How many times kids taken to A and E

Hi I'm just curious. I wondered how common it is for kids to go to a and e and for what reason?

I've been speaking to a lot of mums today and it seems to happen a lot more than I thought.

Ds1, now 17 x5. Suspected broken ankle, suspected broken wrist, 2x concussion and 1x swallowed a small screw in aerial off a mobile phone.
Ds2, now 7 x5. 1 x broken leg 1 x broken arm 1 x suspected broken arm 1 x allergic reaction 1x back of the head bump.
Ds 3 now 6 x ? Lost count. 1x head bump 1x drank calpol (despite safety lid) 1x ate tub of vicks 1x broke little finger 1x trapped penis in a toy train, 1 x God awful rash 1x bank holiday double ear infection, 1x strange absence seizures and countless ambulance trips due to horrific seizure syndrome after not recovering properly. Depends on the child really, theres not really an average ammount of times- just how it goes.

JaceLancs · 06/06/2019 23:27

DD broke her ankle aged 14 and I took her to A & E
We were all most amused as she came up on their computer system as babyJaceLancs as bar vaccinations she had never needed medical attention of any kind since leaving the maternity unit

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 06/06/2019 23:27

Dd.
1x smashed her face on the coffee table, so much blood. Glued.
2x for breathing asthma related drama
1x ridiculously high temperature.

1x fell down the stairs landed on toy lots of blood.. glued again

Ds
1x for breathing issues. (Shocked he’s not been more as he’s so bloody clumsy, lucky he seems to bounce Hmm)

Biffsboys · 06/06/2019 23:36

Ds1- twice , first time he cut his face with a razor 2nd he had an ulcer on his eye 😭
ds2 - 3 times , 1st blue lighted with croup , other 2 times football related injuries ( currently on crutches)

YerAWizardHarry · 06/06/2019 23:38

DS is 6.5 and been twice. Once he swallowed a coin, doctor reccomended an xray as he was complaining of a sore chest and once when he broke his collarbone at school.

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 06/06/2019 23:38

Had to take DD to A&E 3 times in 1.5 years for breaking the same wrist 3 times.

1st break she came off her quad bike.
2nd break fell backwards while wearing her wheelies
3rd break she fell while swinging from a tree branch.

YerAWizardHarry · 06/06/2019 23:40

I'm 26 and went for my first time last year after a 55mph car crash. I was totally fine but they had a full medic crash team waiting for me due to the way the ambulance had to report the incoming incident

SmarmyMrMime · 06/06/2019 23:44

DS1 (8) age 2, paving slab fell on his foot. Age 5, minor injuries sprained wrist/ suspected fracture following fall at school

DS2 (6) 3m for breathing difficulties. Later had bronchiolitis but was just ok to avoid A&E, later given inhalers for asthma symptoms.

For a pair of very active including one dyspraxic child, they've done OK!

Me, age 7 head injury resulting in mild concussion. Age 17, stitches to face during school sports trip abroad.

DCIRozHuntley · 06/06/2019 23:48

I have 4 DC. We've been to A&E twice. Once as DD1 swallowed my engagement ring (except she hadn't Blush ) and once DD3 had neonatal meningitis.

I went twice as a child, once with dehydration and once when I fell off my bike. My brothers also went once each.

GlamGiraffe · 06/06/2019 23:55

DS so accident prone A&E thought I was abusing him😫.

  • 6wks old breathing issue *huge split in head down to skull after falling between cast iron banister down an entire flight of spiral stairs to concrete floor below.
  • falling down stairs on bus knocked out.
  • running into railings in street knocking himself out
  • mountaineering up kitchen units and helping himself to an entire bottle of Calpol for his headache after I'd already given him some!
  • dislocating shoulder
  • suspected blood clot in leg *can remember quite a lot of other visits and at least another two requiring xrays and 2 more head bangs but cant remember the details as the were ages ago. He's 17 and has worryingly now taken up boxing!!!!😬😱

DD
Once only. Stopped breathing at 9weeks old.

ToastMarketingBoard · 07/06/2019 00:15

DS1 (almost 8) has been once- he had a fall at nursery and cut his nose open. A couple of visits to walk-in/urgent care for illness in addition to GP visits. I've no idea how he managed to avoid further trips to A&E, given that he's always been a heady combination of clumsy and kamikaze! His nursery record was three accident forms in one day...

DS2 (2)- none so far. He's taken to climbing in a dangerous manner though, so we'll see.

Taytotots · 07/06/2019 00:36

DD 6 - Twice. At 2 - head injury, caused by fall, that needed glueing. At four - head injury, caused by fall, that needed stitches.
DS 6 - Three times. 18months. Head injury needing stitches, caused by falling on his 'unbreakable' glasses.
Around 2 burn to hand. Around 3 allergic reaction that caused his feet and hands to swell massively - still don't know what caused it and touch wood nit happened again.

FloofyDoof · 07/06/2019 01:12

DS (now 20) twice. Once tried to drink olbas oil, once fell off a wall at after school club and hit his head.

DD (now 18) too many times, mostly taken straight from school or after school club. broken thumb (twice), broken wrist, several sprains, concussion, cut head open, stitches in leg where she fell over and landed on a branch etc. She ran everywhere and climbed everything when she was little, and was that kid that constantly had scraped knees and bruised elbows from crashing about.

Doidoit19 · 07/06/2019 03:43

DS aged 5 - once earlier this year with high temp, drowsiness and light sensitivity.

DD aged 1 - at least 5 times (twice via emergency ambulance) as she has an airway defect so struggles to breathe generally. She’s usually admitted whenever she has croup or bronchiolitis as it makes her breathing far worse.

IAmNotAWitch · 07/06/2019 04:40

DS1 was a frequent flyer until around aged 9 when he seemed to gain spatial awareness and stopped running into things full pelt.

DS2 has been once, for croup in the middle of the night. He does not attempt to move through the world at full speed and is also able to corner better than his brother. Grin

Boneshere · 07/06/2019 04:55

4 kids, ages 12-4, three times in total for all children.

Twice for eldest, latest visit was a fractured wrist in 2017 and the other was me panicking when baby was 1 week old and I was 18, inexperienced and a FTM. Biscuit

The 3rd was last child who was 3 months old and had Bronchiolitis in 2015.

Touchwood it stays this quiet!

Boneshere · 07/06/2019 04:57

Tell a lie!

3rd child went once to get head glued after headbutting the school playground floor in 2017.

polkadotpixie · 07/06/2019 05:47

Twice and he's only 9 months old 😩

The first time for Bronchiolitis at 3 months old and the second time for dehydration after a bad reaction to food gave him severe diarrhoea at 5.5 months

redwoodmazza · 07/06/2019 13:48

One DS now aged 26!!!! Never been to A&E.

Titsywoo · 07/06/2019 13:51

DD 14 - never
DS 12 - Once with mild concussion after DD hit him on the head!

Pinkvoid · 07/06/2019 13:53

I went twice as a child. Once for cutting my head open, once with food poisoning.

My younger brother was in A&E every other week with some ailment or another (not really but he went A LOT). My DM always says if he had been born nowadays, SS would likely have been involved Grin. He was just forever hurting himself from a very young age, often quite bizarre accidents as well (he once fell running upstairs and bit so deeply into his tongue he almost bit right through the middle of it).

I think some children are more accident prone than others and I guess some are more prone to illnesses than others too. I’ve never been with any of my DC touch wood.

emotionalaffair · 07/06/2019 14:10

DD 9 has never been.

DS 12, has been many, many times. Mostly for allergic reactions (twice by ambulance), a couple of times for asthma, and couple of times for injuries.

MrsRhubarb · 07/06/2019 17:05

DC1 never.

DC2 once, bronchiolitis when they were eight months. GP had tried to get us straight onto a ward, but in the end we had to go via A&E as they had no beds, and wait there until one was available.

DesperadoDan · 07/06/2019 17:30

DD - never as a child, she was extraordinarily heathy and accident free.
Age 17 - a&e via ambulance when she got knocked off her moped, very lucky girl, she got knocked onto the other side of the road which was just past a bend, she could have been run over by oncoming traffic very easily.
Age 18-22 - around 5 times due to injuries from working with horses, broken thumb, dislocated shoulder and a bad accident which required surgery.

DS - ages 4-7 we were regulars at a&e, he was repeatedly hospitalised due to recurring bacterial tonsillitis, every 8-10 weeks on average, tonsils so engorged they would trigger his gag reflex so he would gag and vomit constantly. Hospitalised for IV fluids and antibiotics. Tonsils and adenoids were finally removed. One a&e trip for a chronic ear infection, he completely lost his balance and was disoriented. Other ear infections and issues were seen at out of hours. DS has Down Syndrome and I’ve always been over cautious when it comes to his health, every a&e trip resulted in him being admitted to the children’s ward.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 07/06/2019 17:31

3 times with dc1 (bumped head and 2 x broken bones) and once with dc2 (broken bone)
