to not want traditional fairy tales used in DD's class

P1 5yo DD's class are doing a range of activities around Fairyland being lost. I don't hear any chat from dd about anything challenging gender norms. For example, she tells me they are making a castle for sleeping beauty this week so the handsome Prince can come and wake her up. Obviously I've discussed the consent issue with her. This seemed to be new news...

AIBU in wanting a chat with her teacher to check on the truth and encouraging some challenge... or will I be "that parent"?

OP posts:

Btw fairytales were never "messages about submission" etc. They were warnings about concequences to behaviour and a way to deal with fears.

Myopinionsaremine · 01/05/2019 20:28

I've heard it all now [hmm get a grip honestly you are being ridiculous

MoreCookiesPlease · 01/05/2019 20:29

This is clearly a wind-up...

Circeplease · 01/05/2019 20:31

Just try to balance it at home as said above OP. My DD loved pink and princesses - especially Disney’s Sleeping Beauty as a little one. We’ve always talked and discussed about things like this as she got older. She’s now a young teen and couldn’t be a more confident and opinionated young feminist.

PositiveVibez · 01/05/2019 20:31

Maybe the letter to Santa includes formal consent to enter the premises

That did make me laugh. I do get where you are coming from OP, but fairytales are made up stories and you can explain this at home, how outdated they are etc., but dont go to the school about it.

She's 5 OP! She's probably been too busy enjoying the STORY.
Plenty of time for life suck all the joy of out of her in the years to come...

Starlight456 · 01/05/2019 20:32

You do know that they are not true ??

I am a cm and today read a story about having a crocodile 🐊 to stay . In reality terribly dangerous. Guess what not one of them went home expecting a crocodile to stay.

Creativity , imagination are important qualities.

The government dictates the curriculum enough as it is without parents interfering too. Let the teachers get the information across the way they think the children will enjoy school is already to work focussed

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 01/05/2019 20:32

Your view is not marginal, op, it’s just plain nuts.

TheHumanSatsuma · 01/05/2019 20:33

FFS

Lh88 · 01/05/2019 20:34

Ffs she's 5. Don't be that parent

JustCallMeSliths · 01/05/2019 20:34

Actually, you know what? Every single person should talking about consent with their children. They should be teaching them body autonomy from the start and the right to say no and be listened to from as early as possible. You should be giving them the words and means to have control over what does and doesn't happen to their bodies.

As for the fairytails at school... I wouldn't be particularly happy tbh but as others have said, I'd just conteract it at home.

littlebillie · 01/05/2019 20:35

Oh dear Op, generation Z is very precious and they definitely know it!

Langrish · 01/05/2019 20:35

If you’re that bothered, read the Roald Dahl versions when she’s at home.

ReceptionTA · 01/05/2019 20:35

In the school I work in, in Year One the children are read the traditional take Rapunzel. They the re write the story in their own words, but are encouraged to have Rapunzel as her own saviour, getting herself out of the fix she's in.

Have a word with the teacher by all means, to find out their take on things. But yes, unless you are tactful you will be THAT patent.

boringlyboring · 01/05/2019 20:35

Tbh, if I’d listened to Disney and only accepted a prince instead of all the shitty frogs, I reckon I’d have been alright.

Also, are people actually saying that something like Sleeping Beauty influences the understanding around consent? I honestly just wished I lived in a magical kingdom/woodland as a child (and sometimes as an adult...)

PinguDance · 01/05/2019 20:36

I agree that fairy tales can be viewed as the original cautionary tales - the issue in the version where sleeping beauty wakes up in childbirth is that obviously the prince/king has done something awful, in the kiss version the prince is the hero. Totally different message. The old version is more woke then the more recent one.

Also OP there are som great Babette Cole books that are a good antidote to the namby pamby sleeping beauty shite - princess smarty pants.

Sofagirl · 01/05/2019 20:36

Let them have their fairy tales

Our children grow up too soon as it is

SleepingSloth · 01/05/2019 20:36

😂😂😂

JustCallMeSliths · 01/05/2019 20:37

Pressed too soon...
I'd conteract the school stories with more positive ones and say things like "That silly prince. He shouldn't go round kissing people without them knowing. What a silly sausage" and gently laugh at the silliness of it all with her. I wouldn't go in too harsh because she will get confused especially if she's enjoying them at face value which at 5 she will be.

CheshireChat · 01/05/2019 20:39

I'm surprised they're sticking just to the traditional ones, there's loads of modern versions that are exactly for that age group and are pretty entertaining.

Cherylshaw · 01/05/2019 20:40

Jesus wept, she's 5 for Christ sake!
You are thinking about this too much, and you are definitely already that parent

bugsymaloney · 01/05/2019 20:41

Oh don't OP.

You'll never be taken seriously in the school again.

There is no chance that the school will abandon this project halfway through either- it's a well known infant writing scheme which has been done in P1/ P2 for donkeys' years.

Fairytales are good for beginner writers because they know them- they don't need to think as much about the content and can focus on the technical aspect of writing.

Chouetted · 01/05/2019 20:41

YADBU. If you want balance, read her some traditional English ones. They'll really spook you both (and they're supposed to).

Jemima232 · 01/05/2019 20:41

Erm……..

crimsonlake · 01/05/2019 20:41

God help us and god help the teachers, unbelievable.
