AIBU about a Jacket Potato?

Nameohchangeoh · 10/07/2019 18:38

Obviously lighthearted! But my DH thinks that making a microwave ‘jacket’ potato is a good enough substitution for a proper oven jacket potato.

I think that it should have a delicious crunchy shell to fill with creamy, salty butter... mmmmm!

So, AIBU to say that microwave Jacket potatoes are not a good substitute?

I agree with earlier poster... Would rather buy frozen jacket potato and microwave it.... Just microwaved is horrible

Unescorted · 10/07/2019 20:59

I had to get to page 3 before the metal skewer trick was mentioned.... quicker than a microwave and get the crispy skin.

Jellykat · 10/07/2019 21:01

Ha haaa, just eating one atm, a good nuked, previously frozen Mcains version.. Just got in from work and couldn't be arsed with cooking!
Tuna mayo, butter AND cheese, slipping down my throat like a ferret Grin So YABU!

RiftGibbon · 10/07/2019 21:01

Happydays we stick metal skewers through them and one time spoon handles because all the skewers had gone rusty

iklboo · 10/07/2019 21:05

Bake potato, scoop out flesh & mash with lots of butter, an egg yolk, bacon & spring onion and loads of sharp cheddar.

Spoon back into potato shells and stick under the grill until the cheese is melted and the top is slightly crispy.

Food. Of. The. Gods.

I’ve had a baked potato tonight. Microwaved for 6 mins, skin rubbed with oil, sprinkled with salt and then baked in the oven for 25 mins. Yum yum, crispy skin and lovely soft potato inside.

AcrossthePond55 · 10/07/2019 21:15

Better yet, butter & salt, double wrap in heavy duty tin foil and stick in the coals of a campfire (or wood stove). Heaven! Same method makes delish corn on the cob.

SilverySurfer · 10/07/2019 21:39

I would never put a jacket potato anywhere near the microwave. Oil the skin, shake over salt, pierce with a metal skewer to conduct heat to the middle to cook it faster, place in hot oven and yum.

Frozen McCains and equivalent are an abomination.

MustardScreams · 10/07/2019 21:55

@iklboo egg yolk in potato skins. You’ve just blown my mind, in an excellent way. I’m excited for dinner tomorrow!

Nameohchangeoh · 10/07/2019 22:05

@iklboo I do this too! Soufflé Potato, it really is the next level!! Smile

I love JPs, literally my favourite food!! I do prefer them ovened or micro then oven but I still like microwave if it's just me and not got loads of time.

Could live on them! Fav topping at the moment is butter, salt, cheese, sliced roast chicken and salad cream. Yum!

NoSauce · 10/07/2019 22:54

Microwave JP’s are horrible.

LadyRannaldini · 10/07/2019 22:57

I mucrowave them and then cut them in half, brush the skin with olive oil and blast under the grill.

Nousernameforme · 10/07/2019 23:02

I quite like them done in the slow cooker. If you want them crispy they will need to go in the oven afterwards. I do find that slowcooker potato skin is much nicer than microwave potato skin

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 10/07/2019 23:02

DH used to only eat the middle of a jacket potato, and throw the skin away! Turned out it's because he'd only ever cooked them in the microwave so didn't realise the crispy, salt and peppery goodness he was discarding when I cook them. We had jackets tonight, no skins in the bin.

PickAChew · 10/07/2019 23:04

I start off in the microwave, but only so they'll finish off in the half hour the oven is actually on for everything else.

BackforGood · 10/07/2019 23:07

Well, I'm clearly a minority but I much prefer the skin to be soft. I'd leave a crunchy skin, so I prefer microwaved, even before you think of the cost of having the oven on for an hour plus. Okay if you are baking a couple of dozen, but somewhat extravagant for just one!

oyoyoy · 10/07/2019 23:20

Since having a baby, I've seriously struggled to set aside time to eat anything but my cheats way of making myself a JP is to boil the potato first and then crisp it up in the oven/air fryer. Works every time.

Goldrill · 10/07/2019 23:28

... and after you've cooked it properly, in the oven, you should cut it in HALF. Not into quarters, because if you do quarters you can't fill it with lovely things. Yes DH; I'm looking at you.

SlipperyWhenWatery · 11/07/2019 01:39

It's extremely rare that I get an actually NICE crunchy jacket. So I don't mind soft skinned ones as long as they've been done nicely. And I like putting teeny weeny new potatoes in the microwave and giving them a squash after, adding some vitalite (I never did butter, butter would be acceptable too). I can't cook jacket spuds at all.

SimplySteveRedux · 11/07/2019 01:45

Never even thought of microwave then oven. Now I can get a jacket slathered with butter, salt, pepper, bacon and cheese faster. Yummmmmmmm!

Snowy81 · 11/07/2019 01:52

Microwave then oven!

But has anyone else lately noticed that when you order a bag of ‘baking potatoes’ they are all small? Nothing like the big ones we used to get. Now I find 4 minutes on either side, and they are ready for the oven. Used to be 12-16 minutes depending on how big they are. I miss big jackets.....

Oh no, it's awful! The poor guy, whether it was accident or suicide attempt. :(
