How are people not more outraged? And no, tourists do not visit the UK specifically because of the royal family.

"This year, 320,000 people were recorded as homeless in Britain"

I have no idea what you are talking about (is it on today's news?)

They haven’t finished yet - landscaping and external redecoration to come. I don’t think the tax payers should pay - no.

EdtheBear · 25/06/2019 11:10

I'm assuming Ops referring to the money spent on their house.
It needed £2m worth of work. Which includes water supply, electricity supply and renovation works. Actually it sounds like it was a derelict building before they sorted it.

It's money that probably needed spent and helps keep the construction industry going. And provided some work for people.

IsabellaLinton · 25/06/2019 11:10

It’s an obscene waste of money.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 25/06/2019 11:10

I bloody love Meghan and Harry but I was a bit "WTF?!" when I heard that figure.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 25/06/2019 11:11

They can’t decide if they want to be the Clooneys or deign to show themselves out for posh events with Queenie and pretend just for long enough they are part of the Royal Family to justify how much money they get

All that money on their home and now they want to fuck off to Africa and live in an titivated mud hut. At the taxpayers expense again.

And all the Instagram and baby Archie nonsense is just cringe

You can be as outraged as you like, I'm sure many millions are. But until we don't have a monarchy anymore it won't change.

Being outraged is way too much effort for something I can't change.

BrexitBingoGenerator · 25/06/2019 11:12

The thing is, it will have come from the queens cash- she dispenses it from the civil list, I think. So actually, it’s not as if it was cash ripped from the nhs or the food banks, it was always the queens to possess and allocate as she saw fit.

So your argument is with the queen. But yeah, the optics aren’t great.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 25/06/2019 11:13

YABU to state this as fact when it’s purely your opinion. But yes, the costs are ridiculous.

MyOpinionIsValid · 25/06/2019 11:13

The Queen is entitled to spend her money how she sees fit.

And before anyone has the usual uninformed melt down about 'our money/our taxes' the Queen puts ALL her income into the pot and get s 15% back in the form of the Soverign Grant. Yup, she pays 85% tax.

Out of that 15% or 34 million she gets back not to be sniffed at of course, she has to fund everything, from Teresa May inviting Trump for dinner, the the gardners pension contributions, the cooks maternity leave and the cleaners sick pay. It doesnt actually leave a lot of personal spare change.

Frogmore is part of Windsor, which is part of The Royal Palace Estates which is actually state owned. I think its pretty nice of her to do up a council house out of her own pocket.

The Sussexes (and Cambridges) are paid for by the Duchy of Cornwall Estate, a voluntary taxation rate of 45%

IsabellaLinton · 25/06/2019 11:13

@EdtheBear

I’m well aware of the scale of the work, and that they paid for fittings (how good of them!) but that’s by the by. The tax payer shouldn’t be paying for it.

Passthecherrycoke · 25/06/2019 11:13

I’m not even sure it’s right. How would a newspaper know how much their renovations cost? They’re hardly going to do a press release

UserUndone · 25/06/2019 11:13

I'm annoyed over this. There are millions of 1959's born women forced to work until almost age 66 before they get their pension who were never warned that the government had moved the goal posts!

They have been robbed of thousands of pounds that they earned and paid tax on and also their employers contributions have been kept from them.

Of course, there are other people in need so,no, I don't agree with this at all.

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 25/06/2019 11:13

@BrexitBingoGenerator yes it was the crown estate technically

But still a galling sum

rainydays77 · 25/06/2019 11:15

We need a referendum on the monarchy. How can they spend so much tax payers money on renovating their house when so many in this country don't even have a home. So many are struggling to pay their rent every month. I don't think even the most hardened of royal supporters can defend this abuse of public money.

Starrynights86 · 25/06/2019 11:16

They haven’t spent anywhere near as much as William and Kate on their Kensington Palace apartment and country home. At least Harry and Meghan had to convert the house back from flats, William and Kate ripped out and replaced a perfectly lovely kitchen at their country house!!

Myfanwyprice · 25/06/2019 11:16

I’m sure I heard on tv today, that the royal family cost £1.20 per tax payer a year, I really don’t begrudge that.

AryaStarkWolf · 25/06/2019 11:16

Ok stupid question here ( I apologise but I'm not British) how do they get that money as a Royal? Do they get a "wage" of sorts or do they just spend and send it to the tax office as expenses or how does it work?

Theknacktoflying · 25/06/2019 11:16

But it was on structural stuff, and wasn’t exactly stealing from the poor ....
Look at your tax return .... it will tell you where the money you paid in taxes was spent . My understanding is that most tax claimed through PAYE doesn’t even cover welfare ...

Alarmist shit ...

CaptainButtock · 25/06/2019 11:17

EdtheBear
"It's money that probably needed spent and helps keep the construction industry going. And provided some work for people."

Yes, I agree with the above. However you have missed the point.
The point being...Why was it OUR money that was spent on it, and not theirs?
(They're worth an estimated £25 million)

Disfordarkchocolate · 25/06/2019 11:17

Is this house actually owned by Meghan and Harry or is it still owned the Queen/Crown Estate. I think it's much more likely its not owned by Meghan and Harry personally and that the work done has added to its value.
