My MIL is firmly of the belief that I'm an 'old' mum (her words, not mine!) As I was 34 when I first became a mother.

I thought I was probably about average, or at least I seem to be for my group of friends.

MIL was 24 so yes I can understand that I'm a full 10 years older, but not quite as decrepit as she has made out. This charming remark was followed by the suggestion that my eggs will soon be dried up so if I want more I need to do it this year (I'm 35). Am I being naïve or is she old fashioned in her views?

I was 29.

Your mother in law should not say hurtful things, 34 is nothing nowadays.

Tobebythesea · 02/06/2019 18:33

I had my first at 32 and I’m currently expecting my second aged 35 (v nearly 36). In my NCT group age ranges from 27-38 with around 32 being the average. South East

owlofathena · 02/06/2019 18:34

I was 29 (2 months shy of my 30th birthday) with first and currently pregnant with second who is due around my 32nd birthday. I would say I was about average age wise at my baby group. Some first mums are in their mid twenties but most of us were 30 or close to 30 with our first

SingingSands · 02/06/2019 18:34

I was 25. My mum told me I was too young!

Starlive23 · 02/06/2019 18:34

@Hemlock...I'd have been bloody horrified too!

26 and 29. I was determined to have it over and done with by the time I was 30 when I was sterilised. I think they were sensible ages, not to young and not too old

redastherose · 02/06/2019 18:35

23 for my first 33 for my second. Technically your MIL is right in that your egg quality is supposed to decline and generally fertility does drop from mid thirties. If you want more then probably best to get on with it.

22 and 27 for me.

wonkylegs · 02/06/2019 18:36

I was 29 but was the first out of my group of uni friends - our course length meant that the youngest to qualify were 26, most of them have had their kids in the past few years (late 30s) when I have had my second.
However at DS1s school I'm an old mum amongst his friends whose mums are generally 10yrs younger than me l.
There is no such thing as a right time only a right time for you so ignore.

riotlady · 02/06/2019 18:36

Depends on your social group I think, I was 25 and the first of my friends to have a baby, the majority of the mums I know through toddler groups etc are in their 30s (a large proportion are in their late 30s actually!)

Just googled and apparantly the average age of first tine mums in the uk is 30

Bananamint · 02/06/2019 18:36

28 with DC1 and 31 with DC2.

CarpeVitam · 02/06/2019 18:37

21 here

username55675 · 02/06/2019 18:37

I was 29 Smile my mum had me and my sister in her 40s .

AngeloMysterioso · 02/06/2019 18:38

I’m expecting my first, I’ll be 34 when s/he gets here. My DM was 33, 34 and just shy of 37 with hers. But she’s been telling me to hurry up and have babies because I’ll be an elderly primigravida since I was about 27...

happymummy12345 · 02/06/2019 18:38

I was 22 when I had my first. Currently only have one.

stepup123 · 02/06/2019 18:39

This is an interesting thread. My sister is a midwife. I mentioned the other day how I was 'done' with having more children. I have two dc (had the babies in my twenties) and she said 'at 34, having another baby should be the last thing on your mind!' I was a bit shocked to be honest. We do live in an area where people tend to settle down very young.

tor8181 · 02/06/2019 18:39

im 38 now but caring needs at home mean we dont have sex so not possible atm, efven though i really really want another

i do know a 51 y old though thats expecting her first, too her 15 years of trying and hundreds on ivf before she went abroad and used a donor egg

teenybean · 02/06/2019 18:40

23 for ds, 25 for dd1 & 29 for dd2, I was the first of my sort of 'friendship' group (many of them weren't interested in staying friends after I had ds & couldn't go out randomly & drink all of the time!) to have have children, but I seemed about average when having both dds.

I wanted to be done by the time I was 30, I'm now 32, but still don't always feel done, we are though!

Oysterbabe · 02/06/2019 18:40

35 first and 37 second. Completely average round here.

sheshootssheimplores · 02/06/2019 18:41

First at 37. Last at 40.

Purplegecko · 02/06/2019 18:41
  1. 'accidental' pregnancy ie. Not planned. No more kids years down the line and am extremely careful to not get pregnant, would ideally have waited til my 30s
Lotts123 · 02/06/2019 18:41

34 & have been told I have to wait 2 years if I want another (C Section). 2 years isn’t long but the fact I’ll be 36 going on 37 then does worry me. I wouldn’t want to do anything just because I’m in a flap about my age though. I’ve got friends who had theirs at 28/29 and other friends who have yet to start. My brother said “are you worried you’re an old Mum?” when I told him I was pregnant, cheek! At Baby groups I think most are late 20’s / early to mid 30’s.

Oysterbabe · 02/06/2019 18:44

In my friendship groups there isn't a single person who had one before 30.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 02/06/2019 18:44

15 with my first by 24 I'd had 3 and was sterilised.
