tell me your first dance song at your wedding

So its my wedding next week and I’m still in a dilemma over which song to have for our first dance. The one we have chosen so far is an old song and not a typical ‘first dance’ song. I think only older people will really know it as its not a really well known song (although my mum did say it was one of her dads favourites). Now I’m wondering whether to change it to something more well-known.

So...tell me your first dance song and why you chose it. And did you regret it or have a similar dilemma to me i.e. a not typical song? (first world problem i know - this is light-hearted!)

Basically I want you to help me get all romantic and misty-eyed for my wedding!

We had this I promise you by Ronan Keating. I'm not a fan not had this song ment anything to us but it was suggested on a forum just like this one when I was looking and once we played it knew it was the one for us.

Nichelette · 10/06/2019 23:36

We're another couple with the Arctic Monkeys Baby I'm yours cover!

Jade218 · 10/06/2019 23:36

Al Green let's stay together

Loved it since I was a kid and the soppy slow stuff didn't suit our personalities wanted something with a bit of a beat

nuggles · 10/06/2019 23:38

Sade - by your side

Lyrics just went with ‘us’ really

Second choice was you and me by lifehouse

Brokenfurnitureandroses · 10/06/2019 23:38

Annie’s Song by John Denver

crazypsychedelictrifle · 10/06/2019 23:51

I wanted Mint Car by The Cure but DH vetoed it Sad

Neither of us particularly like dancing -especially when everyone is staring so we went with Songbird by Oasis as it's really short!

I’m very recently married and my first dance was patience by guns n roses then after that was everything I do by Brian Adams. Don’t worry about how old the songs are as long as there what you want.

ToastMarketingBoard · 11/06/2019 00:00

We had "No Rain" by Blind Melon. We were, however, giving some serious thought to "Everything About You" by Ugly Kid Joe 😁

Asj0405 · 11/06/2019 00:35

Shania twain - your still the one

flyingspaghettimonster · 11/06/2019 03:51

Right here waiting, Richard marx. He had to go to America for 4 months without me soon after the wedding, so it felt meaningful at the time. Sonce our musical tastes were mostly Marilyn Manson's version of white wedding or german industrial at the time, we couldn't really just use a favourite song.

EleanorAbernathy · 11/06/2019 04:13

My husband and I have very different dancing styles - I like to dance and he really doesn't, so we went for one where we could just sway for a bit ! The words are perfect.

Specialkay1983 · 11/06/2019 04:38

Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol.

Just kissed my baby by The Meters

Crapplepie · 11/06/2019 04:58

Haven't RTFT, but any Scottish heritage? If so, a ceilidh is good fun, and the 1st dance is a grand march. Take a lot of pressure off, and you get photos of all your guests lined up, arms linked. Fortunately (for me, as I don't like all eyes on me) a ceilidh is pretty standard in Scottish weddings, so no 1st dance angst! Congratulations on your impending nuptials! WineCakeCakeFlowers

Scottish wedding for us too -so it was a Dashing White Sergeant!

insancerre · 11/06/2019 05:27

We had Marian by the sisters of mercy

motortroll · 11/06/2019 05:36

@ToastMarketingBoard omg I now need to renew my vows so we can have ugly kid joe!

I'd have loved to have done something crazy but if it involves more than swaying my dh never would have gone for it!

We debated green day "good riddance" to mark the move away from old lives (ex wife!!) to new but it was a bit too fast for him Hmm

motortroll · 11/06/2019 05:40

@flyingspaghettimonster

We had billy idols white wedding as we walked back down the aisle together.

In fact choosing the music was a massive deal to us and even though we had a dj we picked most of the music.

It's weird how things change though, we'd probably choose really different things now. Although we'd probably be a bit too metal for most of our guests!

Knackerednana · 11/06/2019 05:50

Really can't remember if we even had one but it was 44 years ago. My dd played From this moment on by Shania Twain but it was totally spoilt by her totally pissed new SIL and boyfriend hogging the very small dancefloor. Will never forgive her for that. She was the only blight on an otherwise perfect day

SummerPlace · 11/06/2019 05:54

I'm old. "For all we know" (followed by "We've only just begun" by The Carpenters.

mumonthehill · 11/06/2019 06:04

Martha’s harbour by all about eve. Still love it

BillThePony · 11/06/2019 06:10

Let your love walk in by Paloma Faith

kittlesticks · 11/06/2019 07:11

Harvest Moon by Neil Young. Just love him and I guess it's his most upbeat song about love. 'But now it's getting late, and the moon is climbing high, I wanna celebrate, see it dancing in your eyes, because I'm still in love with you, I wanna see you dance again.'
A few of our friends have gone on to become Neil fans after looking him up post wedding - I recommend him for songs about real life. We would also have loved 'into my arms' by Nick Cave but that's now become more of my song to my son.

kittlesticks · 11/06/2019 07:14

I should add that we got married 6 years ago even tho I know that song choice is a bit dated. Some things just never get old.
I also recommend (for an 'out there' choice) 'do you realise?' By the Flaming Lips. We had that for signing the register. It is just lovely.

thatgingergirl · 11/06/2019 07:46

May Each Day by Andy Williams.
