My MIL is firmly of the belief that I'm an 'old' mum (her words, not mine!) As I was 34 when I first became a mother.

I thought I was probably about average, or at least I seem to be for my group of friends.

MIL was 24 so yes I can understand that I'm a full 10 years older, but not quite as decrepit as she has made out. This charming remark was followed by the suggestion that my eggs will soon be dried up so if I want more I need to do it this year (I'm 35). Am I being naïve or is she old fashioned in her views?

YEs I would say 35 is considered an older mum. I was 22 when I had my first.

lucymegan · 02/06/2019 17:56

I was 17 when I had my first and 32 when I had my last.

PotteringAlong · 02/06/2019 17:57

32 for number 1, 34 for number 2 and 37 for number 3.

She’s right in some ways; egg quality does diminish as you get older and therefore biologically the sooner the better, but 35 is not the oldest mother you will get by a long shot!

Treaclesweet · 02/06/2019 17:57

I was 29 and felt fairly old...

Pleasegodgotosleep · 02/06/2019 17:57

I was 36 and 39. Considered older mum as over 35 but I didn't meet my husband until I was 35! Xx

Isthebigwomanhere · 02/06/2019 17:57

I was 19

HenSolo · 02/06/2019 17:57

32 but one of the youngest I know in my area, most of my ‘mum’ friends are older

Duchessgummybuns · 02/06/2019 17:58

23 when I had my one and only

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 02/06/2019 17:58

I was 19 yrs old with my first and 41 yrs old with my second! I know I know!!!!

SecretWitch · 02/06/2019 17:58

I was 32 for the first, 34 for the second and 42 with my third. I never felt old. We chose to get graduate degrees and buy our home before starting a family.

Merryoldgoat · 02/06/2019 17:59

34 - in my NCT class there were 6 first time mum’s:

32, 34, 34, 38, 38, 39

I had expected to be the oldest so was surprised.

I had second at 39, few weeks before my 40th birthday.

SpeckledyHen · 02/06/2019 17:59

39 and 5 months . 41 and 10 months second . My first took 2 months and the second was the first of tic . Far from dried up .

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 02/06/2019 17:59
  1. I was one of the older mums at DS's primary!
Notashandyta · 02/06/2019 17:59

35 first, 37 second and 38 last.

Never thought twice about my age, just pleased to have a fab family.

What crap to hear people in their twenties feeling like old mums Confused

Just had my first and im 31

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/06/2019 18:00

32!

If I had my time again both dh and I say we would have started sooner, we were together aged 24/25. Didn’t feel ready at the time.

Starlive23 · 02/06/2019 18:00

Crikey maybe it's me then! Most of my friends were early to mid 30s so I assumed this was the norm for nowadays! Blush

33 and I was an average age in my area in London. There were first time mums in my friendship circle of 27-39

Waiting1987 · 02/06/2019 18:00

28 first and 31 second.

motherofcats81 · 02/06/2019 18:00

I am in my second trimester with my first baby and I will be 38 in the summer.

The NHS no longer considers you a "geriatric mother" at 35, they've changed that to 40 now. At my age I'm considered low risk.

Sugarformyhoney · 02/06/2019 18:01

23,25 and 27. I consider anything over 35 to be an ‘older mum’ definitely. Personally I wanted to be done by 30 as it was important to me to be a young mum. Everyone is different though, with different circumstances and ideals

IntoValhalla · 02/06/2019 18:01

I was 19 when I fell pregnant with DC1, 20 when she was born. Then had DC2 17 months later. Now pregnant with DC3 2.5yrs after DC2 - I’m 24.
I am without a doubt the youngest mum at the toddler groups I go to. Average age of the other mums I’d estimate at around 30-32. I don’t consider them older mums because having your first in your early 30’s seems to be quite normal these days!

RomanyQueen1 · 02/06/2019 18:02

26 with ds1 and 29 with ds2 when I was considered a mature in maternity.
However, when I had dd at 37 it was considered as the norm.
I think it depends on the average at that time.
Years ago 50's/60's you'd be considered as left on the shelf after 21.
