My MIL is firmly of the belief that I'm an 'old' mum (her words, not mine!) As I was 34 when I first became a mother.

I thought I was probably about average, or at least I seem to be for my group of friends.

MIL was 24 so yes I can understand that I'm a full 10 years older, but not quite as decrepit as she has made out. This charming remark was followed by the suggestion that my eggs will soon be dried up so if I want more I need to do it this year (I'm 35). Am I being naïve or is she old fashioned in her views?

34 DC 1 and 35 DC 2, I consider myself an
older mum

elQuintoConyo · 02/06/2019 18:48

36 1/2. One child. Thought that was plenty for us.

We got together at 23 (me) and 25 (DH) but didn't fancy having DC until one day we just did. We're very much a 'mañana' kind of couple Grin

No one has commented on our age. DS is now 8, parents if his classmates range between around 30- 50 or so.

We still have the energy to go hiking with DS, cycling, swimming etc. We all walk the dog miles. It doesn't bother me that by the time he's 18 I'll be 54. Far from dead!

Had mine late 20s which was viewed by my university friends as unbelievably young and in my NCT class I was the youngest by at least five years. I’m now in my early 30s and still the only one out of my uni friends with children. I’m educated to masters level and have a graduate level career and I’m definitely an anomaly based on my peer group. I certainly don’t see 34 as an older mother- it will be the norm for my peer group!

Starlive23 · 02/06/2019 18:52

@Lotts123 that's the exact reason I was waiting the 2 years, had a c section with DD so waiting as long as I can (within reason) to TTC #2

Just turned 28 with my one and only. Had been with dh since 18. Think i was too young or really but I think leaving it I wouldn't of had any. It was now or never. Now 34. No desire for anymore

Poetryinaction · 02/06/2019 18:52

38, I’m a little worried lederhosen than most of my mum friends, about 3-5 years.

Ohyesiam · 02/06/2019 18:55

Wtf??worried lederhosen?
I thought I’d typed “ older “ Confused

Lucyccfc68 · 02/06/2019 18:55

36 and wasn't classed as an 'older' Mum by the hospital. It was treated like any other Mum on the ward. The majority on my ward were probably over 30.

TurquoiseAndPurple · 02/06/2019 18:56

According to google the average as is 30. I was (and am still) 28. Perfect age I think!

tigerbear · 02/06/2019 18:57

34, about average for my area.

Mintypea5 · 02/06/2019 18:58

I consider myself a young mum
She's 3 now

kaytee87 · 02/06/2019 19:00

A couple of days before I turned 29.

Smellybluecheese · 02/06/2019 19:03
  1. Average age of my NCT group was 34/35
meow1989 · 02/06/2019 19:03

28, a few weeks off my 29th birthday. Locally first time mums seem to range between 25 and 35.

DramaAlpaca · 02/06/2019 19:03

I had my DC at 29, 30 & 33 in the 90s. That was about average for my friends & my NCT class.

Very similar to my DM who had hers at 28 & 31, back in the 60s. She tells me she was considered an older mum back then.

aPengTing · 02/06/2019 19:06
  1. I didn’t consider that I was a young mum, but that might be because I lived in an area where girls as young as 13 were pregnant.
BelulahBlanca · 02/06/2019 19:06

26 when I got pregnant and 27 when she was born. I can think of at least 10 girls in my school year who have had babies in the last 2 years.

DefinatelyAWeeGobshite · 02/06/2019 19:08

Twins at 29, I turned 30 three weeks later. Most friends in my circle have had kids 26 and later.

BackBoiler · 02/06/2019 19:10

23, 27 and 29. I was lucky to have met a great man to have kids with early on in life as I had a hysterectomy at 33.

loie · 02/06/2019 19:12

16!

Yogagirl123 · 02/06/2019 19:18

29, but my mum acted like I was the oldest mother ever!

HavelockVetinari · 02/06/2019 19:19

I was 32, started TTC at 29 but had fertility problems and needed IVF. Currently 34 and TTC #2, on our 3rd round post-DS (he took 3 goes so it's our 6th round in total).

In my area and profession most people are 30+ with their first.
