How many times kids taken to A and E

Hi I'm just curious. I wondered how common it is for kids to go to a and e and for what reason?

I've been speaking to a lot of mums today and it seems to happen a lot more than I thought.

OP posts:

Dd x2 temperatures/illnesses
Dsx 10 at least he had bronchiliis (sp?) a lot his first 2 years and split head once 😢😢

PotteringAlong · 06/06/2019 17:51

Never. 3 kids aged 7, 4 and 2.

TriciaH87 · 06/06/2019 17:51

There is no normal.

Sirzy · 06/06/2019 17:52

Ds is 9 and due to his chronic chest problems we are probably at 50 plus visits.

He has also had visits for post surgery complications

RedSkyLastNight · 06/06/2019 17:52

DD has been twice (seriously cut finger at age 1 and broken leg at age 3). DS has been once (broken arm at age 5).
When we were in hospital for 2 weeks with DD, there was a steady stream of children with broken limbs (it was summer holidays). The nurses said this is very normal in the summer holidays and they got a trampoline based accident most days.

Mummadeeze · 06/06/2019 17:53

DD 10 - only three times so far (touch wood). Once for a high fever (and she refused all medication), once for a v bad sickness bug and once she was recommended to get some urgent tests by the GP but turned out to be fine. Not common in our house, but appreciate we have been lucky.

TwoBlueFish · 06/06/2019 17:53

I have DS(16) & DS(14) and have been to A&E once for the kids.

JagerPlease · 06/06/2019 17:54

DS is not yet 3 and has been 5 times. A combination of breathing difficulties, splitting his head open and dropping a brick on his foot

Sosososotired · 06/06/2019 17:54

DC1 has been 3-4 times for asthma, 1 for a very suspicious rash, 1 for broken arm, and 3 for suspected breaks (sports related injuries!), 1 for appendicitis
DC2 never
DC3 once for head injury

I guess it depends if you have a child like my DC1 or whether you are fortunate to have one like DC2. No normal

Littletabbyocelot · 06/06/2019 17:54

Dt1 4 times, all related to a known condition that had certain symptoms which could be life threatening or nothing and we were told not to try and assess at home but go to A&E. DT2 4 times, including once from school. This was all before 5.

Babynut1 · 06/06/2019 17:55

DS never.
DD, about 4 times 🙄 Jammed fingers and ripped her nail off, fell down the stairs, climbed out of bed and fell awkwardly on her foot, DS pushed her and caused a small fracture to her elbow. She’s a nightmare 😂

Thatsnotmyotter · 06/06/2019 17:55

DS is 9 months and we’ve been once with bronchiolitis as we were sent in by the GP. They suctioned a whole load of gunk out of him and then he was fine. That’s pretty much the only time he’s been I’ll.

Jammysod · 06/06/2019 17:55

DS is 4...we've been x6 for breathing problems (now treated as suspected asthma), 1 bumped head & 1 allergic reaction.

Babynut1 · 06/06/2019 17:56

Forgot to add DD is 3 🤦🏻‍♀️

yellowgreenbluepurple · 06/06/2019 17:56

My brother lived there pretty much whilst I never went as a child.

Deadringer · 06/06/2019 17:56

In my small sample of 5 DC, once each for the eldest four. My eldest dd1 was pushed over in the playground age 4 and banged her head. Took her to A and E when she started vomiting and she was kept in overnight. Ds broke his elbow on his friends trampoline and they took him to A and E. Dd2 was x-rayed after falling awkwardly and hurting her foot. Dd3 broke her wrist on a playdate. Youngest is 10 and nothing so far. Oh actually twice for dd1, she was rushed to hospital abroad a few years ago and had her appendix out. Wow that sounds like a lot now I have written it down.

turkeyboots · 06/06/2019 17:56

DD has been 1 for a dislocated elbow.
DD has been over 20 times mainly as a baby for bronchiolitis, but a number of daft accident too.

CrohnicallyEarly · 06/06/2019 17:56

6 year old... maybe 2 or 3 times for illnesses (sent there by 111, turns out unnecessarily) and twice for injuries- knee she couldn’t weight bear on, nasty cut to head- and once for swallowing something she shouldn’t have. Plus she’s had a few visits to walk in/minor injuries.

2 year old has never been, and only ever been to see the doctors once! (Not counting routine checks and vaccinations)

caughtinanet · 06/06/2019 17:57

I agree with the poster who said there is no normal, there couldn't be, the clue is in the name. There's no normal amount of accidents or emergencies, some will never go, some will be there so often they have their own chair.

There are probably figures for a statistical number of visits per child per year if you need to quantify it.

mbosnz · 06/06/2019 17:58

DD 15 - three times- once with severe concussion, another time when
she fell out of a tree and hit her bonce and fitted, and one when she landed badly on the trampoline and did the same thing. I threatened at one point to glue a cycle helmet to her head.

DD 13 - once for a suspected fractured wrist, once when she sprained her ankle in a bad fall off a horse, and once when she swallowed $2.50.

wlv12 · 06/06/2019 17:58

DS1 once, when he shoved something up his nose at the age of two and we couldn’t get it out!

DS2 once, at a similar age to his brother - when he climbed up onto the table when my back was turned and fell head first off it - it may have been better if I hadn’t seen it. His neck seemed to bend right back, I thought he’d broken his neck. They kept us in a few hours as a precaution.

PinkHeartLovesCake · 06/06/2019 17:59

My 3 dc have never been ( oldest child is 3)

I myself have never been to A&E not even as a child, my sister has been quite a few times (dislocated shoulder, broken leg, car crash)

Not sure there is a normal on this really

randomsabreuse · 06/06/2019 17:59

Depends on the child. My older (mobile) one is light, balanced and reasonably cautious. Has had 1 accident book incident in a year at nursery and no A&E visits. Other kids are more prone to falling, have less fear or have looser joints (pulled elbows etc) so would have far more A&E visits with the same parental supervision and approach. Also no major allergies or illnesses.

DC2 managed Bronchiolitis aged 4 wks (referred in by gp), swollen lips/odd breathing type allergic incident (A&E) followed by being off feed and not peeing (referred in by gp) the next day at about 4 months and certainly seems less cautious - currently tries to roll up steps... suspect he will be a more frequent visitor to A&E!

Once they get older choice of sport may play a part - rugby/horse riding/skiing vs running and netball!

FrenchyQ · 06/06/2019 17:59

DD20 once with a suspected fractured wrist (she was about 3)
DS12 once when he fell over and ripped the inside of his lip and it wouldn't stop bleeding (he was about 18 months)

FrenchyQ · 06/06/2019 18:00

Actually DD20 twice.....overdose last year
