My MIL is firmly of the belief that I'm an 'old' mum (her words, not mine!) As I was 34 when I first became a mother.

I thought I was probably about average, or at least I seem to be for my group of friends.

MIL was 24 so yes I can understand that I'm a full 10 years older, but not quite as decrepit as she has made out. This charming remark was followed by the suggestion that my eggs will soon be dried up so if I want more I need to do it this year (I'm 35). Am I being naïve or is she old fashioned in her views?

36 is classed as a 'geriatric' mother OP so you're not far off.

Most have their first in their 20's.

WhiteRedRose · 02/06/2019 21:44

@SquigglePigs you'd very rarely find any young mums at NCT classes so it's not really an accurate depiction. NCT is very much lower middle - middle class, middle age Mums and that's who it is targeted at.

sparkli · 02/06/2019 21:45

I had my 1st at 23 and my 6th the day before my 30th birthday. I

“36 is classed as a 'geriatric' mother OP so you're not far off”

I must have been incredibly lucky. I had mine at 37 and 41 and nobody ever mentioned my age. Not even once.

tomtom1999xx · 02/06/2019 21:46

NCT classes are very expensive too, so only a certain demographic can attend.,

Walkamileinmyshoesbeforeujudge · 02/06/2019 21:47

Sparkli I also had number 6 at 30!!

Zakidoodles23 · 02/06/2019 21:48

1st - 29
Currently pregnant with 2nd - 34
I wanted to have my children before I was 30 but after many miscarriages I realised it really doesn't matter (same with age gap between children) just grateful to have them. Sometimes these things are just out of our control.

MaryShelley1818 · 02/06/2019 21:51

I was 39 when I had DS. Currently 41 and ttc number 2.

Starlive23 · 02/06/2019 21:51

Such a mix of responses! Well certainly it seems from these responses it would seem there are plenty of others around my age, so I won't reach panic stations just yet!

The word geriatric is so unflattering isn't it? At no other time if life would you expect to see that word in your 30s and 40s. Bloody geriatric Hmm

I was 24 with my first, 27 with my second and now 34 with an 18 week old! Definitely my last and was treated like an older mum this most recent pregnancy

Ginger1982 · 02/06/2019 22:02

@WhiteRedRose I don't think 'most' have them in their 20s at all and the tone of your post is actually quite offensive.

Geekster1963 · 02/06/2019 22:03

I was four months off turning 40 when I had our one and only DD. Would have been five years younger but we had six miscarriages before her.

Ilovemyliferightnow · 02/06/2019 22:03

Just had my first at 25, been married 3 years

SusieSusieSoo · 02/06/2019 22:21

40 I was still at the gym when I was overdue, back 6 weeks later. He is now a strapping 6 year old! Some of the junior doctors at ante natal clinic looked at me as though they were terrified. I have a group of "playgroup mum" friends. All dc's are yr1 or yr2. I am mid range age wise within this group older than all ds' parents tho good luck xx

Nanalisa60 · 02/06/2019 22:22

I had my first baby two days after my 25 birthday!! Second one month after my 26.

Starlive23 · 02/06/2019 22:25

27 with DS1 then 28 with DS2, 18 months apart.

All the mums I met who were expecting at the same time as me were late 30s to mid 40s.

DreamsOfDownUnder · 02/06/2019 22:43

I just turned 26 when I had my baby in August of last year. I felt quite young though compared to the others in my postnatal bay xx

Rufus27 · 02/06/2019 22:44

I’m 47, with a one (nearly two) and a just three year old. Adopted both as v young babies, so not sure if I count in this debate (ie not related to fertility levels). In adoption terms, DP and I were at the younger end of the age scale on the courses we attended.

BetsyBigNose · 02/06/2019 23:11

I was 27 and 28 when I had my 2 DDs.

In my antenatal group the first time round (in 2007), there was one Mum of 19, another the same age as me, 5 women aged between 33 and 38 and one lady who was expecting her first at 42. I felt like a 'younger Mum' and still feel like that now - many of DD12's friends Mum's are 10+ years older than me, so 50-odd to my 39. I'm still in touch with the 19 year old Mum; she's now 31 and 3 weeks ago gave birth to her 5th DC (which she claims will be her last...)! Grin

My SIL is currently 37/40 with her first baby at 45! They've had a donor egg and IVF, she'll be nearly 60 when baby becomes a teenager but they're over the moon! Personally, I'm glad we had ours relatively young as I can't imagine having the necessary energy required for the toddler stage these days! There are definitely pros and cons of having babies older or younger, it's just a matter of personal choice really.

yoursworried · 03/06/2019 06:28

26 for first, a few weeks off 27. I was quite a bit younger than all the friends I made at a baby group, and younger by a couple of years than my friends from uni and school.

Juanbablo · 03/06/2019 06:43

I was 19 when I had my first baby. 22 and 26 for second and third.

nanini · 03/06/2019 13:44

38 but it took us 10 years! conceived naturally after giving up on many years of fertility treatment.
