I really really really love the name, we were actually hoping for a boy so we could uae this. We won't be able to have any more children after this and have just found out are having a girl.
WIBU to call her Alfreda and use the nickname Alfie?

Horrible name for a girl

Neolara · 20/06/2019 19:55

Alfie is a terrible name for a girl.

Hedgehogblues · 20/06/2019 19:58

I like it. I would

SilkySula · 20/06/2019 19:59

Don't do it. You'll regret it. So will your daughter!

serenoa · 20/06/2019 20:01

Spell it with an 'i' instead of an 'e' and if people ask, tell them she's named for your beloved Swedish grandmother.

happybunny007 · 20/06/2019 20:02

No, you’re being mean.

IHateUncleJamie · 20/06/2019 20:03

Alfreda is only an acceptable woman's name if you're an Anglo-Saxon living in the 7th century AD.

Seriously, why would you pick a cumbersome and frankly absurd name just so's you can use the (boys') nickname of your choice that has a very tenuous link with the longer name?

^^This. Seriously. Give the poor child a girl’s name and get a dog called Alfie.

And “James” for a girl? No. It’s stupid enough for celebs to give their children whacky names.

Namestheyareachangin · 20/06/2019 20:04

Alfreda is unusual and I don't like it (don't like a lot of feminised boy's names mind, they just scream "oops we wanted a boy" to me - Georgina, Henrietta, Alberta, Fredericka etc). On the other hand most all of those have cute feminine or unisex nicknames or abbreviations.. Alfie is just categorically a boy's name, no getting round it. And kids will call her 'Alf', which just sounds like an old man's name tbh. And yes you will get endless grief from friends, family, strangers, the works.

On the other hand, there's LOADS she can change it to when she gets older if she doesn't like it - Ally, Freddie, Freda etc. So it depends how you'd feel if she insisted on that at age 5/15. Would you be offended if she rejects the nickname later in life?

I'd go with something similar but feminine - Aphra is lovely (on my top ten list actually) and you could call her Affie for short.

ollo · 20/06/2019 20:04

Alfreda (Alfredo) is a hideous name - I like someone's suggestion of Alfiera, which is much nicer and can easily be shortened into Alfie or Fiera/Fi/Thea (if they want to be called that)

gromberry · 20/06/2019 20:05

Alfreda makes me think of chicken Alfredo. Ps of course you shouldnt call your female child Alfie! What about Elizabeth (Effie)

OrdinarySnowflake · 20/06/2019 20:07

If you just loved the idea of a girl called Alfie, then fine. However, what you want is a boy called Alfie.

It smacks of disappointment, and while you might adore your daughter, she might well not see it that way. (Particularly if other family members let it slip you hoped for a boy)

Agree with others, let go of the idea of a son called Alfie, then pick a name that's for her. (get a dog called Alfie. )

Cracklycaramel · 20/06/2019 20:08

I worked with a female Alfie. Was unusual at first but quickly just became her name like George, Sam and Harry. (Also all female)

Sparkletastic · 20/06/2019 20:12

Fucking awful name and way to tell your daughter that she was a disappointment.

Beautiful3 · 20/06/2019 20:17

She's going to think you wanted a boy instead. No please don't do it.

NaviSprite · 20/06/2019 20:18

Alfie can be a girls name too and I think it’s cute :D

Sleepdeprivationistorture · 20/06/2019 20:21

Have you though about Allie? I couldn’t call a girl Alfie but I think Allie is a really pretty girls name.

user1497997754 · 20/06/2019 20:22

I love it .....what's it all about Alfie.....it's unusual I would like to be called it instead of boring Susan....go for it xxx

PuppyMonkey · 20/06/2019 20:25

It’s a yes from me.

mollymoo19 · 20/06/2019 20:26

I think it a very popular boys name so I don’t know.

Littleheart5 · 20/06/2019 20:27

Oh yikes I think it’s awful for a girl!
And even worse when you tell her you were hoping for a boy Confused

SleepAllDay7 · 20/06/2019 20:31

I quite like it. Definitely prefer it to some of the alternatives being suggested.

Ellmau · 20/06/2019 20:32

Alvina (Alvie for short) might work better than Alfreda/Alfie.

Or any Al* name and Allie for short.

carly2803 · 20/06/2019 20:33

please dont!!

xELENx · 20/06/2019 20:33

My female cat is called Alfie and I love it! X

Peterpiperpickedwrong · 20/06/2019 20:34

Mum, why did you name me Alfie?
we were actually hoping for a boy

Poor girl.pp has it exactly
Setting the child up for years of being thought of as unwanted. You wanted a boy and pick a boys name for her? Nope. Give her a name she can call her own and don't make her feel like a poor substitution
