that is one of my favourite ever stories. like wtf? He ran himself over on his own car 😂😂

MustardScreams · 10/07/2019 20:38

In the oven with a metal skewer. There is no other way! About half a pack of Shirgar butter smushed in when done. Glory.

igotdemons · 10/07/2019 20:42

I always do mine in the oven but I never put anything on the skin (less calories!) and they always come out lovely and crispy. I’ve just this week discovered that Waitrose do a larger potato especially for baking (picked for their ‘crispy skins’ apparently) and they are delicious! Their skins really crisp up in the oven and their insides are soooo fluffy! 🤤

Benjispruce · 10/07/2019 20:43

We do them in the oven if in the week but oven if we have time.

Benjispruce · 10/07/2019 20:44

Microwave in the week that should have read.

Sweetooth92 · 10/07/2019 20:44

Heathen, utter heathen. I’d be seriously considering his future fate-eyes patio.

Olive oil. Salt. Oven for a long time.

Topped with lashings of butter, cheese, tinned mince and more cheese

(In my defence-the weird tinned mince obsession came from getting jacket potatoes from the market stall man when I was at school on a Friday-whatever you wanted for £1. It’s a very nostalgic guilty pleasure on a chilly winter evening. I would not touch tinned mince on anything else 😂 but sometimes it’s necessary to be a little grotty)

TowandaForever · 10/07/2019 20:47

@tearinmybeer tell me more about Brian Harvey?!?!

ThanosSavedMe · 10/07/2019 20:49

You obviously have to LTB. You have no choice.

WaterOffaDucksCrack · 10/07/2019 20:49

There's no way I'm putting the oven on for an hour or two for a bloody potato you're clearly not a serious potato eater then!

MustardScreams · 10/07/2019 20:50

@TowandaForever he ran himself over with his own car (and put himself on life support) after eating too many jacket potatoes.

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 10/07/2019 20:50

Oven, always oven! Then slice a cross on the top, squash in at bottom to make insides sit on top, good knob of best butter and a huge dollop of cheese savory ❤ every time!

billybagpuss · 10/07/2019 20:53

Oven baked as a minimum, but best done for several hours in the grate of the fire.
