I really really really love the name, we were actually hoping for a boy so we could uae this. We won't be able to have any more children after this and have just found out are having a girl.
WIBU to call her Alfreda and use the nickname Alfie?

OP posts:

My name is a 'boys' name. I hate it. As a kid I was desperate to have a normal name, instead every teacher or new person i ever met always told me they assumed I was a boy until they saw me.

clpsmum · 20/06/2019 19:09

Could you give her a name beginning with A and middle names L & F and call her Alfie as. Nickname based on that?

BrianniStew · 20/06/2019 19:10

@Notverycreative
But the OP would be calling their child 'Alfreda', which is a girl's name. Isn't that exactly the same as all the examples you've given?

I'm fairly indifferent about the name tbh.

Hideous name, whoever it’s for. And it is a boys’ name.

If you have a son next, what will you call him if your daughter’s Alfie? Chloe? Olivia?

CloserIAm2Fine · 20/06/2019 19:14

Why would you want to advertise your gender disappointment every time you say her name?

Alfreda is not a great name, especially not if you only want it so you can shorten it to your favourite boys name.

Thrupennybrit · 20/06/2019 19:14

Elfine as a main name , (El feen)?

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 20/06/2019 19:14

OK, I’ll make this one a nicer post and suggest Althea as an alternative to Alfreda.

Bluetrews25 · 20/06/2019 19:15

Remember 80s singer Alison Moyet? Sometimes known as Alf.

SpiderPlant38 · 20/06/2019 19:16

I like Alfreda and also Aphra. Alfie could be the short form.

Call your daughter what you want but rejoice in the fact that she is who she is.

Queenoftheashes · 20/06/2019 19:17

Please. If words like mankind can include women I don’t see why Alfie can’t. It’s cool and plenty of girls rock a “boy’s” name eg George from the famous five. I can’t see why any boys name can’t be appropriated.

BottomliePotts · 20/06/2019 19:19

I love it

RezCowgirl · 20/06/2019 19:20

No different to Frankie, Charlie, Jamie. Don't bother with the Alfreda though.

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 20/06/2019 19:20

It is very try hard to choose that. You'll have to explain it all the time.
The natural shortening would probably be Freda/freddie. Frida could be nice? I love Aphra as someone upthread suggested.

user1494055864 · 20/06/2019 19:21

Why don't you get a dog and call it Alfie instead and maybe grow up

Jeschara · 20/06/2019 19:22

Sorry, I do not like it either.

BossAssBitch · 20/06/2019 19:23

Alfreda

Hideous Grin

PinkieTuscadero · 20/06/2019 19:23

'we were actually hoping for a boy so we could use this name'

Eeek. Way to broadcast your disappointment at having a daughter.

BrianniStew · 20/06/2019 19:24

Alfreda is sometimes shortened to 'Alfie', the OP isn't trail-blazing here.

neverendingflorist · 20/06/2019 19:26

I actually like it as a girls name a lot more than I do for a boy. If I had never heard of the name before I would automatically think it was a girls name due to the -ie.

3timeslucky · 20/06/2019 19:28

My dog is Alfie. He's male. I couldn't do it to my daughter. And even more so if I was fobbing off a name on her because I was hoping for a boy to use it on.

WellVersedInEtiquette · 20/06/2019 19:29

I knew a thomasina who was literally named that because they were set on having a boy. Her grandma would tell anyone how much she hated it and how they wanted a boy. I always wondered if it would have affected the girl growing up being told that.
Having said that it's totally up to you. Would you be happy with everyone calling her Alfreda upon first meeting and having to correct everyone constantly?
I love Elfie and know an Effia

KeepCoolCalmAndCollected · 20/06/2019 19:29

The poor girl's got to live with it - not you.

TheTitOfTheIceberg · 20/06/2019 19:30

No.

Pick a lovely girl's name for your gorgeous daughter.

Get a cat. Call it Alfie.

lazymare · 20/06/2019 19:30

Just no. It's like asking whether you'd like to be called John.
