To refuse to give someone a lift because of their weight?

Someone I know is struggling to get to a hospital appointment. They dont qualify for hospital transport. We live rurally so public transport is limited.

I work near the hospital and they have strongly hinted that they would really appreciate a lift there. Normally I would be happy to offer. However, this person is very overweight. I dont know exactly how much he weighs but I know it's over 30 stone. I'm concerned about whether my car can take the weight. But maybe it can? I don't want to refuse if it wont damage my car.

WIBU to make an excuse to not give a lift?

Make sure he pays you good petrol money. Your fuel economy will take a major hit.

ThighsRelief · 25/06/2019 23:05

Why is it fat thread week again?

StillCoughingandLaughing · 25/06/2019 23:08

Why not strap him to the roof rack? Or pull him behind you on a trailer?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/06/2019 23:09

You could google the load limit on your car? Use some common sense?

@Spugzbunny how does that help? The total load limit for my car wouldnt tell.me what the load limit is for an individual seat woukd it?

If you divided it by 4 for each wheel it would give you an idea.

GreyHare · 25/06/2019 23:12

What car do you have? How far is the hospital? are there any steep hills on the way? as if you have a small twiddly town car then it may be a struggle but if you have a sturdy larger car then I can't see it being an issue, for instance I have a golf and regularly have two larger passengers of I would imagine 18 stone and 16 stone plus my overweight self of 11 stone in the car and it's fine, I can tell there is extra weight in the car but it doesn't have that much of an effect and my suspension is fine.

ImNotReallyAWaitress · 25/06/2019 23:12

Erm, total load of car divided by 2, 4, 5... however many seats you have = individual load.
Rocket science 🚀 🤯

purplelila2 · 25/06/2019 23:12
Shock 😂😂😂😂 is this serious
homeishere · 25/06/2019 23:13

What car do you drive? A small Ford aka/Yaris/fiat 500 and yeah, it might damage it/affect the balance of handling etc on sharp turns.

A Range Rover/MPV etc and you’ll be fine.

You don’t have to give the person a lift either way.

WomanLikeMeLM · 25/06/2019 23:14

They would qualify for a Bariatric Ambulance, i think another call from perhaps this persons GP to Ambulance Control would work.

Sparklfairy · 25/06/2019 23:15

OP, be honest now, you've got a massive fuck off range rover haven't you Grin

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/06/2019 23:18

@Soupdragon that's brilliant. I.must be very tired as I hadn't thought of that. Blush

So I've looked at the total.load limit for passengers and divided it by 4 which gives just over 93kg per seat. So about 15 stone? And he is more than double that.

My car is quite sturdy but also quite old. Maybe it will be ok as a one off. I'd like to help out if I can

Just say no - not your problem.
There are taxis available?

whogoncheckmeBoo · 25/06/2019 23:21

Are you Noddy?

Sparklfairy · 25/06/2019 23:24

In that case in all seriousness I wouldn't take him. It's not like he's just over and you could think oh well just this once. Double the weight limit is far too much.

carla1983 · 25/06/2019 23:25

"In that case in all seriousness I wouldn't take him. It's not like he's just over and you could think oh well just this once. Double the weight limit is far too much."

I wouldn't either, I think you're putting your car at risk. Not worth it.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/06/2019 23:26

Are you Noddy?

Er, no, I'm someone who's worried about a considerable amount of weight being over one wheel of my car. Confused

Tallgreenbottle · 25/06/2019 23:29

Erm just tell them to get a taxi. What's the issue there? Also at 30+ stone they would qualify for a private ambulance, and if for some reason, not, they can pay for one.

Maryqueenofscots83 · 25/06/2019 23:30

"Why not strap him to the roof rack? Or pull him behind you on a trailer?"

Yes, like this.

To refuse to give someone a lift because of their weight?
Hithere12 · 25/06/2019 23:30

If your car can take 4 passengers as well as you, it can cope with one 30 stone person

But those four people would be evenly spread over four seats.

YANBU OP

They can get an Uber. Don’t risk damaging your car to be “nice”

ReapersHowler · 25/06/2019 23:31

This is so familiar. Is his house up a hill and you run a tiny car? Also he has an equally fat partner.

DishingOutDone · 25/06/2019 23:31

A previous poster asked are you the OP who posted about taking someone shopping up a hill and thought they were too fat. Well @EmmaGrundyForPM - are you?

quizqueen · 25/06/2019 23:34

There's a difference between 4 people's weight spread around the car and one person equalling 3 people'sweight on one seat. I'd say no and I'd say why too but I'm not shy!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/06/2019 23:35

@TallGreenBottle

Taxis to/from here to town are £20 each way and I dont think hes got much money. He'd have to get a taxi back but I could help out by taking him.

I did suggest he try hospital transport but he said he had asked and didn't qualify. I might suggest he goes back and asks again.

To be fair he's not actually asked me directly just dropped some heavy hints plus he knows I've done it for other people so I'm feeling guilty if I don't offer. On the other hand I cant afford any damage to my car. ...

I'm not sure what the reference is?
No hills round here. As I said in a previous post, my car is quite sturdy but old.

I dont think his partner is coming with him, shes a bit overweight but nothing out of the ordinary. I've given her a lift before to the supermarket
