12 and a half stone?

AmIthatfat · 18/05/2019 14:26

I'm trying to lose weight at present, my goal is about 11st. I'm currently 12.5. I know I am overweight, however I'm a size 12-14 so I don't think I'm massive. I also exercise 4-5 times a week (2 10k runs plus cycling/ rowing/ uphill walking/ weights etc).

Recently I was out with a friend and mentioned what I weigh.

OMG says friend , I wouldn't have said you weighed THAT much!

AIBU to feel a bit hurt? Is 12.5 stone really a lot?

No idea what friend weighs btw, but she is a size 18 and 6-7 inches shorter than me.

I'm very top heavy too for my height! Hoping to get from 11 13 to 11 and lose some bust

JinglingHellsBells · 18/05/2019 16:32

@AmIThatFat

If you are doing this for health, there is a simple test.

The healthiest waist size for women is classed as 32 inches max. Every inch above this increases risks of cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

Also measure your BMI.

The advice is we all should be at the lower end of healthy- so that's ideally closer to 18.5 rather than 25 (above 25 = overweight.)

A lot depends on your stature too. I am tiny and weigh under 8st but have a normal, healthy BMI.

ReindeerTails · 18/05/2019 16:38

It's not that big at all (I have been there and more) but it depends on your height.

I am 5'8", have been 8.5st and up to 14.5 st. I dieted to get back to 12.5st and I felt I was reasonably trim (ash) at that, however, now I'm back to 9.5st I can see that I was chunky. At the time I felt I looked fairly slim (compared to 14.5st I was, but not compared to 10st me.

ReindeerTails · 18/05/2019 16:39

trim-ish!

AmIthatfat · 18/05/2019 16:45

I'm aiming for 11st because that is the top end of healthy BMI. The lightest I've been as an adult is 10st (that was in my teens/ early 20s) I'd be happy with 11st now I'm a lot older! I don't think it's realistic for me to be much less than that.

My waist is about 32 at the moment but hopefully will be a bit less when I lose a few more pounds.

This thread is really interesting. I’m 5ft 6, and can fluctuate between ten and ten and a half stone. Size 10/12. I was down at nine stone ten because of illness, and felt I looked thin, my “fighting weight” is around the ten-two mark. I weigh myself once a week, but do think the scales can dictate my mood which is probably not healthy - this morning I was ten-four and felt angry at myself!

MyToDoListHatesMe · 18/05/2019 16:51

@Beccyben123 how did you lose the weight? :)

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 18/05/2019 16:56

I'm the same weight and height as you OP.
12-14 clothes size. People always look shocked when I say how much I weigh.
Take it as a compliment!

CupOhTea · 18/05/2019 17:01

I'm another unfortunate one who is still a size 10-12 even when I am borderline underweight (I'm heavier than that now though and more of a 12-14). So I remember being 9 stone 3 and still taking a 12 in some jeans and work trousers. I'm 5'8", so at that weight I was borderline underweight.

I have no idea why that is. I think it's just having a big frame and being an apple shape. There seems to be no rhyme or reason!

Notnownotneverever · 18/05/2019 17:12

I would say that was a compliment. She thinks you look slim and means you look like you weigh a lot less or you are more similar in weight to her than she thought as you are a lot slimmer than her due to her height.
Anyway either way it’s a compliment and I wouldn’t over think it.

ElspethFlashman · 18/05/2019 17:19

I'm 5'7 and 12.5 stone. I look OK. I look similar to that bikini pic. I'm a size 14. Have actually been a size 14 since about 16.

However I want to be 11.5 stone. I would look flipping fab at that weight. All trim and could wear anything.

Trouble is my body tends to settle at this weight, its definitely my default.

JaceLancs · 18/05/2019 17:26

I’m an hourglass who carries a reasonable amount of weight on my arms and legs
Although I’m only 5’4” when I last weighed 12.5 stone I was around a size 14 with a 32 inch waist
I’m currently 11 stone and a size 10-12 with a 29 inch waist
I’m aiming for 10 stone which will make me an 8-10
I was thinner when younger but not sure in my 50s it would look good
In my early 20s I got down to nearly 7.5 stone due to an illness not eating disorder - in pictures I look awful

Fundays12 · 18/05/2019 17:33

I would take it as a compliment and height plays a huge difference in how people look. I am currently 11st 7 at 30 weeks pregnant and feel huge as I am 5ft 5 but small framed. I normally weight 9st 7 and suit that weight.

adamantinious · 18/05/2019 17:34

am 5ft8, 10st5lbs, bodyfat percentage of 24%, BMI is 23. I wear an UK 8-14, depending on where I shop. My weight fluctuates between 9st10lbs, and 11st4lbs, and I'm still considered a healthy BMI at both ends of that spectrum.

the difference in fluctuation is the result of body fat percentage. At 9st10lbs, my body fat percentage is 18%, and at 11st4lbs, I'm 31% body fat.

we get 'fooled' though, about what 'fit' looks like.

a competitive female bodybuilder has between 9-15% bodyfat. A Victoria's Secrets' model has around 10-12%. A top-notch Olympic athlete has around 10-15%.

And that isn't healthy, long term.

'healthy' body fat percentage for adult women ranges between 18-31%, depending on age.

12st5lbs, at 5ft6ins, and a UK 12-14, doesn't sound to shabby to me, and it sounds like you're not finished yet with your healthy ways, so don't be discouraged.

flowery · 18/05/2019 17:35

I’m just over 5’6” and at your weight I’d definitely be a bigger dress size than you.

I’m a size 10 bottom half size 8 or 10 top half at 10 st. I’d be a definite 12 bottom half at 11st and 14 at 11.5 stone or more, although it’s a long time since I’ve been that big.

YesQueen · 18/05/2019 17:40

Yes I'm fat before anyone tells me Grin
I was 15 stone in this photo, size 16

You ought not to move the goalposts just because of age. Getting fatter is not inevitable. If you are at the top end for a healthy BMi then that is not ideal- the medical advice is lower end or at least around 20-21.

I'm actually shocked at how much some women say they weigh. It must be all bone! If I go over 8st I look obese. I'm 5 3".

user1486131602 · 18/05/2019 17:52

No YANBU, its your body and it can be whatever size YOU like.
At least your bum isn’t as big as your friends mouth! 🤣

flowery · 18/05/2019 17:54

”Getting fatter is not inevitable.”

Yes this. I’m about the same size now at 43 as I was at 22 when I got married.

Aroundtheworldandback · 18/05/2019 17:59

I’m 5.6 and have put on a stone- weigh 9 and was 8. Realise I am not overweight but sick of people telling me I look ok when I can’t fit into my jeans.

TheWaiting · 18/05/2019 18:07

*JinglingHellsBells, I think a lot depends on body shape. At 10-10.5 stone I am a fairly slim size 10 and my size 10 clothing sits loose but not baggy on me. I think I’d look unwell at 8st or below. I’m 5ft5. But I also have size 7.5 feet and a hand span bigger than most adult men inc my DH and my 5ft10, 15yr old DS. Wide hips too even when slim and toned which meant all my labours were quick and easy. But I was still 10stone 3 pre kids with a washboard tummy.

moonbells · 18/05/2019 18:26

There's a weight loss chat thread on how much you weight and what size/height. I'm going to copy my post brazenly to here because several people have commented on how they can't understand how different people can be the same height and weight and totally different sizes.

Well I've seen it in me over about 30 years...

Another 5'7 10st size 12.

Last year I lost almost 6st (had been 15st 4 and size 20-22).

When I was younger (I'm post-meno, post DC and 51) I used to be an old size 12 at this weight. That's two modern sizes smaller. Same person, same weight, same height. And I'm probably fitter than in my 20s. Go figure.

So whoever noted that frame makes a massive difference, so does age, whether you've had DC (body shape change) and post-weight loss body composition.

My body shape has massively changed thanks to DC. I'm now 34D and last time I was this weight, when I got married, I was 32A. Shock

moonbells · 18/05/2019 18:29

Gah. What you weigh Blush

planesinthesky · 18/05/2019 18:38

I’ve done this before, when I was in my early twenties and chatting to some girls who told me they were 30 (or 35 maybe). My reply was ‘oh, you don’t look that old’ Blush I don’t think 30 is old and I wasn’t being a bitch, I just assumed they were younger and it came out badly. I have a ton of moments like that.

To be honest 12 stone 7 is pretty heavy for an average height woman (and I say that as someone who’s pushing 12 stone myself). But then she’s only 5’0, so on her 12 stone 7 would be very much in the obese range. That might also be the reason for her initial reaction.

Turpy · 18/05/2019 18:39

YesQueen. You look lovely!

.......but all this chat about weight and looks is missing the point that being overweight, even if you look fantastic, is unhealthy for you.

Health is way more important than looks.
