tell me your first dance song at your wedding

So its my wedding next week and I’m still in a dilemma over which song to have for our first dance. The one we have chosen so far is an old song and not a typical ‘first dance’ song. I think only older people will really know it as its not a really well known song (although my mum did say it was one of her dads favourites). Now I’m wondering whether to change it to something more well-known.

So...tell me your first dance song and why you chose it. And did you regret it or have a similar dilemma to me i.e. a not typical song? (first world problem i know - this is light-hearted!)

Basically I want you to help me get all romantic and misty-eyed for my wedding!

Have I told you lately that I love you

cittigirl · 11/06/2019 08:06

We have all the time in the world - Louis Armstrong

Damntheman · 11/06/2019 08:09

Lost Gospel - Madrugada

Sforsh49 · 11/06/2019 10:34

Something I need - One Republic
We were on holiday in Mexico when we got engaged and it was one of the songs we listened to on the iPod when there. My mum has just been told her cancer was back and the words just resonated with us both "if we got nothing we got us" "you're like the net under the ledge" and the last words of the song "if I only live once I wanna live with you"

Also used Riptide - Vance Joy, Feel Again - One Republic and Tom Odell Grow Old with me during the ceremony

the acoustic version of "Into Your Arms" by the Lemonheads. Nice and romantic and, more importantly, only a minute and a half long! Wink

Racheyg · 11/06/2019 11:58

@motortroll I walk down the isle to billy idol white wedding too 😁

Drivemecrazy1974 · 11/06/2019 12:30

Goodnight Sweetheart by The Spaniels. It's a song from the 1950s but it was played on the night that we met in 1992! It's our wedding anniversary tomorrow and this thread has just reminded me to get it ready on Spotify for our regular anniversary dance around the living room!

Mermaidkisses · 11/06/2019 12:55

we had "true companion" Marc Cohn
I would have liked "white Wedding" Billy Idol

RoseLavenderBlue · 11/06/2019 13:23

Perfect Year by Dina Carroll.
Was a relief to hear my choice of music actually played in the night do due to the CD I lovingly put together for the ceremony wouldn’t play in the machine at the venue (though it played in the car, our house etc).

ChubbyMummy12 · 11/06/2019 13:27

Kiss me by Ed Sheeran

NotAgainKen · 11/06/2019 13:34

Love Song by The Cure - in an ideal world we'd have spent months rehearsing a beautiful foxtrot to Night and Day by Ella Fitzgerald... but we didn't.

MilfordFound · 11/06/2019 13:40

The theme tune to Jurassic Park Smile

WeeBean · 11/06/2019 14:02

@MilfordFound we played that during our ceremony!

Our first dance was Song for the Road by David Ford, the lyrics are beautiful.

It finishes with:
"I know someday this all will be over
And it's hard to say what most will I miss
Just give me one way to spend my last moments alive
And I choose this, I choose this, I choose this..."

It gives me chills every time I hear it.

MooseBreath · 11/06/2019 14:15

Truly, Madly, Deeply - Savage Garden
Neither of us particularly wanted it, but it was the only one that neither of us vetoed!

MrsGideon · 11/06/2019 14:58

We did a private first dance just with our photographer discreetly taking a few pics before leaving us to it.

We had Northern Wind by City & Colour (because it's our song Smile)

Coldilox · 11/06/2019 15:43

This Will Be by Natalie Cole

foreveranxious · 11/06/2019 16:22

Aerosmith - Don't wanna miss a thing.

Now have the chorus lyrics as a wall decal above our bed Smile

wineandcatsandlego · 11/06/2019 16:25

We had God Only Knows by the Beach Boys. I wanted Easy by the Commodores as it was always mine and DH's "dance around the kitchen when cooking" song, but he didn't think the lyrics were appropriate for a first dance Grin

WhenEnoughIsEnough · 11/06/2019 16:26

foreveranxious snap! Me and dh have polar opposite tastes in music and Aerosmith, I dont wanna miss a thing was the perfect compromise. The words are lovely aswellm

Skihound · 11/06/2019 16:45

Groovy kind of love - Phil Collins, would choose it again we thought it fit us

Blossom28 · 11/06/2019 16:51

We had Jack johnson better together. It was great, not too stiff and formal!

jumpingjack123 · 11/06/2019 17:01

Mine's outing so have name changed, but mine wasn't a typical first dance song but one we both love and enjoy singing (Midnight Train to Georgia by Gladys Knight).

We only played until the 2nd verse though, then remixed it into a mammoth 19 minute cheese-fest, starting with oops-upside-your-head then cotton eye joe, agadoo, macarena, time warp etc etc. Grin was brilliant, as we both hate being centre of attention and it got everyone up dancing and having fun. Was knackered at the end!!

DieCryHate · 11/06/2019 20:06

Lana Del Rey videogames. Summed up our early relationship very well. Nearly went for into my arms by Nick Cave.

Steamfan · 11/06/2019 20:08

Battleship Chains by the Georgia Satellites.

FireCrotch · 11/06/2019 20:33

These Arms Of Mine by Otis Redding
Immediately followed by Cry To Me by Solomon Burke.
