I really really really love the name, we were actually hoping for a boy so we could uae this. We won't be able to have any more children after this and have just found out are having a girl.
WIBU to call her Alfreda and use the nickname Alfie?

I love Alfreda (it's so lovely when said correctly!) I have a very common Italian name (I'm not Italian)...however not very common in UK, can never find a flipping keyring or anything with it! My name is shortened by my partner and those close to me. I'm named after my father and my son is named after me...our shortened name is all the same, which is a lovely hand-me-down...it's shortened form is masculine... however...who cares! It's my pet name! I love my given name and adore my pet name. I use my given name in business and as I said, close friends and family use my pet name, so I have serious side and crazy side.
I say go for it! I'd say your choice is more normal than most ppl...took me ages to get around half the children's names in my DCs class.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 20/06/2019 19:30

Alfreda was my grandmother's sister's name - she was called Free! It is not a nice name and nor is Alfie for a girl.

Pinkyyy · 20/06/2019 19:31

Bloody hell. Is it going to end with a name? Why don't you just dress her up like a boy too and when she asks questions, tell her it's her fault for being the wrong gender.

KeepCoolCalmAndCollected · 20/06/2019 19:32

Just sprung to my mind - my BIL desperately wanted a boy and had a girl, and bought her toys like tool sets and workmates etc. It was so obvious that he really wanted a boy.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 20/06/2019 19:32

"Alfreda is sometimes shortened to 'Alfie', the OP isn't trail-blazing here."

how many alfredas do you know to make that generalisation? Her mates will call her freda/freddie, bet you any money.

No different to Frankie, Charlie

Frankie is short for Francesca, Charlie for Charlotte, both beautiful names. Alfreda, not so much. Jamie also falls into try hard category, for a girl IMO

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 20/06/2019 19:34

I worked with a woman who was called Jamesina! She was always called Jamie! Another awful name.

MrsGrindah · 20/06/2019 19:35

I never understand why people give their child a long name so they can shorten it to the name they really want.

bridgetreilly · 20/06/2019 19:35

Call her Aethelflaed and I'll let you have Alfie, otherwise no.

ArtichokeAardvark · 20/06/2019 19:36

Speaking as someone whose name gets shortened to a boys name, don't do it. It's a pain, no matter how much you love the full name.

bridgetreilly · 20/06/2019 19:37

Squigglypig

Winifred nn Fred is surely due a comeback soon.

tolerable · 20/06/2019 19:37

its your baby.call her whatever you choose.I like alfie.not so keen on alfreda,id find that more unforgiveable tbh.

Scoobandlaurs · 20/06/2019 19:37

Semi professional sports lady locally is Althea but known universally as alfie

BrianniStew · 20/06/2019 19:37

@Notverycreative
I googled 'Alfreda Alfie' and found lots of results for women named Alfreda who were nicknamed Alfie.

I don't see how saying 'Alfreda is sometimes shortened to Alfie' is a generalization either. It's just a statement of fact.

Pinkyyy · 20/06/2019 19:38

This thread made me think of the Johnny Cash song, A Boy Named Sue. Great song.

OrchidFlakes · 20/06/2019 19:40

I used to work with an Alphea (said al-fee-ah) if that helps at all...? She was from Zimbabwe and was so joyful and full of life

PinkieTuscadero · 20/06/2019 19:42

I worked with a woman who was called Jamesina!

This was common in Scotland, to name a girl after her father and stick -ina on the end. Jamesina, Donaldina (!), Hughina (!! - I just see 'huge vagina').

Bloody ugly.

Mummyoflittledragon · 20/06/2019 19:42

You were hoping for a boy just for a name. #shallow

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 20/06/2019 19:43

I don’t mind it, you like it go for it, I wouldn’t lengthen it though, Alphie is cute. But be aware there are so many Alfie boys, it’s become very common.

hannah162 · 20/06/2019 19:43

“We were hoping for a boy.”

Hmm Hate this comment.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 20/06/2019 19:43

No sorry. We all have names we'd love to use, but. You can't just saddle your dd with a boys name.

BrianniStew · 20/06/2019 19:43

I somehow '@'d the wrong person, my above reply was to @Ihatemyseleffordoingthis

XingMing · 20/06/2019 19:46

I hate Lucinda as a girl's name, but have known female Lukes and Lucies, and I like both diminutives. I think, OP, that you need to give your daughter options to be a tomboy or a girl, as she (rather than you) grows older and defines herself. Aoife, Aphra and Althea are okay too.

neveradullmoment99 · 20/06/2019 19:48

Elfie ? Seriously? Elfie sounds like Elf. Awful.

Kittywampus · 20/06/2019 19:52

How about effie or elfie or Elphine?

GlomOfNit · 20/06/2019 19:53

Alfreda is only an acceptable woman's name if you're an Anglo-Saxon living in the 7th century AD.

Seriously, why would you pick a cumbersome and frankly absurd name just so's you can use the (boys') nickname of your choice that has a very tenuous link with the longer name?
