How are people not more outraged? And no, tourists do not visit the UK specifically because of the royal family.

"This year, 320,000 people were recorded as homeless in Britain"

Given that Will and Kate have got the biggest apartment at KP and a huge estate in Norfolk, Meg and Harrys little cottage renovation is probably a drop in the ocean in comparison.

I think two heirs to the throne (William and whatever their first born is called) is more worthy than someone who'll never be king with a sleb wife.

Theknacktoflying · 25/06/2019 12:14

I think waters are being muddied here:

a) Monarchists v Republicans
b) How the royals are funded
c) ‘Level’ of monarchy

Bringing H and M in to it (headline wise) is just crass and makes it another Megan bashing thread ...

Bandara · 25/06/2019 12:16

@adaline the Royal family only exists because of us. Due to a current collective agreement in England that we will let them be there. It is very important that we have discussions on this area. Just because they have been there for a long time does not mean that it benefits the country now. In fact in my opinion it is draining the country. Change is always important. But what is most important is open discussion on change

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 25/06/2019 12:16

Clearly an attack on Megan - saint Kate obviously still stretching her 2weeks wages from Jigsaw to fund her lifestyle

Hithere12 · 25/06/2019 12:17

YANBU. He is SIXTH in line. He is no longer the spare. Their role will become smaller and smaller as George gets older. It is a piss take.

PuppyMonkey · 25/06/2019 12:20

@adaline

Who says I don’t already donate to charity?

I still reserve the right to say I don’t want this particular £1.24 going to the royal family. And I will “whinge” about it as much as I like.

adaline · 25/06/2019 12:20

@Bandara I don't even particularly agree with the existence of a Royal Family.

But focusing on this is just another way to bash them. It's a headline - "HARRY AND MEGHAN STOLE YOUR MONEY". It's designed to get people riled up - not to change anything.

Bandara · 25/06/2019 12:21

@adaline you say that the money came out of a specific fund to maintain houses. They only allocated 2.5 million of this fund to do up Frogmore cottage after Meghan and Harry decided to move into there. Which gives rise to the question: why did Meghan and Harry not buy a smaller house out of their own money, like every other human being in England

adaline · 25/06/2019 12:21

My point is that whinging about it isn't actually going to change anything. Daily Fail headlines saying things like "Harry and Meghan spent 2.4 million of your money!" are designed to rile you up. They're not designed to actually foster any kind of change to the system, which is what actually needs to happen.

crazyasafox · 25/06/2019 12:21

@NameChangeNugget

I long for the day when the family are abolished and our head of state is Jeremy Corbyn. Grin

God help us ALL if this happens.

I would rather have Gemma Collins as PM that the ghastly Corbyn, for sooooooooooo many reasons. I think you know what they are!

Corbyn is a hideous man.

Theknacktoflying · 25/06/2019 12:22

and let’s not forget how Buckleberry Mansion was bought from the proceeds of an online party goods store ...

Poloshot · 25/06/2019 12:22

Excellent value for money IMO.

Bandara · 25/06/2019 12:23

@adaline I am glad that you agree. Seeing the obsecenely wealthy in England, alongside such poverty lately is really annoying me. There is no need for it. The Royal family should be held more accountable to buy their own things.

adaline · 25/06/2019 12:24

I assume the Royals have to live in certain places, don't they? I don't think Harry could just swan off and decide to buy a house in Devon and that be the end of t.

Stopandlook · 25/06/2019 12:24

What evs. This is what the ‘royal family’ do and will continue to do until the UK understands equality. I just ignore it.

PuppyMonkey · 25/06/2019 12:26

@adaline - oh right I agree then. Get rid of all of them immediately now. I fully support this, where’s my referendum?

SoupDragon · 25/06/2019 12:26

why did Meghan and Harry not buy a smaller house out of their own money, like every other human being in England

I imagine Frogmore is already covered by Windsor's security.

Bandara · 25/06/2019 12:30

@soupdragon weren't they already living in a smaller reasonable place, and demanded a bigger place

Hithere12 · 25/06/2019 12:30

To everyone saying “we only pay 8p a year” or whatever that does not include security which is a giant cost!! More than house renovations.

We spend millions guarding this fake puppet show royal family. They have no real power! Why are we guarding them? Oh no if they die the Kingdom won’t survive, what will happen to the Empire? Who will declare a War? They aren’t going to do anything. They are decorations.

They should have no power but what’s the point? All they do is meet and greets.

The Germans/Austrians/Russians/French had the right idea dissolving their monarchies once they became irrelevant. Did those countries suffer any ill effects? Do people not visit France anymore because there’s no King?

adaline · 25/06/2019 12:33

To everyone saying “we only pay 8p a year” or whatever that does not include security which is a giant cost!! More than house renovations.

Sure, but that's not going to change by newspapers publishing headlines claiming Harry and Meghan spent our hard-earned money to fund their new home.

As I've said those headlines are designed to rile people up and to get them to see Harry and Meghan (or whichever Royals we're supposed to hate this week) as the bad guys.

The entire system needs an overhaul and that won't happen while people are focused on things like this.

firstimemamma · 25/06/2019 12:35

What with the eye-watering sum spent on their wedding this hardly comes as a surprise.

Bandara · 25/06/2019 12:35

I remember people in Spain talking to me about their last King. That it reached booling point. When the country was in a very deep recession, and people were struggling in poverty, the King was off on a luxury holiday shooting endangered animals with his younger mistress. There was such public unrest that he had to abdicate

SharonBotts · 25/06/2019 12:36

I hate when people say this! Do you have any idea how much money that actually is?

Seniorschoolmum · 25/06/2019 12:36

Think of it from the logistics point of view.

For at least the initial period, they have a limited choice of potential homes, ie buildings within the existing royal estate that have room for a home with full security contingent, police logistics, and Harry’s private secretary, and staff. There has already been a credible terrorist threat against Harry.

That gives a choice of an apartment in Kensington Palace, or somewhere on the Windsor, Sandringham or Highgrove estates.

Or they buy somewhere from scratch, costing a lot more.

QueenieMum · 25/06/2019 12:36

I disagree with any publicly funded renovations on royal residences the public will never be allowed access to. William, Kate, Harry and Meghan are all independently wealthy and can cut their cloth according to their means as we all have to do. This is nothing to do with annual income.

I'm much more interested in where H&M have been living. You wouldn't move into a house whilst heavily pregnant unless it was completely refurbished and ideally free of paint fumes, etc too. You certainly wouldn't live in such a place with a newborn either. So are they still at KP? Windsor? What about the ambulance seen near Frogmore around Meghan's due date, did they borrow it from the set of Casualty?

Before anyone wades in, this is my opinion based on what I've read in the press over the last few months. Nothing more than that.
