Hi I'm just curious. I wondered how common it is for kids to go to a and e and for what reason?

I've been speaking to a lot of mums today and it seems to happen a lot more than I thought.

Ds19- fractured arm x 2, suspected broken toe, head injury

Ds14- nail ripped off, split chin, head injury x2

Thesearmsofmine · 06/06/2019 19:35

It varies.

My eldest who is 8 has never been.

Ds2 who is 6 has been about 5 or 6 times(once a burn, other times due to breathing difficulties)

Ds3 who is 3 has been once(banged head).

Backwoodsgirl · 06/06/2019 19:36

Never, for any of us

Soubriquet · 06/06/2019 19:37

3 for dd

One at 13 months with bronchitis. Was admitted for 3 days and needed antibiotics, nebuliser and oxygen.

2nd was aged about 2. Fractured her leg on a trampoline

Was taken again a few months ago aged 6. Nothing serious.

DS, twice.

First at 9 weeks old when his dad fell over with him. Luckily ds was very bruised but ok

Second time was at 6 months when he stopped eating. Finally diagnosed with CMPA. Now aged 4 he’s fine

Amanduh · 06/06/2019 19:39

Ds is two. Four times. Three times by ambulance - found him almost unresponsive once (was low blood sugar) once with a sky high temperature and bad reaction and once with awful, struggling-to-breathe croup. The other one he was two months old and refusing to feed and going blue, and screaming in pain with a non blanching pinprick rash. We were kept in and it was a dairy allergy (he’s now grown out of it.)

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 06/06/2019 19:40

With four children, a total of two A&E visits. Both for the same child - once for an injury to his ear and once for a dislocated elbow. Both were before the age of 4. Nothing since, thankfully.

JustTwoMoreSecs · 06/06/2019 19:42

5 yo twins:
DS 4 times (bleeding birth mark at 1m, GP sent us to A&E, then 3x for croup)
DD once for a dislocated elbow

mrsm12 · 06/06/2019 19:43

Dc1 twice - 1 gp referral for possible heart issue and once for a broken leg
Dc2 once - suspected break
Dc3 never
Dc4 - gp referral of bronchioloitis

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 06/06/2019 19:43

DS1 twice once at one day old with a funny rash they turned out to be newborn acne but nobody had a fucking clue and second time with a bump to the head
dD2 three times for a blister on her eye ,- cut forehead at nursery and a very high temp and struggling to breathe normally
DS2 - five times under the age of 2😢 low blood sugars, swine flu, bronchiolitis, high temp and mottled skin and then a burst ear drum.

Bloody kids

Patchworksack · 06/06/2019 19:45

Ds1(12) bit through his tongue in a bike accident age 3, had ankle Xrayed after landing badly jumping off something age 6ish.
Ds2(9) not so far.
DD(5) 3 times in her first year - seizures twice and D&V whilst immunesuppressed. Not since (touch wood)

MaryPopppins · 06/06/2019 19:45

DD6 has been once. Broken arm.

cantfindname · 06/06/2019 19:45

Mine are grown up now but daughter practically had a season ticket! 2 x bike accidents, usually when she 'borrowed' her big sister's bike. 2 x horse riding accidents, one of which was a hairline skull fracture; Broken bone in right hand after falling upstairs at college.. I asked her how and, believe it or not, she demonstrated on the stairs at home and promptly broke the same bone in her left hand! Back to A & E! There were others that I have blanked..

Eldest son, who is the acknowledged risk taker as a climber, mountain biker and kayaker etc only ever went once with appendicitis.

Youngest son with a seed pod shoved up his nostril, sat for 5 hours until we were finally called and he sneezed and it flew out!

RandomUsernameHere · 06/06/2019 19:50

DS (5) - twice, once for pea up nose and once for fractured arm
DD (5) - never
Touch wood things stay that way!

Lavende · 06/06/2019 19:55

DS (11) dislocated elbow X 3, handle bar of bike through neck, hit in face with a cricket bat
DD 1 (9) - bronchiolitis x1, asthma x2
DD 2 (4) - asthma x 5, anaphylaxis x3.

Nodancingshoes · 06/06/2019 20:01

Mine have both been quite a few times... Ds1 had several convulsions as a baby/toddler so went by ambulance at least 3 times. Ds2 is very accident prone - cut his head open on the corner of the table, split his lip open jumping on the bed, broke his arm falling off monkey bars, you name it....

HelpIcantfindaname · 06/06/2019 20:02

DD34 3 times within a few weeks when she was 10 - fell off bike, cousin shut car boot on her head, strange dog bit her in street...I was expecting Social Services at door!
She also went age 11...sprained wrist doing PE at school, 12 bad fall during netball at school.
DD32 never
DS 30 never
DD10 suspected meningitis at 3 yrs. Broken arm when fell off garden swing, she had hardly started swinging...age 5 (last day of summer holidays)
And a few times over last 2 years with sprained wrist/ankle...she's a bit clumsy!

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 06/06/2019 20:03

Never, dd is 9

BumandChips · 06/06/2019 20:04

DS1, 4 times. Allergies sent in by GP, put something up his nose and we couldn’t get it out, banged head and started vomiting and a burn.

DS2 never.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 06/06/2019 20:05

Once. Minor choking incident as a baby, rang 111 and they don't risk anything where babies are concerned, told us to go immediately to A&E.

RiftGibbon · 06/06/2019 20:06

Three as far as I remember. Once sent there by OOH service with suspected meningitis (thankfully was chickenpox), once with a suspected broken foot, and once with a suspected broken leg.

skyremote · 06/06/2019 20:09

DS9month has been to A&E 4 times, once at 4 week for sickness, and 3 times at 7 month for breathing related problems. He's been out OOH GP around 6 times and been to the GP probably around 15 times!

Sounds a lot, I promise I do actually look after him!!

RosemarysBush · 06/06/2019 20:13

Never. Son and daughter both now adults. All down to individual circumstances I think.

bobstersmum · 06/06/2019 20:14

3 dc 2, 5, 6 and never yet (touching wood) although two of them have been to minor injuries once each one for a cut and one for a suspected arm injury which was a precaution and nothing was wrong.

foreveranxious · 06/06/2019 20:14

DS (now 10) was a regular at A&E for about 2 years when he was 4-6 years old. He was very susceptible to ear & chest infections & croup. Always used to happen on a weekend too!!! Paediatrician advice was to treat each infection aggressively with antibiotics. I did get strange looks from the A&E docs when I used to point out that my DS only responded to a particular antibiotic & not bother prescribing anything else! I swear they thought I had Munchausens GrinLost count of the amount of times my DS needed a nebuliser too!

At the time it felt never-ending but he started to get better once his tonsils were removed (gut instinct that these were the problem!) . Took me 18 months of fighting to get the ENT doc to agree to remove them. ENT doc insisted that tonsils play no role in occurrences of croup, called me a neurotic mother & only agreed to whip them out when 3 sleep studies showed my DS oxygen levels where below 82% most of the time!!!! Funnily enough the croup occurrences went down from every 2 weeks to twice a year almost immediately! Been a firm believer in mothers instinct every since!

Thankfully through all of this, our GP was amazing & so supportive, always fitting us in at the last minute.

Now DS hardly ever gets sick which I am so thankful for Smile

lessthanBeau · 06/06/2019 20:15

Dd10 never, touch wood.
Dd26 twice, dislocated elbow age 2 and split lip age 4
Ds29 twice, stick to eye causing split sclera, resulting in operation with overnight stay and 6 weeks recovery at home (very delicate stitches on eyeball) age 7, and broken wrist trampoline accident, age 14.
