I genuinely don't know how to deal with this

I'm posting here for traffic.

I have a 22 year old daughter in Uni. She has a student loan as I'm in no position to support her financially, I work for minimum wage and things are beyond tight. She's going to be starting her second year soon.

I live with DP who has a daughter due to start uni in September. She lives with her mum and sees her dad and me often.

After she had been accepted for uni, her mum decided that she wasn't going to help dsd with the cost. She is a lawyer.

She has told dsd that she must say she lives with us so that we can advise student finance that we're both in low paid jobs and she can get financial assistance.

We've both had the email today for us to apply for the finance for dsd.

I can't do it. Firstly, it's fraud. Secondly, even if I did do it, and it was uncovered that we were lying, they might think I was lying when I applied for my own dd and take away her finance.

Wtf do we do?? Dsd has been in tears with her dad, he obviously doesn't want to scupper her chances, she has worked SO hard for this. But her mum is resolute, and I know she will not change her mind. I've been with DP for 8 years now, and I know who she is.

Does anyone have any advice please? I've name changed for this and I don't think I've left anything out. Thanks in advance if you can help.

Because people here are telling me that what SF have said isn't true! I mean, obviously we're going ahead with this as you can see by my previous posts... But one pp has told me that her dh is a fraud investigator for SF and that whoever told me this info should lose their job!

Can you not see why I'm dubious?

I recorded the call for proof. As far as I'm concerned, that's all we need to go ahead - but surely, judging by some of the replies, you can understand why I'm confused with all the conflicting information.

It is a loan, a means tested loan. Not basing that on her Mother's household income, the DSD's full time home, is fraudulent.

Student loans have special interest rates and repayment criteria, of course checks for fraud need to be extensive including in to those that look to inflate their award by lying.

A recorded phone call will mean nothing if this application is looked in to in the future, really it just confirms you knew what you were doing when you signed.

Anyone can search on the Internet for the SLC's actual policy which is the opposite of what someone poorly trained in the call centre said today.

Alsohuman · 03/07/2019 23:32

They certainly do have special interest rates - higher than they should be by any measure.

Marmozet · 04/07/2019 06:07

It is fraud though.

You are going to move in your DSD for a month to allow the pretence that she lives with you.

All this in order to secure a loan.

If you've recording that phone call though which states you can do this then should the fraud team be involved they don't have a leg to stand on as you've been told my one of their employees you can do this.

Lessstressedhemum · 04/07/2019 11:31

It is indeed fraud. And to whoever said that the fraud investigation "powers" of slc should be stopped, student finance is government, and therefore tax payers', money. Of course they need to be able to investigate cases where people are providing false information to get more money than they are entitled to.
Would you say the same about the government's benefit fraud investigation teams?

Lessstressedhemum · 04/07/2019 11:34

Oh, and the interest rates are such that the amount of money due back maintains the value of the original loan. So, the rates reflect inflation.

Oh my, this thread is ridiculous.

Justathinslice · 04/07/2019 18:09

OP
Please listen to SFE....

Alsohuman · 04/07/2019 18:12

We have no inflation at the moment. None. And any minute now we’ll have deflation. Some people talk utter bollocks.

pazwaz70 · 05/07/2019 01:06

If it was that easy we would all say our child lived elsewhere! I hope you realise you apply through Gov.com & not student loans.
You can't hide much from them!!
