How many times kids taken to A and E

Hi I'm just curious. I wondered how common it is for kids to go to a and e and for what reason?

I've been speaking to a lot of mums today and it seems to happen a lot more than I thought.

Oh I forgot another one for DS1 -severe hypothermia after being made to play Rugby in driving wind and snow in -15C temps.

Weepingwillows12 · 06/06/2019 18:51

Ds1 once for a finger trapped in a door. Went to minor injuries unit then told we should just go to a plastics specialist hospital a and E in case.

Ds2 twice as a little baby. Both times we were referred from the out of hours gp. Hospitalised for an infection first time. Debated keeping him in second time but let us go and come back next day for Checks.

Guess I am not a good judge of what's an ooh or minor injuries versus a and E incident.

loie · 06/06/2019 18:52

DS is 2 and has been twice.
Brought up once when he was approx 6 months as he'd fell off the bed and took a bang to the head (bad parenting!)
Once just before he turned 2 in an ambulance after a febrile convulsion as he'd had a chest infection.

cocomelon23 · 06/06/2019 18:53

Dis is 9. He's never been.

yearinyearout · 06/06/2019 18:57

Two adult dc...took one when he was a toddler after he banged his head, that's it. To be fair I think people use A&E far too often when some ice/painkiller/wait to see gp if necessary would be more appropriate. I've got friends who have taken their son to A&E at least a couple of times a year for his entire life for "suspected broken arm" "suspected meningitis" etc etc (he's now a teenager and surprise surprise, suffers with health anxiety)

EleanorReally · 06/06/2019 18:58

ds escaped a trip until year 7, got hit on the head with a stick, off to minor injuries to have his head glued.
dd2 aged 3 poured boiling water over her. off to a & e
dd3 aged 1, boiling water, aged 5, fingers in door hinge, aged 9, fell off playground equipment, eye injury.
think/hope that's it, now they are all adults

EleanorReally · 06/06/2019 18:59

oh and dd2, shut finger in door, aged 16, minor injury
and dd3 twisted ankle, aged 18

Sexnotgender · 06/06/2019 19:00

DD is 15 and over the years been to A&E approximately 20/25 times.

wonkylegs · 06/06/2019 19:02

I have an 11yo and a 3yo and we have only had one a&e trip and that was abroad on holiday (fell out of bed onto tiled floor, required stitches)

The youngest is clumsy as they come and with no sense of danger so that may not last.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 06/06/2019 19:02

Loads, 50+ times with Ds2 (asthmatic, allergy, and compromised immune system)

Ds1 - when he was about 3 weeks old he was struggling to breath (blue lips) because he had a boggy in his nose Blush we didn’t know about the boggy

He then has had a few admissions with acute D&V and once where he went into anaphylaxis due to a unknown penicillin allergy

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 06/06/2019 19:03

Oh and forgot when Ds1 broke his wrist

Sexnotgender · 06/06/2019 19:03

Sorry hit post too soon!

20/25 times altogether
Dislocated finger - we thought it was broken, horrendous angleEnvy
Suspected broken wrist
Infected surgical wound
Pneumonia x 10/15 with 10 admissions
Severe dehydration
Suspected snapped spinal rods

Actually it might be more than 25Confused

babysharkah · 06/06/2019 19:04

Too many to count in the early years for dts who used to get croup a lot and mostly need a trip to and e for the steroids. Since that cleared up, once for a broken arm.

Been to urgent care a fair few times for random falls and illnesses over bank holidays .

TheTrollFairy · 06/06/2019 19:05

3yo has been a few times to children’s hospital (is that the same thing) for croup

EleanorReally · 06/06/2019 19:05

and yet another one for dd3, about 11, stone in knee, minor injuries

teyem · 06/06/2019 19:05

Ds1 - never
Ds2 - three times, two x asthma, once x scratched eyeball (that was eye a&e, does that count?)
Ds3 - once, breathing trouble/ chest infection.

12, 10 & 5 years.

Becathourus · 06/06/2019 19:06

DD twice- first time she got into my draws and ate my contraceptive/acne tablets. Second time for a burn. A year and a half between both.

RomanyQueen · 06/06/2019 19:06

Ds1 - suspected meningitis 6 wks old, that was scary. Kept him in 2 weeks it turned out to be viral. Ten not again until adulthood.

Ds2 - a few times for sticking objects in ears, up nose and for really bad asthma quite a few times.

Dd, stomach problems, temperature thing, and unexplained bruising that with a bump to the head gained us yet another ss visit.
She went through a stage last year at 14 of accidentally self harming. falling upstairs, walking into doors, etc. She isn't clumsy anymore thank God.

EleanorReally · 06/06/2019 19:07

dd2 had cotton wool stuck up her nose aged 2, GP, wrongly thought it was a bogey, dh had had a nose operation i guess she was copying him, went to the ent ward for saline solution for dh nose, but "while I am here can you check", they got it out but I was told off for not going via the correct channels Blush

GardenersDelight · 06/06/2019 19:08

DDs 25and 26 only been once with the eldest. But I am a paediatric nurse and they had to be dying to get as far as the gp! Also never had a drs home visit 😀

Mumsymumphy · 06/06/2019 19:08

DS twice - once as a baby with a mystery virus, kept in overnight. Again when he was 10 with a broken ankle after thinking he could do parkour off the school climbing frame. He couldn't.

DD - once aged 5, with gastro bug, sickness and dehydration, kept in for observation, home the same day.

Oldest DD - never.

Lovelost01 · 06/06/2019 19:09

Not even 2 yet and already been 4 times! Once when he was a few months old and had a very very worrying rash, was only viral but looked like all the worst things! Then just before he was 1 he dislocated his elbow while playing. Just after 1 he ran head first into a metal pole at the park and had a black eye & deep cut. Then most recently he had a severe allergic reaction.

Feels like alot and I always feel judged there!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 06/06/2019 19:09

Twice in 10 years for accidents. Rarely been to the GPs. We've been pretty lucky injury and health wise.

YeOldeTrout · 06/06/2019 19:09

Usually I find MNers report a lot more than us.
Caveat is that we have an excellent MIU near us (private legacy to NHS). We've been to MIU more often than I can count.

Actual visits to A&E only 2 that I can recall (4 children): bead in nose & wheezing.

milkshak3 · 06/06/2019 19:10

we have been over the last 2 years with now 8 and 11 to:

  • 1x fall from height and hitting head
  • 2 x severe abdominal pain + fever (were admitted for tests as suspected appendicitis)
  • 1x getting tick removed over the weekend (DC has severe Asd + LDs - we couldn't get it out ourselves OOH docs refused to see DC due to ASD)
