I really really really love the name, we were actually hoping for a boy so we could uae this. We won't be able to have any more children after this and have just found out are having a girl.
WIBU to call her Alfreda and use the nickname Alfie?

OP posts:

You could just use “Elfie”, which is a legitimate female name.

AwkwardPaws27 · 20/06/2019 17:52

Althea?

Rowennaravenclaw · 20/06/2019 17:53

Initial reaction: No way
Read the bit about her real name being Alfreda: Okay that’s better.

SavageBeauty73 · 20/06/2019 17:53

I wouldn't. It's a popular boys name.

LilouBlue · 20/06/2019 17:53

I'm saying YABU for a niche reason. There's a very VERY pornographic webcomic with a female Alfie as the man character.

Unlikely that most people will have heard of it, but I wouldn't want even one person making that association with my daughter!

And before anyone says it I wouldn't say the same for a name like Jenna, because that's an established girls name.

Hairyheadphones · 20/06/2019 17:54

Do you actually like the name Alfreda or are you only using it so you can use Alfie?

How about Effie?

ArgusFilchsCat · 20/06/2019 17:55

Setting the child up for years of being thought of as unwanted. You wanted a boy and pick a boys name for her? Nope. Give her a name she can call her own and don't make her feel like a poor substitution.

EssentialHummus · 20/06/2019 17:55

No. Alfreda isn’t a nice name.

Stressedout10 · 20/06/2019 17:55

Sorry but that would be really cruel, think of the teasing she'd get at school and it also tells her that she not what you wanted

BlueMerchant · 20/06/2019 17:56

Yes. I don't think it's a nice name for a girl. I don't think she will thank you. My DD wouldn't.

deadbeatdead · 20/06/2019 17:56

Don't do it, she will have a lifetime of teasing at school, 'oh you're female' as she grows up, letters addressed to Mr whatever.

Why do that when you can pick from so many other names.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/06/2019 17:56

I much prefer Elfie. Or what about Aoife (Ee Fa)?

Breakaplate · 20/06/2019 17:57

Don't know about the porno! But love Alfie for a girl just Alfie, but then I also love Freddie, Frankie, Jaime and most of all Noa. A celeb called their girl James, quite like that too.

Bezalelle · 20/06/2019 17:57

I like it! I taught a female Alfie - she was 19.

SlimGin · 20/06/2019 17:59

I don't think it's too bad either. I do like boy names for girls, and Alfie is an effeminate name. Alphie? Althea? Hmm.

Mrsemcgregor · 20/06/2019 17:59

I think it’s your baby, your choice. It’s cute. I know a little girl called Frankie, she suits her name and no one teases her.

Asta19 · 20/06/2019 17:59

Sorry, I don't like it either. But then I'm not keen on the currently popular names like Alfie, Archie, Ruby etc etc. There are literally millions of names out there. Surely you can find one for a girl that you like too?

TheGoogleMum · 20/06/2019 18:00

I don't like it tbh and alfreda isn't a very nice name.

amusedbush · 20/06/2019 18:00

Alfreda is a bloody awful name. It sounds like alfredo, the sauce.

It comes across like you're giving her a horrible full name just to use a cutesy nickname.

SkydivingKittyCat · 20/06/2019 18:01

Alpha?

codemonkey · 20/06/2019 18:02

Go for it. Cute. I know girls called Freddie.

Nanny0gg · 20/06/2019 18:05

So you don't think you might be making life a teensy bit difficult for her?

No?

Whyrmengreattiltheygottabgreat · 20/06/2019 18:05

Don’t particularly like Alfreda, but quite like Alfie for a girl! I went to uni with a girl called Henry, and nobody batted an eye after the initial “ooh!”. Actually I always thought it was deeply cool.

icecreamsundae32 · 20/06/2019 18:06

Nope it's not a nice name for a girl, I can understand Bobbi, Billie and Frankie for a girl but not Alfie. Call a dog/pet Alfie instead.

florentina1 · 20/06/2019 18:07

I would go for Alphene and then you can shorten it to Alfie
