How many times kids taken to A and E

Hi I'm just curious. I wondered how common it is for kids to go to a and e and for what reason?

I've been speaking to a lot of mums today and it seems to happen a lot more than I thought.

Eldest x1 at 20 weeks with chest infection
Youngest x1 broken leg

DrDreReturns · 06/06/2019 18:01

I've lost count! DS has severe allergies and suffered really badly with asthma when he was little. DD has never needed to go, touchwood!

bloodywhitecat · 06/06/2019 18:02

DD approx every 4-6 weeks with poorly controlled brittle asthma when she was between 5 and 7, countless other times through her childhood with asthma. DS a handful of times with asthma, once with a broken ankle. Both have been in an ambulance with blues and twos with seizures related to treatment for asthma.

juneau · 06/06/2019 18:03

DS1 - never
DS2 - twice for a very sudden, serious illness he came down with at 18 months old.

Kaykay06 · 06/06/2019 18:05

Probably not as many as they should as I’m a paeds nurse.
So none for ds1 split head for ds2 nowt for ds3 and ds4 numerous times with asthma. All in almost 18 years of parenting so hoping it stays that way.

nonwonderwoman · 06/06/2019 18:05

DD 7 - x2 - broken arm and vomiting after a head injury (both following separate swing incidents)

DS 4 - x2 went in for croup when 6months and when 18 months when he bit through his tongue (lots of blood) and he looked like a snake for a few days. It healed amazingly quickly!

Sleepyblueocean · 06/06/2019 18:06

Ds has been 4 times between aged 4 and 8. All with sudden clammy skin, high temp and unresponsiveness. Have never found out why.
I dread him breaking something and having to go as he wouldn't cope with being there, waiting and cooperating. It's bad enough at an ordinary appointment.

IntoValhalla · 06/06/2019 18:06

DC1:
1x febrile seizure as a baby, she lost consciousness and ended up being kept in on the children’s ward for a couple of days
1x dislocated elbow after swan diving down the stairs, I grabbed her arm to save her and popped her elbow in the process Blush (don’t shoot me...extremely common according to the paediatric nurse who popped it back in Confused)
1x swallowed coin. X-ray showed it had cleared her throat, so just a case of waiting for her to poop it out Confused

DC2:
1x anaphylactic shock (worst day of my life Sad never been so utterly terrified before)
1x slip in the bath, bashed head then vomited. (Bit of a bump and mild concussion)
1x split head open on the corner of a table, cut cleaned and glued pretty swiftly

All in all, considering how feral/clumsy my DCs are I think we’ve got off pretty lightly!

LakieLady · 06/06/2019 18:07

My DB had 3 trips to A&E before he was a year old, all for accidents.

They thought he was an abused child, and had our DPs in separate rooms while they questioned them separately. He was just a clumsy bugger and still is. He's 53 now, and still has some sort of accident requiring hospital treatment most years.

YouBoggleMyMind · 06/06/2019 18:07

So far twice in 18m.
Once for sepsis and once for pulled elbow. I never want to go back to A&E again but I figured that is unlikely as DS is only 18m old and we want another baby!

Grasswillbegreener · 06/06/2019 18:09

Eldst 4 x I think, 3 of them before school age. The broken collarbone was xrayed and home, the others all led to at least an overnight admission. (1x scarlet fever + sepsis, 1x badly squashed finger requiring repair under GA, more recently 1x potential appendicitis observed for the rest of the night). Youngest 2 or 3 I think - first one after a temperature as a newborn led to overnight admission, the other 1 or 2 would have been toddler bumps such as the time he launched himself off the top of his sister's cabin bed. Both now healthy teens!

ElizaPancakes · 06/06/2019 18:10

DT - one was there three times before age 3 and once had to call an ambulance.

Other one - never and he’s ten now.

DS 3 is 7, has been once when he fell out of a trolley and split his head open when a toddler, but not since.

YouBoggleMyMind · 06/06/2019 18:10

@IntoValhalla yes! I did this to DS! Pulled him away from something and popped his elbow out!! I was mortified but the Nurse and Consultant were very nice about it and said it was so common!

AbbyHammond · 06/06/2019 18:10

Never - 5dc and almost 9 years.

No broken bones or serious illnesses.

OvO · 06/06/2019 18:11

4 times and 3 times for my two DS's.

Yet neither have been to the GP. They're 11 and 14.

So they are accident prone but illness free!

Greyhound22 · 06/06/2019 18:12

DS4 has been once for a burn to his hand and once for a high fever and rash.

graziemille567 · 06/06/2019 18:14

DS4 - have taken him twice. Once was for a rash which turned out to be absolutely nothing, but after speaking to NHS on the phone they urged me to get to A&E. Second time was for a fractured wrist after he fell on it at a funny angle. Hopefully that is it for hospital visits for a while!

sar302 · 06/06/2019 18:14

DS 18 months:

4 weeks old - referred for rash and temp by out of hours GP

7 weeks old - car accident

6 months old - tonsillitis

6 months and 2 days - rash, suspected allergic to antibiotics for tonsillitis. Was actually hand, foot and mouth (that was my mistake!)

6 months, one week - anaphylactic response to first taste of egg

11 months - fell and smashed his mouth on the tv unit, torn frenulum and bit through lip. So much blood...

12 months - car accident

We are now 6 months A&E free! I'm vaguely surprised we were never referred to social services to be honest...

Drogonssmile · 06/06/2019 18:14

DS1 twice with tonsillitis
DS2 not been yet 🤞🏻 at 2.5yo

GMtoBe · 06/06/2019 18:15

DD is 19 months now and when she was 15 months she fell down the stairs (all of them) and we took her. Nothing wrong thankfully, just a sprained ankle!

isabellerossignol · 06/06/2019 18:16

Once in 13 years, for broken finger.

Browniegal13 · 06/06/2019 18:17

Dd12 has been four times (broken eye socket, meningitis, broken toe and e-coli). Ds10 once for falling into a window! X

Dropitlikeitshot · 06/06/2019 18:19

DC learnt to crawl at 5 1/2 months, we learnt this as they left the bathroom as DH was running their bath, and fell down the stairs.

That is our (so far) only trip, but it was bloody scary! The sound of her falling will never leave me.

Eastpoint · 06/06/2019 18:19

3 children, between 18 & 21. One of them has been twice, once for a suspected broken arm and once for a burn. So twice over 58 years. I’ve been once since 1985, I’ve never known DH to go since 1990, probably never.

CMOTDibbler · 06/06/2019 18:20

ds is 13, and has been to minor injuries once. In fact until he had a nasty prolonged vomiting virus (3 weeks!) last year he hadn't been to the GP since he was 4

I've only been to A&E once, minor injuries twice in my 46 years
