How many times kids taken to A and E

Hi I'm just curious. I wondered how common it is for kids to go to a and e and for what reason?

I've been speaking to a lot of mums today and it seems to happen a lot more than I thought.

Twice each. But they are only 1 & 2 YO so I fear there may be more to come
For high temp which wouldn't break with meds and for one none breathing episode leading to unconsciousness

Sexnotgender · 06/06/2019 19:11

Also never had a drs home visit

Lucky you. GP came to our home for DD aged 18 months and told us to take her straight to A&E. He later told my mum he didn’t think she’d make it.

goose1964 · 06/06/2019 19:11

Mine went about three times in total, one each, rugby injury x2(not very serious ) and broken elbow.

DGS has been 3 times in the last 6 months as he gets breathing difficulties when he has a cold and his puffer wasn't helping with the last 2, always after the doctors had closed

EleanorReally · 06/06/2019 19:12

this thread makes for some scary, yet recognisable reading

Zbag · 06/06/2019 19:14

DD 1 has been once. DD 2 has never been.

justasking111 · 06/06/2019 19:15

DS1 twice in three weeks as a toddler for hitting his head hard. Then sports injuries over the years.
DS2 often asthma related crises. Then the sports injuries
DS3 once for a burn, once for agonising stomach pains. No sports injuries thank goodness.

louise5754 · 06/06/2019 19:18

DD7

infected toe when she was 3

DD9

High temp when 6 months old
Split her head when talking over at school last year.

I'm still amazed mine haven't had more accidents as I'm rather dopey.

Ds13 once on midwife advice, jaundice at 7 days old, 4 day admission
Dd 11 twice- non blanching rash which turned out to be nothing scary, bit right through her lip falling over at nursery admitted for review by plastic surgery
Ds 7 never
Ds 5 once- non blanching rash and floppy, 7 day admission

MammaMia19 · 06/06/2019 19:18

1st Dc none
2nd dc twice by ambulance due to asthma
My 1st is very very rarely ill and I used to wonder how kids ended up in a&e so many times until dc 2 came along! He’s always ill, viral Infections kick off his asthma and the blue pump doesn’t always work.

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 06/06/2019 19:20

Oh, and another for dd11- broken finger after her big brother slammed a door on it

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 06/06/2019 19:21

Oh, make that 4 for dd11- forgot the pea she stuffed up her nose aged 2

BrillyPribble · 06/06/2019 19:22

I'd never even been in an ambulance till I had kids. Now have been in two, once with eldest, once with youngest.
Not very many trips to a&e. 3 with eldest (teenager) all for accidents.
2 or 3 with middle one but all as a baby for illnesses.
3 or 4 for youngest, mostly asthma.
So far, no one has broken anything......

Betty1064 · 06/06/2019 19:23

DD (7 years) once with suspected sepsis, fortunately it was just severe tonsillitis and she was fine.

DS (18 months) twice, first time with a paint chip stuck in his eye and the second time DD knocked him into a coffee table and he split the side of his eye open.

elliejjtiny · 06/06/2019 19:23

Ds1 has been once for pfb syndrome, once for swallowing a £2 coin, once for falling down the stairs and once for an eye infection.

Middle 3 have been once each for jumping on the bed and splitting their heads open on separate occasions.

Youngest has never been.

Dc are aged 12, 11, 8, 6 and 4

tor8181 · 06/06/2019 19:23

never

kids are nearly 9 and 15

neversleepagain · 06/06/2019 19:24

Dd1 taken by ambulance when she suddenly stopped breathing at age 2 weeks.
Referred by GP when she needed oxygen when she had a bad viral infection, age 18 months.
Third time was to have her eye stitched after slipping at the pool, age 3.

Dd2.
First time was when she was 6 weeks for silent reflux which caused her to breath hold. She was admitted for 2 days for tests.
Taken by ambulance at 9 months for suspected sepis. She spent 5 days on hospital.
For a fractured wrist while cartwheeling, age 6.

Crunchymum · 06/06/2019 19:27

DC1 (6)

  • viral induced wheeze aged 13m - admitted for 72 hours.
  • fell down concrete steps aged 14m, taken by ambulance due to him being under age of 2 (it's the law to take under 2's to A&E if an ambulance is called even if the paramedics don't think its required). No admission.
  • head bang aged 2. Was fine the day it happened but had a "funny turn" (was floppy and unresponsive) the next day so ambulance called. He was taken in due to his blood sugars being low nothing to do with head injury but no admission
  • dehydration following 60 hours of vomiting (gastro bug) aged 4. Admitted first 24 hours.

DC2 (4)

  • bronchiolitis aged 12m. No admission
  • burn on arm (from iron. Was under my supervision Shock). No admission not any SS involvement but we did have to go back to A&E 48h later for a dressing change and to assess if we needed referring to the burns unit. We didn't

DC3 (17m)

  • once when she pulled her NG tube out aged 3 months. We were there and back in an hour. It was just me , DC and 2 nurses. It was 4am on a Tuesday though.

DC3 was in Neonatal for 15 days, has a rare genetic condition and was NG tube fed for 12 months but touch wood we haven't needed to take her to A&E for illness or accident, yet

Crunchymum · 06/06/2019 19:28
  • DC2 was 18m when the iron accident happened.
Missingstreetlife · 06/06/2019 19:29

Accident should be minimal. Emergency may depend on other health issues

FairyBatman · 06/06/2019 19:30

DS have been twice.

Once for concussion and suspected broken nose, fell off a slide, still don’t quite know how. This was about 3 weeks after he was placed with us.

One for broken leg as in bed asleep woke up stepped out of toddler bed and broke his leg Confused

notso · 06/06/2019 19:31

DC1once for a broken foot.
Also was sent straight to children's ward by GP as a baby due to virus.

Dc2 once although he didn't need to be there really. He fell down stairs at a family friends house and wouldn't stop screaming so my Mum and her clucking friends forced me to take him. What he needed was to go home and sleep. We were sent home after 4 hours of him screaming the place down with a head injury sheet.

DC3 several time for breathing difficulties, twice in an ambulance.
Once as his foot was swollen and he wouldn't walk on it. When we got there he began running around like a loon.

DC4 twice for nasty cuts that wouldn't stop bleeding one on his head and one on his thumb.
He also went in an ambulance straight after birth due to his speedy arrival!

Gooseysgirl · 06/06/2019 19:31

Twice with each of mine (age 5 & 7)

PantsyMcPantsface · 06/06/2019 19:32

DD1 - once for breathing difficulties, couple of times for bumps I just wanted double checking weren't anything more than that (she's a right bloody drama queen when she gets the slightest scrape so it's hard to tell sometimes.

DD2 - breathing difficulties, pneumonia in the height of summer and she swallowed a button once and 111 told us to take her (and A+E rolled their eyes because they just send everyone who rings up to go along).

DD2 in particular is a walking collection of bumps and bruises because of her coordination problems but so far they've just been impressive ouchies on her legs really. DD1 would have herself at A+E to have an elastoplast removed with the fuss she makes given half the chance.

DH on the other hand is a liability on two legs.

Lovelydovey · 06/06/2019 19:34

DS1 now aged 10 - once aged around 11months for gastroenteritis. DS2 now aged 7 - once aged 6 for a broken finger (which required an op to reset). So not frequent fliers!

notso · 06/06/2019 19:34

Also never had a drs home visit

My doctors won't do a home visit for a sick child unless very special circumstances.
