My MIL is firmly of the belief that I'm an 'old' mum (her words, not mine!) As I was 34 when I first became a mother.

I thought I was probably about average, or at least I seem to be for my group of friends.

MIL was 24 so yes I can understand that I'm a full 10 years older, but not quite as decrepit as she has made out. This charming remark was followed by the suggestion that my eggs will soon be dried up so if I want more I need to do it this year (I'm 35). Am I being naïve or is she old fashioned in her views?

  1. My friends are all in this kind of age bracket too.
Amelia910 · 02/06/2019 18:17

28 here which I believe is the average age for first time mothers in the UK. we are the first ones out of both mine and partners my friendship groups to have a baby though

AnnaSteen · 02/06/2019 18:17

The average age of a first time mother where I live (Ireland) is 31 and 65% of babies are born to women aged between 30-39. So you are slightly above average but definitely in the norm here. In my husbands friend group the wives are around 35 and most have just had 2nd child or still only one child. In my friend group (33) about 4 friends are on baby no1. I think it depends on If you went to university. You would be the norm in our group and no one would think you were old as we all spent our 20’s in university then careers and travel. So only settled down in early 30’s and we still had around 5-6 weddings last year.

I’d say in the UK you’re probably older as with a much larger population you get different attitudes toward education and less people going to university, Uk has a higher teen pregnancy rate than Ireland and the average age getting married in UK is lower than Ireland. So overall I’d say you’re in the norm in Ireland no one would call you an old mum but probably a bit Sbove average age in the UK.

34 - seemed to be the norm around here ( London suburbs) My DD is talking about ttc in a couple of years time , when she will be thirty - none of her friends or peers have yet except one accident .

Slicedpineapple · 02/06/2019 18:18
  1. Considered young by some people around me who have had their firsts in their 30s and 40s, but I also know a lot of people who have had their first around 20, so it's a really mixed bag.
IntoValhalla · 02/06/2019 18:18

OnTheEdgeMumOf4 I absolutely love that!! I keep thinking that when I’m 35, my kids will be 15, 14 and 12 - there’s so many things we’ll be able to do as a family that we can all enjoy!
DH and I loved theme parks before kids, but that’s no fun with 2 toddlers! When we’ve got 3 teenagers, Alton’s Towers will be epic Grin

hellomellowyellow87 · 02/06/2019 18:19

I was 20 when I got pregnant, 21 when I had her

hellomellowyellow87 · 02/06/2019 18:20

Personally OP, I’d say 34 is an older mum but there’s many benefits to that! Just as there are benefits to having children younger! Don’t worry about it.
Most of my friends had their first babies at 28/29 basically as soon as they were married

EmrysAtticus · 02/06/2019 18:20

27 for my first and last. Definitely the right age for me but only one of my friends has a child so clearly not the right age for most of my peers.

BertrandRussell · 02/06/2019 18:21

My mil was 15. She was very vocal indeed about her children not following in her footsteps-and none of them did.

NoNameIdeas · 02/06/2019 18:24

I was 32...I'd say about average for my friends, a few younger and more older though

isthismad · 02/06/2019 18:25

I was 30 with my first, I think it depends where you live as in my area that's definitely younger than average.

HemlockStarglimmer · 02/06/2019 18:25
  1. Very old in any ones book.

My mum was taken aback to hear herself described as a geriatric mother when she had her first at 25.

elliejjtiny · 02/06/2019 18:26

24 when I had my first and 32 when I had my 5th and last. I am about average aged with ds1's friends mums. With my youngest I was the oldest in the maternity ward by quite a few years, it was mostly teenagers and two ladies in their twenties who were having a baby with their new partner after a big age gap.

Janleverton · 02/06/2019 18:28

(Just) 28 when first was born.

In my post natal group I was the third youngest. Ages ranging from 25 to 40 I think. Was 25/27/28/28/30/30/31/34/40 (or thereabouts).

3boysandabump · 02/06/2019 18:29

1st baby - 22
2nd baby - 23
3rd baby - 27
4th baby - 30

calmpuppycrazykids · 02/06/2019 18:29

I was 19 when I had my first
20 with my second
28 with DC3
35 with DC4
37 with DC5

Gigia · 02/06/2019 18:30

I was 20 when I had my ds. I would consider 35 average.

MaryBoBary · 02/06/2019 18:30
  1. Am definitely the youngest mum in our rural area, most are a good 5 - 10 years older than me
firstimemamma · 02/06/2019 18:30

I was 28 and I saw on a documentary that the uk average is 27 (although this may not be 100% accurate obviously!)

MrsMiggins37 · 02/06/2019 18:31

32, nearly 33 when I gave birth to the first. 35 when I had the second. 34 is not old. When I first went to see the midwife when pregnant with my first she said “oh, you’re a young one!”

Most people I know have been slightly younger than I was when I had my first though maybe around 30/31.

Starlive23 · 02/06/2019 18:31

ILoveEurovision that's really similar to my situation. I'm a solicitor and I think probably the university thing may have added a few years! There are two secretaries in my firm my age with young teenagers. I rely heavily on them for advice!!

We did have a couple of losses before DD but didn't get together with DH until mid-twenties, plus the 100000+ years it took to save the house deposit (maybe a slight exaggeration there...)

Purpleartichoke · 02/06/2019 18:32

34
Perfectly typical in my peer group.

MrsMiggins37 · 02/06/2019 18:32

My mum was taken aback to hear herself described as a geriatric mother when she had her first at 25

My mum was the same age when I was born and said the same!
