My MIL is firmly of the belief that I'm an 'old' mum (her words, not mine!) As I was 34 when I first became a mother.

I thought I was probably about average, or at least I seem to be for my group of friends.

MIL was 24 so yes I can understand that I'm a full 10 years older, but not quite as decrepit as she has made out. This charming remark was followed by the suggestion that my eggs will soon be dried up so if I want more I need to do it this year (I'm 35). Am I being naïve or is she old fashioned in her views?

41 and not the oldest. Average age of my mummy friends is 35-6

Pearlfish · 02/06/2019 19:22

I was 31, 33 and 35 for mine. I'd say I was pretty average among my friends.

Dickybow321 · 02/06/2019 19:23

24

londonrach · 02/06/2019 19:23

I have never been treated as older mum by anyone and everyone says i look and act 10 years younger. Dont care re age. Its a number. Dd was natural. Wewanted her an awful lot. Shes loved and so amazing (like every other child). Who cares if mum is 18 or 44

daisypond · 02/06/2019 19:24

31, 33 and 35 for my three.

Treaclepie19 · 02/06/2019 19:24

Miscarried at 24, DS at 25, DS2 (TFMR) at 28.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 02/06/2019 19:28

27, and I was the youngest in my antenatal group (most were early 30s).

As for the ‘dried up egg’ comment, I got pregnant first month both times, with PCOS, and being overweight.

This has made me feel so much better! Planning to ttc in the not too distant future and I'm overweight and have pcos so was worried.

Starlive23 · 02/06/2019 19:30

@lomdon I completely agree. I'm just over the moon to have been given the chance to have DD, just curious more than anything. Obviously up sides to being older and younger, depends on circumstance of course.

42 for DD
45 for my twins

Thertruthisoutwhere · 02/06/2019 19:31

1st pregnancy - 30
1st live birth - 31
The other mums in my NCT were 34,34,35,38,41 i thought there might be one or 2 younger but we live in a "naice" part of london so everyone has done travelling/career stuff in their 20s

Onto my 2nd at 32 and all my 2nd time mum friends are 40 ish

Perfect age for me and DH but it does mean smaller gaps as i want to be completely "done" by 37 and have planned 2-4 kids

Most of my friends from the midlands were 30/31 too

Saltandpepperpringles · 02/06/2019 19:32

19 with dc1 22 with dc2. It just depends what order you choose to do things...

We had already brought our house at 18 so we felt we were 'ready'... Now I realise how young we really were! (I'm 25 now!).

Liverbird77 · 02/06/2019 19:32

I was 41 and about to start TTC number 2. My baby is five months old and I am not exhausted. I have never been happier.

tomtom1999xx · 02/06/2019 19:32

41 isn’t old to have a baby.
But after about 43 it becomes almost impossible to conceive with your own eggs. Or so I’ve heard.

redbedheadd · 02/06/2019 19:32

I'm 29 and always the youngest at the baby groups... but must be the areas as where I'm from mums usually started early 20s. It totally depends where you live.

Neverender · 02/06/2019 19:33

36 and I'm now 38 and planning another one

Neverender · 02/06/2019 19:34

My DD is 2.5yrs and amazing

booboo82 · 02/06/2019 19:35

although drs don't use the term geriatric anymore , 35 and over is considered an old mum lol just be lucky your not being called a geriatric anymore lol

ladyshapes82 · 02/06/2019 19:36

33 for first, and having second this summer at almost 37. Very average amongst women I know.

TorchesTorches · 02/06/2019 19:37

First at 39, 2nd (and last) at 40. Most of my friend s had their first at about 35 ish.

saywhatwhatnow · 02/06/2019 19:37

29 with my first who took a long time and fertility treatment to conceive.

12 months later and I'm 8 weeks pregnant with my second naturally conceived 'surprise'.

BattenburgIsland · 02/06/2019 19:39

27 when I had my first.
I'm 32 now and my second is a year old.
I dont know if I'll have a 3rd but I think in my head 35 is my deadline for deciding that. More because my husband is a loy older than me and I think if I were over 35 and he was in his mid fifties we just wouldn't have the energy to care for a child properly any more.

I thought I was about average but recently at a baby group one of the organisers commented that I was young to have two! Which shocked me.
Even though I'm 32 now I do seem to be amongst the younger of the women at baby groups still.

AnneElliott · 02/06/2019 19:40

I think 30s are the norm now? I was 27 when I had DS and I was the youngest mum at the school Gates by some way.

Cannyhandleit · 02/06/2019 19:43

I was 32 when I had my first, currently 36 and pregnant with number 3 😳 thought I better fire them out quick before my ovaries shrivelled up 😂

Jinxed2 · 02/06/2019 19:45
  1. My mum was 29 when she had me and they classed her as an old mum! I had to be born in the hospital and not the maternity home
