To wonder what planet Boris Johnson and the conservatives are on

Boris Johnson's big idea is to cut taxes for the wealthiest people in society. Jeremy Hunt is concerned about lowering the abortion limit. Matt Hancock had to literally be forced to comment on the scandal at Whorlton Hall. I have just watched the second panorama programme on care. We have a care crisis. We do not spend enough money on caring for elderly and disabled people. I honestly despair that anyone would consider voting for these idiots who have no understanding of normal life and the actual problems that people are facing.

cansu are you generalizing everything by age group? I'm very low down the 'feeding ecology' and I'm 57 - with 'factors' not necessarily speific to my age group that supress my earnings ability.

givemesteel · 10/06/2019 19:59

It's called fiscal drag. It's where governments don't raise tax thresholds in line with inflation so gradually more and more people get lumped into higher rate tax brackets.

Trust me, BJ is talking to a long-forgotten cohort who don't get much back from the state but are expected to work long hours, full time in stressful jobs and stump up tax for everyone else year after year without complaining.

Arct1cTern · 10/06/2019 19:59

And £50k simply isn’t rich. Countless households up and down the land who have a joint income of this certainly don’t feel rich. 2x 25k rich , 30 + 20k? Don’t think so. Think some are forgetting those earning over 50k to 80k would simply be charged the same amount of tax on money they earn over the threshold up to 80 as everybody else under 50k. They wouldn’t be given anything. It’s their money.

It’s the crap like “rich” spouted re the squeezed middle that frankly make me want to run a mile from labour.

Zipee · 10/06/2019 20:00

The irony of someone saying they will vote tory cause Labour are antisemitic is hilarious.

Do Labour share an alliance with antisemitic parties in the EU? Does their leader reference Stalin "citizens of nowhere", do the leaders of influential groups (and potential leaders) meet with those who back anti Jewish groups in the states who talk about blood and soil? Do they talk about cultural marxism? There are many more, at grass roots and counsellor level, but hey, lets attack labour.

Sorrry that and their other racist issues should make it impossible for you to vote Tory and shows that you are simply using it for political.expediency.

familycourtq · 10/06/2019 20:02

I see the voters as middle englanders from the shires. And over 45. A million miles away from what I know. I despair and just hope the next generation is more compassionate to each other and keep the tories out watch out your prejudices are showing. I am over 45, live in the shires and would benefit from Boris’ tax cuts - but I’d rather set fire to my own face than vote Tory.

Zipee · 10/06/2019 20:04

50 k puts you in the top 20 percent of earners.

You dont pay 40 percent tax on combined income either.

People on 50k and upwards do get things back from the state, cutting their taxes whilst telling others that there is no money for education or public sector pay rises is ridiculous.

Its also failed economics, trickle down doesnt work.

Arct1cTern · 10/06/2019 20:09

And why shouldn’t the parents of those on £60k get care from the state? They’ve contributed more but aside from that we’re all responsible for own care, it’s not our children’s responsibility. Why are non property owners more eligible for state care than home owners anyway? Confused

Burpsandrustles · 10/06/2019 20:10

I agree but it's something I absolutely do not trust labour with either and nor lib Dems.

Agree it's far far better to give tax break from bottom up.

100%. People eeking out living on less, that relatively small tax break means sooo much more too people on very little than those on much more!!

Arct1cTern · 10/06/2019 20:12

What do those in £50 k get from the state that they shouldn’t exactly? Why are they less deserving than somebody on £30K. They’ve paid more tax over the years, they’ve paid their NI why shouldn’t they get access to the NHS and care?Hmm

Zipee · 10/06/2019 20:13

Why should inheritance be state subsidised?

Burpsandrustles · 10/06/2019 20:13

Tony Blair. Utterly shat on the poor in the UK.

I fully believe the seed's for food banks were sown under his reign. They don't come from nowhere. Yes Tory cuts add and contribute. He and labour saw an increase in the gap between poor and rich. They failed the pledge after a long tenure to bridge that gap and they admitted it.

RosaWaiting · 10/06/2019 20:13

"expected to work long hours, full time in stressful jobs and stump up tax for everyone else year after year without complaining."

but many people are doing the same and often for a lot less pay. And often they are really vital workers, not the software engineer mentioned upthread (thank you for that example).

I just do not get this as a demographic that needs priority. I wonder if BJ is trying to target the people in this demographic who, like a pp, would rather set fire to their own face than vote Tory?

RosaWaiting · 10/06/2019 20:15

Burps "Tony Blair. Utterly shat on the poor in the UK."

yes. And also was very keen on property prices getting insane.

RosaWaiting · 10/06/2019 20:15

I've just realised putting "burps" in bold like that makes it look like I was burping before I posted!!!!!!!!

Zipee · 10/06/2019 20:16

Labour reduced child poverty and actually the level of inequality stabilised following enormous jumps in the 1980s.

The housing issue also began then too.

Who brought about these changes?

otterturk · 10/06/2019 20:17

Raising the threshold was in Labour's last manifesto

Arct1cTern · 10/06/2019 20:17

It’s not about subsidising inheritance. We should all get the same care if we’ve all paid into it.

Zipee · 10/06/2019 20:20

It is about subsidising inheritance, you don't want people who can afford to pay for care to do so, so they can pass on their houses or estates in inheritance.

Oh btw the vast majority of people die in net tax deficit, even higher rate payers. Not many people pay in enough for all they recieve. In fact very, very few do.

Zipee · 10/06/2019 20:21

Oh and taxation isnt a pay in get out system. Even if you had paid in enough to cover your care, you'd have to exclude everything else you'd benefited from in the preceding decades.

Arct1cTern · 10/06/2019 20:23

And why would nurses be using food banks? Starting is £24 and a senior can earn up to £72. Many will have partners and will be enjoying a household income of 50 or more.

Arct1cTern · 10/06/2019 20:26

Soooo all homeowners should use thrir homes for care. Non home who haven’t saved for a deposit, scrimped for a mortgage and upkeep just get the care even though homeowners will have paid the same and more tax. Sounds peachy. Don’t think I’ll be voting for that thanks.

ragged · 10/06/2019 20:29

NHS, highways, clean air, food regulations, court system, decent schools, NIHR, hygiene inspections in restaurants, fire fighters on stand by, insurance regulation, consumer safety, trading standards, Sport England =

"Zilch from the state" ? Confused

Zipee · 10/06/2019 20:29

Except there is evidence or nurses using foodbanks. Many may not have partners or pay for very expensive shift based child care.

Why do those over 50k need a tax cut.

Tske home pay is 50k is £3085.

Oh and fiscal drag only happens when people are getting inflationary pay rises, wage growtg has been under inflation fot a while.

Zipee · 10/06/2019 20:33

Yup homeowners should use their homes for care, otherwise your inheritance is state subsidised as well as being tax free.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 10/06/2019 20:39

I am over 45, live in the shires and would benefit from Boris’ tax cuts - but I’d rather set fire to my own face than vote Tory
