12 and a half stone?

AmIthatfat · 18/05/2019 14:26

I'm trying to lose weight at present, my goal is about 11st. I'm currently 12.5. I know I am overweight, however I'm a size 12-14 so I don't think I'm massive. I also exercise 4-5 times a week (2 10k runs plus cycling/ rowing/ uphill walking/ weights etc).

Recently I was out with a friend and mentioned what I weigh.

OMG says friend , I wouldn't have said you weighed THAT much!

AIBU to feel a bit hurt? Is 12.5 stone really a lot?

No idea what friend weighs btw, but she is a size 18 and 6-7 inches shorter than me.

OP posts:
HalfBloodPrincess · 18/05/2019 18:40

When not pregnant I hover between 12/12.5 stone and am a comfortable size 12. 5’8 and a 34/36B depending on shop. I’d feel waif like if I were any smaller!

Amanduh · 18/05/2019 18:48

I’m 5’9 and just over 12.5 stone. 12 stone 7 currently! My BMI says I’m overweight. I’m a size 8-10 and have a 26(.3!) waist. People can never believe how much I weigh! I don’t know 🤷🏼‍♀️

Weirdpenguin · 18/05/2019 18:52

I think shorter women are often surprised when they hear what a tall woman weighs as they don't realise how much difference height makes. Also a 32" waist would be quite big on a 5ft 2 woman but not on a 5ft 9 woman.

joystir59 · 18/05/2019 18:54

I'm size 14 and 11st 11lb. I look slim. I'm currently slowly losing weight as prefer to be 10st 7lb. I will be size 10-12 then. I'm 5'7" tall.

Aprillygirl · 18/05/2019 18:57

It's better than her saying you look like you weigh a lot more than that isn't it?

Aprillygirl · 18/05/2019 18:58

Posted to soon, sorry. You obviously carry the weight well. Take it as a compliment.

MummaMooMoo · 18/05/2019 19:01

JinglingHellsBells - that was rude IMO. OP is aiming for a healthy BMI and doing considerable exercise & you're here just to tell her that's not good enough. Unless you can actually support the claim that the medical advice is 20-21 & under, consider that medical advice and common sense is clear that BMI is not an entirely accurate or universally applicable measure of weight ideals, and that it is much healthier to be lean, strong and have good bone density with a BMI of 23, than to simply "have" a BMI of under 21.

OP, you're doing great & while I can't say whether your friend was trying to be rude or not, you wouldn't BU to say something about that not really sounding supportive! I mightve gone with "that's not exactly the kind of encouraging tone I need!", offhand. That said, weight is just one of those things. Many obsess about their own without getting any input from other women about theirs.. so we get used to how X stone looks on us, rather than how it can look on others. If I look fat at this weight, this weight "is" fat in my mind.

You're doing great & the fact that your friend had no idea what 12 stone looks like on you, doesn't mean a thing Smile

Beccyben123 · 18/05/2019 19:05

Low carbs no potatoes, bread, pasta or rice loads of protein and veg just drinking water and no sugary food either really boring

Happyfionaj · 18/05/2019 19:18

I'm 12.13. and 5'8" tall and a size 12. I am a healthy strong women and believe in the "strong not skinny" term. I go to the gym 4 times a week and do alot of strength work I am 49 and started the menopause so changed my routine from cardio to a mix with more weight training than cardio.
I have a healthy diet. Weight is just a number your health is the most important thing. BMI was designed a long time ago and does not make allowances for dense muscle (I sit at around 27 on BMI) I'm sure your friend was not being rude so take it as a compliment. No one ever believes what I weigh Smile.

Torialavendar · 18/05/2019 19:19

I'm 29 and 12.5 size 12. My friends say the same as most of them weigh under 10st so to them it's a huge amount of weight. I think some people don't realise the tone they speak in or how sensitive other people can be about their weight. I think you sound like you look great and she has assumed you were lighter. I get it too though so understand how annoying it is.

JustDanceAddict · 18/05/2019 19:24

Wtf - I’m 5ft4 too and I only comfortably fit in size 12s when I’m 8.5 stones or less (on the bottom). I am smaller built on top and people v confused when I say I’m a size 12!!
I only got up to 11 stone when pregnant!!

Foxmuffin · 18/05/2019 19:28

I agree with pp. it’s because she’s short, nothing to be offended about.

Sproink · 18/05/2019 19:37

I'm 5'6" too. 8 stone 7 and a size 6.

Octopus37 · 18/05/2019 19:43

JustDance, I am similar to you and often have to buy size 12 bottoms at the moment at 5ft5 and 9st2 or 3. To be a 10 properly, I need to be around 8 and a half stone. I wasn't even quite a size 8 when I was 7st11 and borderline underweight. Like you on the top I am smaller, 10 or even an 8 sometimes, 30DD bust.

TheWaiting · 18/05/2019 19:52

@JustDanceAddict and @Octopus37, maybe it’s my boobs then. More than comfortable in a size 10 at 10stone 3 but I was 36DD bust I’m 5ft5

whitehalleve · 18/05/2019 20:06

It's exactly what @cad186 says.

featherflight · 18/05/2019 20:26

Honestly, I would be surprised if she weighs less than you, at a size 18. Maybe she isn’t actually shocked because it’s really not that much, but sort of mock shocked to hide how much she weighs. If that makes sense?
I’m a 12 and I weigh 10 stone 10lbs. Still got loads of baby weight to lose to get back to 9 stone Sad. But honestly I would guess she weighs more than you at a size 18. Also, muscle weighs more than fat. One of my friends is so much trimmer than me, but she always weighs more as she does a lot of exercise.

featherflight · 18/05/2019 20:34

Lulubella where is that sea? Looks divine!

Clankboing · 18/05/2019 20:34

I do think that some people are heavier than they look. At work I sometimes pick up children and and sometimes they are surprisingly heavy, an absolute dead weight, but they don't look it (obviously I don't make a comment about their weight!). I wonder if it is bone density? If so, I think I would prefer to have good bone density!

countdowntonap · 18/05/2019 20:46

Sproink Amazing physique! You look perfect!!!

LuluBellaBlue · 18/05/2019 20:52

@featherflight Bahamas 😍😍😍

ArgyMargy · 18/05/2019 20:53

I think it's a lot as I'm 8.5 stone. How long does it take you to run 10k?

awalkintheparka · 18/05/2019 21:01

I'm 9stone (57kgs) 5ft3. Size 8. I would definitely feel it if I weighed more. My friend is 53kgs and 5ft2- it really doesn't suit her if she weighs more but we look no different at these weights. Everyone is different and I don't think it was meant to be a bad thing. This is why I rarely weigh myself anymore and go off what I see in the mirror.

bluebluezoo · 18/05/2019 21:05

I think it's a lot as I'm 8.5 stone. How long does it take you to run 10k?

You do realise people are all different? I will never run 10k because i am not built for running- i am too flexible and have fast twitch, powerful muscles.

You may be able to run 10k in whatever time but I bet you would struggle with the conditioning sets I do.

I also weigh more than you. Again because I am built fairly powerfully- i have a large skeleton developed over years of putting large loads on it.

I had a friend my height who weighed 3st more than me. I would never ever had said she was much more than half a stone bigger.

I am 5’4 and 8.5st is eating disorder territory for me. I know because I went there in my late teens.

Thetruthwillout80 · 18/05/2019 21:14

5ft 4. I'm now just under 9 stone and I'm a size 10.
