How are people not more outraged? And no, tourists do not visit the UK specifically because of the royal family.

"This year, 320,000 people were recorded as homeless in Britain"

It's not actually their house at all is it? They don't own it.

adaline · 25/06/2019 12:02

No Adaline, Bill Gates at least made his money. These people? Where did they get it from.

The money that was spent on Harry and Meghan's house came from the Sovereign Grant.

"The Sovereign Grant is the funding provided to support the official duties of The Queen and maintain the Occupied Royal Palaces. It also includes a dedicated amount to fund the ten-year Reservicing of Buckingham Palace.

The total amount (£80million plus) comes out at £1.24 per person, per year.

The money is in a set pot, dedicated to the upkeep of the Royal palaces. It has nothing to do with the money that is spent (or isn't spent) on benefits or helping people out of poverty.

PuppyMonkey · 25/06/2019 12:02

They’re all as bad as each other, and that includes the Queen. How these parasites can go on visits to charities etc which are desperately in need of cash to help vulnerable people and good causes and not feel a shred of guilt - it’s beyond comprehension.

I don’t care if the queen does only cost 20p a day or whatever the silly figure is. I want my 20p to go to something else.

As if tourists only come to Britain with the hope they’ll see one of the royals.Hmm

liningtheque · 25/06/2019 12:02

not another oneHmm

adaline · 25/06/2019 12:03

Why don't they pay for it themselves?

It's not their house! It's owned by the Crown.

PuppyMonkey · 25/06/2019 12:03

Oh right it’s £1.24 is it. Okay, I decree my £1.24 is now to go somewhere else.

Bandara · 25/06/2019 12:05

I agree. I really hate the greed of the Royal family lately. How can you live like that - give yourself so much obscene wealth , while other people suffer. Things can change.

TheBigBallOfOil · 25/06/2019 12:05

I think the traction this story is getting, like the one about the duke of e totalling that car, shows the tide is turning. The queen is sacrosanct, pretty much. Once she’s gone, it all falls down.
Jolly good

thedevondumpling · 25/06/2019 12:05

Given that Will and Kate have got the biggest apartment at KP and a huge estate in Norfolk, Meg and Harrys little cottage renovation is probably a drop in the ocean in comparison.

The BBC said it is five houses that have been converted into one house for them so hardly a little cottage.

VladmirsPoutine · 25/06/2019 12:06

@adaline I count at least two posters who've completely missed the point of your post r.e. Bill Gates Grin

Bandara · 25/06/2019 12:06

@adaline it doesnt matter to me if it is owned by the crown. If they demanded to move in there and it wasnt good enough for them as it was, and they demanded a 2.5 million redurbishment , they should have paid for it themselves

ArtyFish · 25/06/2019 12:06

The Palace have defended the cost by saying "well.... It hasn't got a yoga studio..."

Def taking the piss. Get his dad to pay for it from the money he makes from his expensive free range organic cornish bee-jizz.

adaline · 25/06/2019 12:06

@PuppyMonkey

Nothing stopping you donating £1.24 a year to charity, or to food banks, and encouraging others to do the same.

Wouldn't your anger/energy be better spent actually doing something that will make a difference. Presuming it's something you feel strongly about, of course, and you're not just whinging for no real reason.

Nuckyscarnation · 25/06/2019 12:07

@Bandara they can live like that because they don’t give a flying shit about anyone not of their social class and rank.

We are just serfs. I can’t believe this is still prevailing in the year 2019!Angry

thedevondumpling · 25/06/2019 12:07

The total amount (£80million plus) comes out at £1.24 per person, per year. If everyone paid it but of course some people pay alot more and some alot less, that's how tax goes.

CruellaFeinberg · 25/06/2019 12:07

it was 5 houses and part of the cost is to convert into 1 (from the bbc news this morning) didn't hear that they cannot live there though

bloody ridiculous

  • I don't think we need a royal family
Bandara · 25/06/2019 12:09

@Nuckyscarnation I know. I think that people will start to wake up and realise that one family - the exact same as you and me - is taking alot of money from this country. Many other countries do not have Royal families. A royal family is a completely outdated idea

Arnoldthecat · 25/06/2019 12:10

But the legal position on Frogmore palace is that Harry and Meghan do not own it. It is owned by the crown estates and therefore any costs in its maintenance and upkeep fall to the crown estates as they would to any landlord. H and M are merely tenants of the crown estate.

The civil list was replaced some years ago by what they call the Sovereign grant under the act of the same name in 2011. This was to do a neat conjuring trick of paying them more whilst hiding the act by ensuring that it is not a closely scrutinised as the civil list was.

adaline · 25/06/2019 12:10

it doesnt matter to me if it is owned by the crown.

I don't think the crown particularly cares whether it matters to you or not, tbh Grin

They get a certain amount of money per year to spend on the palaces upkeep and refurbishments, and this year, 1.92 percent of the grant happened to be spent on Harry and Meghan's house.

If that money wasn't spent on them, it wasn't going to suddenly be spent on lifting Joe Bloggs out of poverty. It's a separate fund. It would have presumably been spent on another palace or been carried over into following year and spent on something else that the Crown owns.

Kazzyhoward · 25/06/2019 12:10

I'm annoyed over this. There are millions of 1959's born women forced to work until almost age 66 before they get their pension who were never warned that the government had moved the goal posts!

So you think it'll make a jot of difference if 2.4 million pensioners are given a one off payment of a pound? Do the sums, it's trivial and would cost more in bank charges and admin.

adaline · 25/06/2019 12:11

If everyone paid it but of course some people pay alot more and some alot less, that's how tax goes.

The majority of people in the UK take far more out of the system than they put in. Quibbling over £1.24 seems a bit silly to me when they don't even pay for what they use over the course of a lifetime.

NeckPainChairSearch · 25/06/2019 12:12

I don't think we should have a royal family at all, but singling out Meghan and Harry is the usual route to inviting the usual hideous comments.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 25/06/2019 12:12

They've chosen to champion environmental causes, Harry jets halfway across the world to speak about it and then gets straight back on a plane home. They've chosen women's charity, yet Meghan has a maternity wardrobe worth the same as my house! They either need to dial it down a notch or get a better PR team.

^^This.

NameChangeNugget · 25/06/2019 12:13

I long for the day when the family are abolished and our head of state is Jeremy Corbyn Grin

Thesearmsofmine · 25/06/2019 12:14

It is obscene really. Why couldn’t they use their own personal money to create this huge mansion (5 homes converted into 1!) for themselves or buy one elsewhere? Why do they need such a huge home? I mean I don’t expect them to live in a backtoback house in Leeds but would a 5 bed home in Berkshire not be sufficient?

I feel the same about all of them but Harry and Meghan are the ones in the firing line at the moment.
