12 and a half stone?

AmIthatfat · 18/05/2019 14:26

I'm trying to lose weight at present, my goal is about 11st. I'm currently 12.5. I know I am overweight, however I'm a size 12-14 so I don't think I'm massive. I also exercise 4-5 times a week (2 10k runs plus cycling/ rowing/ uphill walking/ weights etc).

Recently I was out with a friend and mentioned what I weigh.

OMG says friend , I wouldn't have said you weighed THAT much!

AIBU to feel a bit hurt? Is 12.5 stone really a lot?

No idea what friend weighs btw, but she is a size 18 and 6-7 inches shorter than me.

This is why weight is so weird.

I'm only 5ft 4 and almost 12.5 stone and I still fit my size 12 jeans although they are snug. I could do with losing a couple of stone but I'm definitely not huge

Teateaandmoretea · 18/05/2019 15:22

People always underestimate the weight of tall women. I'm just under hooray 11st and people usually don't think about it tbh, I'm 10-12 in terms of clothes.

Surely you must have come across this before?

EustaciaPieface · 18/05/2019 15:22

I’m 5,5 and 11 stone, currently a 14 although can fit 12s in some shops. Everyone’s different!

NewLifeWanted · 18/05/2019 15:22

12.5 sounds a lot to me. I'm 11 stone & suffering for it - all sorts of medical problems cropping up due to my weight.

Teateaandmoretea · 18/05/2019 15:22

12,5 stone to me is very heavy.

Confused

Otoh for a lot of women 11st is their correct, healthy weight...... I have a bmi of 23.

Mummadeeze · 18/05/2019 15:25

Weight is a sensitive subject so maybe she should have acted a bit less shocked! I weigh 12 stone and am a size 14. I am 5’7”. I would also like to weigh 11 stone. And I exercise 4/5 times a week. I get plenty of compliments about my appearance, clothes etc from people and don’t feel too overweight. But I have started trying to become good at a sport recently and my coach has really advised me to lose weight to improve which is making me feel more conscious. He is right though and am going to try. I wouldn’t say you are very heavy but I definitely know people of your height and weight who weigh a lot less. It varies so much from person to person.

LuluBellaBlue · 18/05/2019 15:28

I’m exactly the same height / weight / size ratio as you OP and people are always shocked by my weight. I know I need to lose 2 stone at least but also fairly happy with myself as I am. This was a holiday pic in Dec and wasn’t horrified Blush

RedPandaMama · 18/05/2019 15:35

I was 12.5 stone around 4 years ago, at 5'8 I was a size 14 but looked really healthy and toned as I worked out a lot. I'll try and find a picture to add.

A few years on, mid-twenties and one baby later, I'm 14.5st and a size 16-18 - currently losing weight though and down from 16.5st and a size 20 at my biggest, post-baby.

Turpy · 18/05/2019 15:35

You know your friend so you are best placed to know if she was trying to compliment you or not. I expect she was just genuinely surprised rather than trying to offend you. People assume 12.5 st on a 5’6” woman would look quite chubby but it depends how you wear your weight and how you dress.

This is what I don't get - why then, at 5ft 4 and 9st, am I wearing size 10? I have some 8s but they are snug. How can 3.5 stone be one dress size? Or are sizes so bizarre that we should just take no notice of labels?

RedPandaMama · 18/05/2019 15:39

I was 12.5st when these pictures were taken, would happily go back there!

It’s a big weight for someone who is 5 foot tall but 5 ft 7 it’s only slightly overweight. I’m also 5 ft 7 and look great at that weight.

Looobyloo · 18/05/2019 15:43

At 5'7 and 11 1/2 stone I get this a lot. I take it as a compliment that I look thinner than I am (feel) Grin

Turpy · 18/05/2019 15:44

Or are sizes so bizarre that we should just take no notice of labels?

It’s not just the random variances of the size of the clothes it that everyone’s weight is distributed differently and everyone wears there clothes differently.

I like to wear my tee shirts fitted and have size 16, size 14, size 12 AND size 10. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Actual weight and actual height is a pretty good indicator of whether someone needs to lose weight or not. It shouldn’t be about looks (look at how lovely LuluBellaBlue looks) it’s about having too much fat in your body. Too much fat is unhealthy.

m0therofdragons · 18/05/2019 15:47

I'm 5'5" and 12.5 stone is a lot to me. Everyone carries weight differently but at 11st 10lbs I was very uncomfortable. I'm now 10st and definitely don't feel slim.

Crazzzycat · 18/05/2019 15:48

I’m 12.5 stone and on the few occasions I’ve mentioned that to people, they’ve been shocked.

I’ve always taken it as a compliment to be honest. Clearly I look like I weigh less than I do.

TheWaiting · 18/05/2019 15:51

@AndOutComeTheBoobs, you see, I’m also 12stone 5lbs, size 12-14 and 5ft5. I’ve just taken a pic of my middle to show what I look like.

borntobequiet · 18/05/2019 15:52

I’m 65, 5ft 5 ish and currently over 12 stone, size 14. Ideally I’d be 10.5 stone and 12/14. But I’ve always looked less heavy than I am. People are genuinely surprised when I tell them my weight. I’m relatively fit (gym, walking) but carrying more weight around my middle than is healthy, though it doesn’t show.

LoubyLou1234 · 18/05/2019 15:53

Different shapes can mean different sizes, I'm probably well over 11 stone I've always sat around or above that ( I don't weigh myself these days) pear shape. 12 on bottom and 10 -12 on top. I'm 5ft 4. I'm very active and eat well. I have a little muscle definition too.

I know people who weigh a similar kind of weight and are bigger sizes it's just different bodies and also different sizes in stores!

Mamaslave18 · 18/05/2019 15:54

I’m 5ft 8 and 10 stone and a size 12. It puzzles and fascinates me how we can be such varying sizes at similar weights.

BigRedLondonBus · 18/05/2019 15:56

I’m 5ft 4 and when I was size 12 I weight 12 stone. I wish I could get back to that weight I’m a size 18 now but losing weight (I won’t say how much I weigh now Shock )

TheWaiting · 18/05/2019 15:57

@m0therofdragons, you see, 10stone would be my ideal weight. I have been 10stone 2lbs and looked fairly skinny on the bottom and size 10 clothes were loose on me.

Oly4 · 18/05/2019 16:09

I’m 5ft 5 and 12.5 stone makes me huge. I’m 11 at the moment and a size 12. My ideal weight is about 10st 4. Trying to get there!

Runwayqueen · 18/05/2019 16:10

I'm the weight but 5,7, wearing a 12 bottom and 14 top (occasionally 16), it really does depend on your shape and how you carry it. I'm looking to come down to 11.7, anything lower and I look ill. Weight is such a unique thing
