AIBU to not get why everyone seems to hate lanyards?

Sort of re the pockets thread - I keep my work pass round my neck on a lanyard I was given with the pass for the purpose. This means I always have it so can get through the building easily, never lose it, don't have to carry it in a bag (or pocket!) etc.

I am however in a minority. Everyone else at work including my dh seems to go to great lengths to hide them - putting them in wallets, keeping them in bags, leavim them on desks etc. On the odd occasion I've caught someone wearing one, they've turned the card round in the little bracket do you can't see the photo. I mean your face is right there at the top of your neck, what do you think you are hiding??

Why do folk hate on the lanyard??

I used to hate it because when I walked it bounced up and down on my chest, if I had to lean over a desk it dangled in my cup of tea, someone elses face etc. Generally they are just a pain in the bum.

RottnestFerry · 30/04/2019 15:19

I hate them. I keep my pass inside my wallet.

Wearing one makes me feel like a tagged cow.

Grin Your face is right there at the top of your neck, lol! I'm really just here to appreciate that comment.

Babdoc · 30/04/2019 15:19

They’re a strangulation hazard if grabbed by a violent patient. In my NHS trust, the management insisted your bloody first name was on it, but not your title (eg Dr). I never called patients by their first name without permission, it’s unprofessional, and I sure as hell didn’t want patients knowing or using mine!

anotherdamnname · 30/04/2019 15:19

I've noticed this! I wonder if people think it doesn't go with their outfit. Or they hate their photo. I give no shits though, I wear mine

DirtyDennis · 30/04/2019 15:20

I hate lanyards for several reasons:

  1. I look terrible in my staff photo. I'm quite attractive IRL (i.e. in the face at the top of my neck which everyone can see) but my work photo looks like a "faces of meth" mugshot.
  2. The lanyard covers up any lovely long necklaces that I might be wearing
  3. I find they can rub a bit on the back of my neck
  4. At my workplace they're very politicised. There's an implicit expectation that we wear rainbow pride ones. When it's "national [insert thing] day", many people wear badges/pins of this day on their lanyard. I don't go in for any of that shit and I hate the implication that because I don't wear a rainbow pride one that I'm somehow homophobic.

I have a work lanyard but very rarely use it. I hate it touching my neck. When I wear trousers I attach it to my belt loops instead.

It's very useful though, holds security, travel card and debit card.

Polarbearflavour · 30/04/2019 15:20

I always thought that people who work in offices wear them outside of work to show they work in an office job and that’s better than retail? Or something. I worked retail many years ago and some of the office staff who came in on their lunch breaks were pretty snooty.

I work in an office now but for security, we cannot wear our lanyards outside of work.

Seventytwoseventythree · 30/04/2019 15:21

I love mine too, I’m a doctor and I can hang my bleep, pen, pocket watch and pen torch on it to save me from having overflowing pockets. Do sometimes get a sore neck when carrying two or three bleeps though!

Betsy86 · 30/04/2019 15:21

horsey im here sharing that appreciation with you lol Grin

BollocksToBrexit · 30/04/2019 15:22

I wish my DH hated his. He wears it all the bloody time, even weekends, 'so that it doesn't get lost'. FFS!

PinkHeart5914 · 30/04/2019 15:23

I don’t mind them when I’ve needed to wear one and the staff at my business wear them at all times.

I am however only really commenting on this as I love this I mean your face is right there at the top of your neck, what do you think you are hiding?? Grin

Fooferella · 30/04/2019 15:24

I wear mine - rainbow and all - so that I can always get in the front door or use a printer. I'm constantly letting other people in with my pass because I've got it handy while they're rummaging through their bag and blocking the door.

Wallabyone · 30/04/2019 15:25

I'm a teacher, and it used to really annoy me, plus whack the children in the head as I use to lean over to help them/look at their work. So I used to carry it around and then lose it, frequently.

Namestheyareachangin · 30/04/2019 15:25

@babdoc The strangulation hazard makes sense - not generally a risk of considered in HE! ours have a safety clasp that pops open if it gets pulled (my toddler loves my lanyard too and doesn't care if she throttles me so this is useful).

@DirtyDennis "faces of meth" 😂 I have such a shiny forehead in mine it's like the sun. Damn florescent lighting and oily skin!

Shock even in bed?

Moneys2Tight2Mention · 30/04/2019 15:26

He wears it all the bloody time even weekends

What?? So you go out for a nice dinner on a Saturday night and he's got his bloody work lanyard round his neck? Grin

SlimGin · 30/04/2019 15:26

I don't wear one but I know people who do and they don't like everyone being able to see their full name. Obviously this depends where you work but my friend has had issues with people online stalking and trolling so put a sticker over her surname.

kaytee87 · 30/04/2019 15:27

I wear mine but I'm a bit unhappy about it showing my full name as I work with the public.

Loopytiles · 30/04/2019 15:28

They make necklaces and necklines look shit.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 30/04/2019 15:28

@bollockstobrexit I feel for you . That IS mighty odd of your DH I must say .

Namestheyareachangin · 30/04/2019 15:28

I've actually just realised men (in standard workwear) once again have the advantage here, as they can wear it round their shirt collar (protecting the neck) then tuck the actual card into their breast pocket (to avoid dangling). Seriously, I'm going to start dressing like a crusty male Classics professor from 1956, they clearly have the edge on sartorial practicality.

Grin This made me properly LOL... very Alan Partridge Grin

RavenLG · 30/04/2019 15:31

I don't mind wearing mine walking around but at my desk it sits right kind of under my boobs so when I'm leaning against the desk typing it digs in, bangs, clashes, gets in the way. It's pissing annoying. But our building is like fort knox so if I do leave it on the desk, I'm fucked!

Plus I look like the old man from Up in my picture so it is always turned around Grin no one ever checks the bloody things anyway

EntirelyAnonymised · 30/04/2019 15:31

Lanyards are banned in my acute nhs trust as an infection control measure. Same as neck ties. I have my ID/security pass on a retractable thing that clips onto clothing.
