Oh God I hate this.

My mum did it to my old bedroom.

Four pillows (two piles of two).
Then about six random cushions.
The duvet
A kind of throw that has glass pendants dangling off the edges, which are hard (so you couldn't sleep with it on anyway) and noisy.

When you go to bed you have to take off all of these items and pile them up in the room by the side of a chair.

I don't get it. They don't serve any purpose.

Would much rather a simple bed, with a duvet on it, and two pillows!

I suppose it’s just a case of some people like a nice home and others don’t mind mess. So many mumsnetters have lovely homes. It just makes life a bit nicer really.

Seahorseshoe · 09/07/2019 12:37

There's a difference to putting pillows on your bed and the staged shots of instagram - the hat, who does that irl? Nobody.

Social media is bollocks and people only show you (usually) what they want you to see.

Chovihano · 09/07/2019 12:40

I don't see the point, when do you get to see it?
If you are like us and shag during the day, it hardly seems worth dressing a bed.

mumwon · 09/07/2019 12:40

my dm had a velour bedspread with a picture of a tiger...

bellsbuss · 09/07/2019 12:40

I have 2 throws, 4 pillows and 4 cushions , OH moans and says that it takes him 30 mins to get into bed Grin

I have two adult daughters. They both make their beds up like that every day with many pillows, throws, cushions etc. Even when they are leaving for work at 5.30am the bed still gets the full treatment.

God knows where it comes from - DH has never made a bed in our house, he considers it a waste of time and whilst I’m not as bad as him I certainly don’t go to the effort the girls do.

Instagram.

I'm with OP, I only make the bed when I change it. It gets a straighten up each day when we get back into it. By which i mean check the sheet hasn't come off and a flick of the duvet.

I do have lots of pillows on there though, on my side, but they are normal sleeping on pillows.

if your old bedroom is now a guest room and not used that often, I can understand why your mum chose to make it in a way she likes.

Seeingadistance · 09/07/2019 12:44

I have a duvet, 2 pillows, and usually between one and three cats on the bed.

It's annoying enough having to cast off extra pillows and cushions when staying in a hotel - why would I do it at home?

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 09/07/2019 12:46

when you go to bed? I like a tidy house, I don't like the look of my bed when it's a mess. It takes so little time to do.

notoafternoontea · 09/07/2019 12:46

OP are you my DH Hmm Grin

I have two throw pillows and a throw. They make me happy! I like a decorated bed.

What really drives him mad is that we have four actual pillows on the bed. He sleeps with two, but I only sleep with one. And throw one off, and wash the pillowcase every week. But I can't have just three on the bed. It would look.....wrong.

InsertFunnyUsername · 09/07/2019 12:46

My nanna has all kinds of madness on her bed. 6 normal pillows 4 "scatter cushions" a long dildo type cushion, a blanket that is folded on the end of the bed, a duvet and 2 sheets under. She takes all the pillows off except 3 Every. Single. Night! And they will be back on by the morning, she also has several different curtains that go with her bed sheets and changes them religiously because "if you cant be happy in bed when can you be?"

Who can actually be arsed with that 😩

Orbison · 09/07/2019 12:47

What do people do with the clothes from the wardrobe overspill?
Mine have overspilled all over the bedroom and on to the landing bannister. Confused

CountFosco · 09/07/2019 12:51

I think that excessively dressed look is a bit dated actually, Elle Decoration is full of unmade beds with crumpled bedlinen (made from actual linen natch) these days. That's my excuse anyway Wink.

That's what the exercise bike and 'the chair' are for.

crackofdoom · 09/07/2019 12:54

clovihano Totes, totes stealth boast Grin

a long dildo shaped cushion Well, isn't that a lovely thoughtful addition for her female guests? Bless Grin

My mum does the 1000 cushions thing. Well, she's retired, and the kids are long grown, what else are you going to do?

There's usually a teddy or two on the bed, and several dozen sitting on a chair next to it, staring at you. Every time I stay I have a merry 10 minutes chucking cushions at all 4 corners of the room.

MirandaGoshawk · 09/07/2019 12:54

I agree with you, OP. I hate decorative cushions with a passion. They end up on the floor/chair for half the time and they clutter the place up. I like the clean lines of a bed without all that stuff.

I also have one pillow and DH has two. So it's lopsided. I don't care, maybe because my parents' bed was always like that.

Littleblurry · 09/07/2019 12:55

We are lucky if the bed is even made in the morning! Getting the children to school/childminder and ourselves to work is always a bit of a scramble and we never seem to have a weekend with a free day or even any evening time to do such things. If I get a spare half hour I go out for a run or meal prep or mow the lawn which has become rather jungle like.

I'm very impressed with the amount of people on this thread that have the time to do it! Maybe this is specific to people who have time to reply during the day and the evening crowd will be as slovenly as me!

buttertoasty · 09/07/2019 12:56

I have 8 cushions, 2 throws and a tray with candles on

I am quite maximalist in terms of my taste in interiors

pippistrelle · 09/07/2019 12:56

I suppose it’s just a case of some people like a nice home and others don’t mind mess.

There are people who think all those cushions are a bit messy. Not having six stacking cushions is a far cry from messy.

I see it as a fashion, but not one that really appeals to me.

notso · 09/07/2019 12:57

I loathe stunt cushions and throws on the bed. They are neither use nor ornament.
If I stay somewhere with them I shove them straight in or on the wardrobe.
What is the appeal of pile of pointless dust gathering cushions on the bed then floor then bed then floor

crackofdoom · 09/07/2019 12:58

I mean, don't get me wrong, my bed is lovingly decorated. .....By the DC, who garnish it with mysterious objects made of Lego, and the cats, who leave clots of fur and muddy paw prints.

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 09/07/2019 12:58

What do people do with the clothes from the wardrobe overspill?

buy bigger wardrobe and declutter until it all fits. I really do hate mess!

likeacrow · 09/07/2019 12:58

Christ no. Have never seen the point in decorative pillows & throws on beds. And when they're all over a 'guest bed' at someone else's house it's just a load of pointless stuff to have to throw on the floor before you can actually get into bed. Daft.

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 09/07/2019 13:00

Littleblurry
it takes literally a minute to make a bed in the morning!

My kids bed are not pristine, but they are told to make them from little so it becomes a habit.
