Using a unisex toilet for the first time.

We took DD to sea life and when we went to the toilet to my surprise there was 1 and it was unisex!! Poor DH walked round the corner looking for the mens 😂

Thought I would share dh & I experience! Very strange doing a wee next door to DH, and the other lady in there looked VERY uncomfortable! DH got in & out as quick as possible and hated being in there with another woman said he would rather pee himself than go in there alone without me...

Obviously I cant comment very much as there was no other men in there but the thought of being along with a man in the toilets REALLY freaked me out for some reason, not to mention the cubicle I walked into had the seat UP, toilet paper on the floor as well as what I can only assume was P*SS 🤢 had to tell DD NOT to touch the walls as it smelled of urine also...

Anybody else had any experiences yet in a unisex loo? Safe to say I complained on my way out, I can deal with unisex toilets if I HAVE to when DH is around what I cant deal with is standing in a mans urine and having to wipe it of the seat ! Barf.....

Wtf , as in , not just a disabled toilet/ changing facility- an ACTUAL unisex toilet block? Like a row of toilets? That men & women both use? Sorry but that is horrendous. Wrong on so many levels. I would not be comfortable at all using facilities like that. Imagine being a young girl and using the toilet with a middle aged male stranger next door? No thanks. Think it's a terrible idea.

bubbaba · 30/05/2019 22:23

Oh not experienced one yet but not wanting to...
id feel the same as you on the urine front and if I was alone with another man. I don't like any situation where I'm alone with a man I don't know/trust tbh so this is way up there on my uncomfortable scale. Also to take a child in with me would be worse!
Aren't toilets exempt from cctv? so really it's quite a vulnerable place to be isn't it?!

RhiWrites · 30/05/2019 22:25

Every unisex toilet I’ve seen is individual separated rooms, each with their own closing door, loo and sink. Some have a shower as well.

I think they’re brilliant. This is what they’re like in universities and hospitals (in the new bits anyway).

I’ve never seen or heard of what the OP seems to be describing.

unisexloo · 30/05/2019 22:26

@BearRabbitPants nope it was a normal toilet with 5 cubicle 2 sinks with a unisex label 🚺🚹 on the door ! I think that is the biggest problem now isn't it? You cant just send your DC to the toilet on there own anymore if this happens everywhere 😔

Was quite shocked to see it in such a big company like the Sea life centre!

unisexloo · 30/05/2019 22:28

@RhiWrites I personally would just call that a toilet room? Its not 'The toilets' with multiple cubicles so even though its there for everyone to use its not 'unisex' as 2 different sex's cant use it at the same time IYSWIM?

I got to festivals and events every year many times a year. Most have unisex portaloos - I have no issue using one, not being in one next to another woman or man.

I don’t quite get the issue - we all poo and wee and need somewhere to do it, is the problem the vagina and penis? Or the fact that some men (and indeed women) have aim issues? I’ve seen disgusting single sex toilets and beautifully clean portaloos at festivals.

Probably the long drops at Glastonbury are a step beyond an internal unisex toilet - open to the elements, no lock and all peeing and poking into the same pit... gross, but if you’ve got to go, you’ve got to go! I’ve never even thought about the person standing or sitting next to me. Should I? (And please explain why!)

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 30/05/2019 22:32

I’m not sure why everyone is stressed out about unisex toilets on here at the minute. If you have a DH/DP living at home what do you do then? Is there a designated toilet for each sex in your house? Everyone needs to pee and poo it’s totally natural.

GCAcademic · 30/05/2019 22:34

I used one in an art gallery. It was very quiet, just me and one man in there. I felt very uncomfortable. It would be so easy for a predator to push you into a cubicle (and no one would hear anything as the walls and doors are floor to ceiling). I won't be using those facilities again.

SarahTancredi · 30/05/2019 22:36

Your home toilets arent fir use by complete strangers/,the public

Women dont just pee in toilets!

Sounds awful.

TurboTeddy · 30/05/2019 22:40

GCAcademic Exactly this. There are some single sex toilets that are a bit isolated so I avoid using them for this reason, there is no way I would use them if they became unisex.

unisexloo · 30/05/2019 22:42

@GCAcademic thats the worst part, the cubicle wasn't even floor to ceiling !

@Mouikey I think the problem I have with it is that men & women who have been abused in the past may feel very vulnerable in these situations, especially when the only single use toilet in the facility is locked and you need to 'look' disabled to use it 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Whatelsecouldibecalled @SarahTancredi
I pee in front of DH 😁 but DH also does not pee on the floor and cleans up after himself if he pee's on the toilet seat !

I just think if its going to become a thing now the toilets need to be clean A LOT more regularly !! Women don't want to sit or stand in mens wee and men certainly DO NOT want to see period blood in the toilet because some people are to lazy to flush 🤢

MorganKitten · 30/05/2019 22:42

I’ve been using unisex toilets for like 5 years, a local venue has them and never an issue.

LightsInOtherPeoplesHouses · 30/05/2019 22:43

I’m not sure why everyone is stressed out about unisex toilets on here at the minute. If you have a DH/DP living at home what do you do then?

As I've had several unpleasant experiences with men (and that is an understatement), I'm wary of being on my own with them, particularly if they're unknown to me.

DH I trust, he's never done anything to harm me. I sleep in the same bed as him, so sharing a bathroom with him is hardly the most intimate thing we do and is also not the same thing as using a public unisex toilet.

SarahTancredi · 30/05/2019 22:46

Women don't want to sit or stand in mens wee and men certainly DO NOT want to see period blood in the toilet because some people are to lazy to flush 🤢

They dont want to miscarry with men outside either Sad

rollingdiscs · 30/05/2019 22:46

I think this is only really a problem with people who are not used to them, naturally so. I think it'll come the norm.

unisexloo · 30/05/2019 22:47

@LightsInOtherPeoplesHouses a man came running up behind me today safe to say I shit myself, some people will never understand that feeling which is fine and understandable but women and men should be able to feel safe and relaxed in a public toilet!

Id feel a lot better using them if the entry door was removed and the cubicles were floor to ceiling with proper locks and regularly cleaned/checked, then it would not bother me at all.

I also think about other things though like when you just had a baby or someone with a heavy flow getting blood on their hands, it would be so embarrassing washing them next to a man, for me anyway 😬

OP posts:
PositiveVibez · 30/05/2019 22:48

Love all the anecdotes along the lines of 'well I've used a unisex toilet and nothing happened to me, so shut up and stop moaning'

Please do not invalidate other women feeling uncomfortable, just because you think she is being a daft, silly woman.

Women ARE allowed to feel uncomfortable. Especially in the scenario OP mentions.

TurboTeddy · 30/05/2019 22:50

unisexloo I think the cubicle walls are supposed to be floor to ceiling. So easy for predators to film or photograph otherwise.

I think it's important to remember that these concerns would not see the light of day if 98% of sexual violence wasn't perpetrated by men. For that reason I don't want any male that is unknown to me in close proximity when I am in any state of undress.

Lllot5 · 30/05/2019 22:51

I used one in a restaurant recently. It was fine probably half a dozen cubicles floor to ceiling walls and doors. Just came out washed and dried hands and left.
A man did come in while I was washing my hands said’ oh sorry’ turned round and walked out. But it was fine.

SarahAndQuack · 30/05/2019 22:56
Confused

How can you never have used unisex toilets before? Did you not even have them at primary school? You've never been to a small cafe or pub that has them?

My pet hate is the ones (which I have seen most often in the US) where the doors not only have massive gaps at the bottoms and tops of the cubicles but also, because of the angles, you can sort of glimpse through the gap between the door and the frame. Eugh.

However I think - in the nicest possible way - that if you are this keen to share 'DH & I experience,' then perhaps you need to get out more. It's a loo, not the ascent of Everest.

SarahAndQuack · 30/05/2019 23:02

Oh, and all of this stuff about men don't want to see period blood and women don't want to see wee ... erm, no, but nor does anyone.

Let's not pretend women have a natural affinity with period blood.

If all toilets were lockable, individual cubicles with hand basins, we'd not be having these ridiculous 'look at me, ooh, I'll pretend this perfectly normal scenario is a huge issue' responses.

TurboTeddy · 30/05/2019 23:06

Anyone who thinks that women who are uncomfortable with this are being precious perhaps needs to do some research on sexual assaults in mixed changing facilities, all single cubicles with lockable doors. Maybe google "period fetish" while you're at it. Reddit makes for stomach churning reading so probably best done when you're not eating.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/05/2019 23:08

I have never ever been in a unisex toilet that consists of multiple cubicles and a wash area

Its not normal at all

I understand that many toilets are changing from women only to mixed sex for some weird reason

But its certainly not ‘normal’

SarahAndQuack · 30/05/2019 23:10

turbo, I don't think women are being precious to be uncomfortable with unisex toilets.

I do, however, think the OP is being precious and attention-seeking. I really don't believe any adult thinks unisex loos are a new thing.

To be clear, what I am advocating is toilets that are each a single, lockable units with a sink. Not a row of cubicles that someone can peer over the top of, or where you have to go out to get to the sink, but individual units.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 30/05/2019 23:10

You must have had a very sheltered life if you have never used a unisex toilet in your life.

FYI they are exactly the same as every other toilet in the world its just different sexes use them at different times. They aren't some sort of portal to hell.
