12 and a half stone?

I'm trying to lose weight at present, my goal is about 11st. I'm currently 12.5. I know I am overweight, however I'm a size 12-14 so I don't think I'm massive. I also exercise 4-5 times a week (2 10k runs plus cycling/ rowing/ uphill walking/ weights etc).

Recently I was out with a friend and mentioned what I weigh.

OMG says friend , I wouldn't have said you weighed THAT much!

AIBU to feel a bit hurt? Is 12.5 stone really a lot?

No idea what friend weighs btw, but she is a size 18 and 6-7 inches shorter than me.

Well to her it probably seems a lot because she’s so much shorter than you!

I’m 12.5 stone and I’m 5ft 7. I know I need to lose a bit of weight but I’m not huge either!

TreadingThePrimrosePath · 18/05/2019 14:30

Think positive, she doesn’t think you look as if you weigh that much. Smile

cad186 · 18/05/2019 14:34

I think shorter people can underestimate the difference a few extra inches in height can make to weight (saying it as a shorter person myself!)

CupOhTea · 18/05/2019 14:36

Yes, I agree, it's about height. I always wanted to weigh the same as friends at school who were about eight stone, but I'm 5'8", so that would be a bit too light for me.

I would also take it as a compliment that she thinks you are lighter than you are Grin!

Outofinspiration · 18/05/2019 14:39

I would take it as a compliment. I'm 10 and a half stone and people never believe I weight that much! I don't really know why, I'm not skinny and I'm really quite short, but it does seem to be a recurring theme amongst different people?

Crunchymum · 18/05/2019 14:39

I agree. It means she didn't think you weigh as much as you do!!!

Picklypickles · 18/05/2019 14:42

I'm 5ft high and currently weigh 12.5 stone (down from 17!!) which does put me in the obese category. I'm a size 14/16. I wouldn't think it was a massive weight for someone much taller than me though.

pigsinarow · 18/05/2019 14:44

It’s obviously a compliment in that she thinks you look a lot slimmer.

SmarmyMrMime · 18/05/2019 14:46

Height is a major factor. 12.5st is great on 6ft DH. That's me being very heavily pregnant and barely able to walk under my own weight as I'm a small person.

Even at the same height, people carry weight differently. Pears can carry weight more subtly than apples or busty women, partly because of the distribution of the weight, partly because there is likely to be a higher proportion of dense muscle in the body's largest muscle groups.

Regular exercise and a muscular build will mean your weight would be more dense and appear slimmer than a person of same height and weight with a higher proportion of body fat.

Goodenough06 · 18/05/2019 14:46

This is why goal weights and obsessive weight checking is a bit pointless. Some people look great at 12 stone others would look massive! As long as you are healthy and happy with how you look and feel, weight isn't really that important.

RandomMess · 18/05/2019 14:55

It is all about height!! A stone on me is more than a dress size as I'm very short I look like weeble if I hit 10 stone...

Pre kids I was just over 6stone I think I each in height makes near enough a stone extra in weight at the upper end of the healthy range so to speak.

Zebedee88 · 18/05/2019 14:57

Maybe because you dont look like you should weigh that much? I'm overweight, but people seem surprised when I say how much, maybe you wear it well?

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 18/05/2019 15:00

How tall are you?? You must be very tall to be 12-14 at 12.5 stone.

I'm 12-14 and I'm 10stone 5lb, I'm 5'5"

Strugglingtodomybest · 18/05/2019 15:04

I'd take it as a compliment.

Oysterbabe · 18/05/2019 15:04

It's a compliment.

Beccyben123 · 18/05/2019 15:07

I'm 5ft 4 on a good day size 14/16 currently weigh 11st 13 I was 12 st 13 at the end of April but have dramatically changed my diet and have managed to lose a stone but to be quite honest no one has noticed 😂 am now a 14 on top 16 on bottom but could do with a few extra inches height wise to help me out.
My friend the other day said she would love to be 12st something so presuming she is heavier though would never ask her

Amy22 · 18/05/2019 15:09

I can see what you mean by the way it was said but take it as a compliment. I think comparing heights/weights/sizes etc is hard... I'm 5'2", around the 12stone mark which I'm aware is very overweight according to the charts but I'm a size 12 top, 14 bottom, occasionally a size either side of those depending on shop, style etc etc. X

glitterfarts · 18/05/2019 15:10

People are different. I have lost 1.5 stone on SW and haven't had to buy new clothes yet, same dress size. I'm 5 foot 9. My much shorter friend lost 0.5 stone and was down a dress size.

AmIthatfat · 18/05/2019 15:11

I'm 5ft 6. I suppose it could be a compliment but it didn't sound like one.

I was on the other side of this in a conversation with one of my close friends the other day. She said she weighed 11st 7lbs. I said “No way! You can’t weigh that?” I was surprised because she looks so trim. She is about 3inches taller than me (and a stone lighter). She looks really good to me and I had always imagined she was about 9st. She took it as a compliment (thank goodness!)

FaffyFaffington · 18/05/2019 15:17

I’m 5’11, weigh 12.5 stone and am size 12-14. Also looking to get nearer to 11stone.

Just goes to show weight is completely different for different heights and builds of people.

Yabbers · 18/05/2019 15:18

I have the opposite problem. One woman, every time I see her says I’m looking so slim, have I lost weight. I’m a size 16-18 so not slim at all. I’m wondering how she pictures me if this is me looking slim!

ichifanny · 18/05/2019 15:19

I’m 5 ft 5 and just over 12 stone and a size 12 all my old 14’s are massive on me .

Ninkaninus · 18/05/2019 15:20

It is a compliment - you don’t look as if you weigh that much. You’re heavier than one might expect because you are fit and muscle makes up more of your mass.

It’s not a big deal. People who exercise a lot often weigh more that others of comparable height and shape.

diddl · 18/05/2019 15:20

It's all about perception, isn't it?

12,5 stone to me is very heavy.

My dad, admittedly only 5ft10 is about 11 stone, so to me anything over that sounds a lot-unless taller than my dad!
