to not want traditional fairy tales used in DD's class

P1 5yo DD's class are doing a range of activities around Fairyland being lost. I don't hear any chat from dd about anything challenging gender norms. For example, she tells me they are making a castle for sleeping beauty this week so the handsome Prince can come and wake her up. Obviously I've discussed the consent issue with her. This seemed to be new news...

AIBU in wanting a chat with her teacher to check on the truth and encouraging some challenge... or will I be "that parent"?

OP posts:

Oooh. I heard it was old king raping her.
Snowhite has an interesting oroginal ending too. They all do tbh. Much better than cuddly cutsey they are today😁

Treaclesweet · 01/05/2019 21:01

I'm with you OP, I probably wouldn't go in but I would definitely discuss it at home.

Where do all you 'feminist as they come's think we get the society we do? It starts with small things, socialisation in schools. Girls are princesses and boys rescue them.

Issues like this are, IMO, why we are not seeing the progress with equality that we would hope for.

Myworstnightmare123 · 01/05/2019 21:02

This thread had made in unintentionally laugh. OP..... chill the fuck out.

arethereanyleftatall · 01/05/2019 21:03

You stopped mid sleeping beauty story, to explain to a 5 yr old that he can't kiss her without consent?
That, op, is absolutely bat shit crazy.

tararabumdeay · 01/05/2019 21:03

My students are generally high needs teens. When asked to retell a fairy story from a different point of view many said they didn't know any. One lad could only draw on the plot of the five minute wordless animation film we'd recently studied.

Fairy stories are meant to be allegorical like myths or legends, fables or parables not taken literally or already interpreted on the recipient's behalf. To do that would be like dressing a girl entirely in pink and a boy in blue or forcing one's own choices on others because they don't, yet, have the skills of inference and experience.

Ffs 😂

RiverMeadow · 01/05/2019 21:04

You can't be serious Confused

2cats2many · 01/05/2019 21:05

Buy her a copy of The Paperbag Princess. That's a proper fairy tale for girls.

Circeplease · 01/05/2019 21:05

Good spot emma090! In a similar vein, OP if you did raise with school I expect you may be pleasantly surprised by the response. I suspect your concerns are being covered the more I think about it.
Actually quite surprised how many posters think you’re completely mad as I thought most people were aware of the issues around this and how it is possible to raise them without sucking the joy out of fairytales. Look at more recent retelling/movies for example!

arethereanyleftatall · 01/05/2019 21:05

If you're making sure your dd hears the truth at all times, make sure you tell her her drawing is absolutely shit, her writing abysmal, spelling so bad it's funny etc etc (or don't).

DeftandGlory · 01/05/2019 21:06

Context, They are er...pretty old.

PanBasher · 01/05/2019 21:06

It's a fairy tale, not a steamy novel.
You sound ridiculous. Thousands, if not millions of girls have been brought up on The Brothers Grimm and similar and those girls have generally turned out to be well adjusted intelligent women.
You're seeing things that aren't there....yes really!
Do you also ban cartoons because they display a level of violence and therefore will turn the child into a psychopath?
Pathetic.

Myworstnightmare123 · 01/05/2019 21:07

The fucking fun police are in the building.
Imagine the untold damage these fairy tales have done over the years.

HJWT · 01/05/2019 21:07

@Blankiefan why not just say the princess gave the prince consent before she fell asleep? 😂 surely a-lot easier

Blondieg · 01/05/2019 21:07

Good grief, it is a work of fiction.
Are you wanting to ban all stories that don't fit into todays ideas and values?
Think your being a little sensitive

Siameasy · 01/05/2019 21:08

How to ruin being a parent by overthinking the whole thing

Jinglejanglefish · 01/05/2019 21:08

Thing is, if he hadn't done it she would've stayed asleep forever. I'd rather be kissed by a prince who hadn't asked for consent than be in a coma forever.

TapasForTwo · 01/05/2019 21:09

I didn't know that 53rdWay

Is there a reliable website that has the original fairy tales?

VoteJadot · 01/05/2019 21:09

Tell the teacher about the Creative Europe project on Gender identity and child readers. They have a brilliant bibliography of gender-positive kids' books.

BentBaastard · 01/05/2019 21:12

This is the funniest thing I have ever read on here.

Funny as in completely bonkers and not amusing.

Your poor child. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
Poor teacher 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Unbelievable.

Touchmybum · 01/05/2019 21:12

oh... dear.... god....!!!! Seriously?

MashPotatoMashPotato · 01/05/2019 21:12

Poor kid, you really are a fun sucker aren’t you? Didn’t you enjoy fairytales as a child? They were magical and great stories, in no way even as a child did I think they were real!!

SleepingStandingUp · 01/05/2019 21:13

It's a resus kiss, not a shag. At least in the modernised version any way.

If you saw someone unconscious would you hold off giving "the kiss of life" because you don't have consent from them?

user1498581287 · 01/05/2019 21:13

The prince in The sleeping beauty can't ask her consent-because she isn't concsious! He wakes he up from being asleep because of magic! I don't think it's a story about assult-it's a story about the transformative power of love, isn't it?
