AIBU about a Jacket Potato?

Nameohchangeoh · 10/07/2019 18:38

Obviously lighthearted! But my DH thinks that making a microwave ‘jacket’ potato is a good enough substitution for a proper oven jacket potato.

I think that it should have a delicious crunchy shell to fill with creamy, salty butter... mmmmm!

So, AIBU to say that microwave Jacket potatoes are not a good substitute?

Much better cooked in the oven

shrumps · 10/07/2019 19:29

Oven only. Never, ever microwave. Totally with you OP.

bridgetreilly · 10/07/2019 19:32

In the oven, with oil and salt. The only way.

fernandoanddenise · 10/07/2019 19:39

@tearinmybeer lol

MerdedeBrexit · 10/07/2019 19:40

Oven is the only way.

Hippychickster · 10/07/2019 19:42

Microwave is for cheating bastards. Oven is the only true way. All hail the oven

Totally agree. Microwave potatoes are rank. A good couple of hours in the oven makes a delicious jacket potato!

RiftGibbon · 10/07/2019 19:42

Mine never come out well in the microwave - they seem to have a hard crusty bit where they've been in contact with the plate/dish/whatever they're on. That's with or without the special selection for 'potato'.
Oven all the way for me.

InventedthePostIt · 10/07/2019 19:43

My husband does this too. So wrong. Jacket potato must be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside preferably topped with beans and lots of melted cheese.

PooWillyBumBum · 10/07/2019 19:44

YANBU

microwave is a poor substitute, even if crisped a bit in the oven. Never gets that thick skin and fluffy inside.

Bridget1983 · 10/07/2019 19:44

How hard is it to put a potato in an oven for an hour?! Soooo much nicer

SongforSal · 10/07/2019 19:45

In the oven is best sprinkled with sea salt and olive oil. Not the same in the microwave!

ThePinkCushion · 10/07/2019 19:47

Mine does. Crispy skin and fluffy inside every time. There's no way I'm putting the oven on for an hour or two for a bloody potato. I could cook far more delicious and filling things in that time.

Nuttyaboutnutella · 10/07/2019 19:49

I've recently started doing mine in the air fryer, perfect evety time.

Aside from that, micro to start it off then oven to crisp up

AnnaMagnani · 10/07/2019 19:49

Will microwave and then finish in the oven for speed but it is a poor potato compared to one done fully in the oven.

Your husband is wrong.

For crispiness score cross in potato and rub all over with oil. Does not need to be olive. Put in oven and bake.

PancakeAndKeith · 10/07/2019 19:49

Well I don’t have a microwave but if I did I still wouldn’t cook a jacket potato in it.

martinidry · 10/07/2019 19:50

LTB.

GroggyLegs · 10/07/2019 19:51

The humble jacket potato is having a revival in my house right now.

Shove potatoes in the oven on the timer, out you go for the day, amazing dinner awaits you on your return.

It literally cannot get any better.
Living my dream life.

Nameohchangeoh · 10/07/2019 19:52

Thank you to all you oven lovers, DH is now sulking because he is clearly wrong GrinGrin

It does totally come down to crispy skin and fluff factor.

@RiftGibbon Yes!!!! That hard bit is so horrible! Envy

Oven otherwise grim

HappydaysArehere · 10/07/2019 19:53

Cover the skins with butter and then bake high in the oven. Used to be able to get a gadget with prongs that went into the potatoes which helped to bake them faster.

KaliforniaDreamz · 10/07/2019 19:53

yes yes to oil. and salt.

Nameohchangeoh · 10/07/2019 19:54

@GroggyLegs That is a genius idea!! I’m am stealing that.

Deffo Oven.

Xxalisoncxx · 10/07/2019 19:57

Nicer in the oven but.... I’m far too much of a greedy cow to wait for them to cook in the oven, when I can shove them down my gob in 10 minutes!!!

BetterAlone · 10/07/2019 19:59

No YANBU! Oven only imho.
