My MIL is firmly of the belief that I'm an 'old' mum (her words, not mine!) As I was 34 when I first became a mother.

I thought I was probably about average, or at least I seem to be for my group of friends.

MIL was 24 so yes I can understand that I'm a full 10 years older, but not quite as decrepit as she has made out. This charming remark was followed by the suggestion that my eggs will soon be dried up so if I want more I need to do it this year (I'm 35). Am I being naïve or is she old fashioned in her views?

As for the ‘dried up egg’ comment, I got pregnant first month both times, with PCOS, and being overweight.

A colleague had her son at 46 and had an uneventful pregnancy and conceived naturally.

You might have trouble, you might not. None of that is a reason to have a child before it’s right for you.

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 02/06/2019 18:03

31 - my boyfriends ex said she'd never have a baby over 30 as it's 'too old' Grin

duckling84 · 02/06/2019 18:03

19 I had my first, 31 I had my 4th and last. It was definitely harder being pregnant and with a newborn in my 30s then in my teens. And it is a proven fact that fertility does decline from 35 so yes, I would say your an older first time mum (but not the oldest)

Starlive23 · 02/06/2019 18:03

Ooh quite a mixed bag then. I wasn't offended by MIL (she's lovely) just genuinely interested as I'd not really thought of myself as older.

28 with my first and I was the oldest by miles in my NHS anti-natal classes. At clinics though there was a wide range of ages.

With my second I was 30 and at the baby massage class I attended all the mums were all similar ages and I was the only one on my second baby.

tomtom1999xx · 02/06/2019 18:04

23 with my 1st.
Had my last at 37 and felt ancient ( although it’s almost seen as young these days Grin )

cliffdiver · 02/06/2019 18:06

25 with my first.

Then 27 with my second (and last!)

icecreamsundae32 · 02/06/2019 18:07

22, 24, 31 (2 losses in between 2&3 otherwise I'd have liked to be done by 30)

formerbabe · 02/06/2019 18:07

26...considered very young in my social circle. My friends are late thirties now and only just considering having children.

I remember chatting to my 21 year old hairdresser though and she was saying she was the only one of her friends who hadn't had a baby yet.

Really depends on what social demographic you come from.

Cocacolathanks · 02/06/2019 18:07

I was 21 when I had my first, 23 when I had my second and 24 for the third and last.

Kenworthington · 02/06/2019 18:08

23 (and 1 day!)

OnTheEdgeMumOf4 · 02/06/2019 18:09

17 with my first and 25 with my last! Mine are all of the lovely age now and I'm young enough to get involved with activities my 14 year old wants to do.. even if my fear kicks in before his 😂

Megan2018 · 02/06/2019 18:09

I am 25+3 with first baby at 41, DH 46!
All my friends were 38+

Babdoc · 02/06/2019 18:12

33 and 35. That was nearly 30 years ago, and I didn’t feel old- my SILs were all similar ages, and ditto my colleagues. As doctors, we needed to get through the years of gruelling 100 hour weeks as juniors before considering pregnancy!

zukiecat · 02/06/2019 18:13

24 for DD1

DD2 was born four days before my 26th birthday

A friend had her first at 33 and her second at 42

Yukka · 02/06/2019 18:13

Am 40 and currently pregnant with my first. I recently did a research paper for work, over 35 pregnancy has increased by over 20% and teenage pregnancies down by the same. There has been a shift with women valuing education, career and financial stability ‘as well as’ family life so we’re doing it later...

buttonup26 · 02/06/2019 18:14

Fedoratheexploreer · 02/06/2019 18:15

DS1 was born in the June and I turned 17 in the August. I was 19 when’s dS2 was born.

ILoveEurovision · 02/06/2019 18:16

I was 32 going on 33.

ONS says the mean average age for first time mums is 28.8.
www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/livebirths/bulletins/birthcharacteristicsinenglandandwales/2017#average-ages-of-mothers-and-fathers-of-all-babies-have-continued-to-rise

It definitely does vary massively. Where I work, apart from the occasional exception, the female lawyers all have babies in their 30s and the secretaries in their 20s. It's probably largely because the lawyers have to spend longer studying and so are older when they feel sufficiently established in their career to take time off for maternity leave.

foreverone · 02/06/2019 18:16

I am 25 with my first and I am always the youngest one at all the baby groups to be fair.

Walkamileinmyshoesbeforeujudge · 02/06/2019 18:17
